In this podcast, Beyond Zero radio talk to Professor Will Steffen, of the Fenner School of Environment & Society at ANU, about the human impacts of climate change. Australia’s critical window of opportunity to tackle climate change is closing, with a new landmark report, Critical Decade 2017: Accelerating Climate Action, from the Prof Will Steffen and the Climate Council, revealing our nation is falling behind the rest of the world, failing to tackle climate change as pollution levels continue to rise.
"You will find “no sceptic at the end of a firehose!"
These words were said by Prof Will Steffen, climate change expert researcher and Councillor with the independent Climate Council, which was launched after the Federal government abolished the Climate Commission. It was pointed out there was obviously no need anymore for financial support if it could exist without!
Will is responsible for a number of reports from 2011, when it became clear there were changes in extreme weather reports until 2017 when it became very clear. 2009 in Copenhagen there was some degree of pessimism felt but now it seems the "window" for smooth transition to meet the Paris target is rapidly closing. Will speaks about the "6th Great Extinction". He derides the Coalition's approach as "completely and utterly stupid" and that the target should be more in the realm of 65-70% to have any hope at all of reaching the Paris agreement of 1.5 degrees. Australia needs to do its "fair share" and the Federal Government should not be relying on the states to do the "heavy lifting". There is a need then for a "well defined" pathway instead of playing "political football" and a plan for zero emissions by the 2040s. (BZE had already estimated it is possible in 10 years) Instead Australia had been awarded "Fossil of the Day" at Bonn! – commentary by Bev McIntyre” [Photo supplied by Will Steffen]
