Baptism is so highly  misunderstood, and no wonder. There is ritual baptism as identification and there is spirit baptism at salvation, and there are other baptisms for select groups in history. And reading these passages simplistically does create problems, so let's be good students and handle these passages with care in context.

We looked at the idea that water baptism is somehow related to or a part of spiritual regeneration in the last episode, a view with strong support. But is there more to the story, was Jesus correcting Nicodemus' arrogance, and the arrogance of all Jews who thought being born was a Jew was enough for eternal life?

Nicodemus came under cover of night to seek out Jesus and got more than he asked for; the requirement for being born from above. Saying water baptism is required for salvation is foolishness; but is there something to the regenerative work of water baptism?

The thing is, not every baptism is for the believer; some were for people in the past and some are still in the wings, waiting for a time in the future. And yet others are ritual only and don't affect a change at all. No wonder this topic is so controversial.

Real baptisms are dry, not wet. They don't involve water at all. What do they involve? That's a work of the Holy Spirit.

Before Christ you were a slave to sin, no need to surrender, obeying sin was natural and easy. After belief, it's very similar. If it was natural and easy to obey God there would be no need for the command to surrender to Him.
