Grandpa Bill today overviews The Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh is an epic poem from ancient Mesopotamia. It is the oldest known work of literature, dating back to the 3rd millennium BC. The epic tells the story of Gilgamesh, the king of Uruk, and his quest for immortality.

The epic is divided into 12 tablets, each of which tells a different part of Gilgamesh's story. The first tablet introduces Gilgamesh as a powerful but tyrannical king. The gods, responding to the people's pleas, create Enkidu, a wild man, to challenge Gilgamesh.

Gilgamesh and Enkidu become fast friends, and together they embark on many adventures. They defeat the monster Humbaba and the Bull of Heaven, and they travel to the Cedar Forest, where they cut down a sacred tree.

However, Enkidu dies soon after their return to Uruk. Gilgamesh, grief-stricken, sets out on a quest to find the secret of immortality. He travels to the ends of the earth and meets many strange and wonderful creatures, including the goddess Ishtar and the immortal sage Utnapishtim.

In the end, Gilgamesh does not find the secret of immortality, but he does learn to accept his own mortality. He returns to Uruk and rules wisely until his death.

The Epic of Gilgamesh is a complex and multi-layered work. It can be read as a story about friendship, adventure, and loss. It can also be read as a meditation on the nature of mortality and the meaning of life.

The epic has been translated into many languages and is still widely read today. It is a classic work of world literature and a valuable source of insight into the ancient Mesopotamian worldview.

I am an author who turned to writing after a career in the world of artificial intelligence and hi-tech software. I have spent many years researching the 1972 Andes flight disaster, first as a hobby, and then full time, leading to the publication of a comprehensive history of the event, "To Play the Game", which appeared in December 1972 - the fiftieth anniversary of the return of sixteen survivors after 72 days lost in the mountains.

About John Guiver

My lifetime interest in the 1972 Andes Flight Disaster led me to travel to the site of the accident in January 2013 in the company of one of the sixteen survivors, Eduardo Strauch. Through him, I met many others connected to the story, including survivors Pedro Algorta and Coche Inciarte, whose memoirs I translated. Over the years, I have conducted numerous interviews within the close-knit passenger community, and have delved deeply into various archives, including that of Piers Paul Read who wrote the best-selling 1974 account of the tragedy, Alive. The detailed information I have amassed persuaded me to write a comprehensive history of this iconic event. "To Play the Game" retells the story both on and off the mountain, giving an in-depth look at the world from which the passengers came, and an analysis of the possible causes of the accident. The account is enriched by the stories of those who didn’t return from the mountain, related through the eyes of their families, bringing much-needed balance to a history which has largely focused on the survivors.
