The sacred discourses of Śrīla Rādhā Govinda Dāsa Gosvāmī Mahārāja are an invaluable source of spiritual wisdom, drawing from the timeless teachings of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. On the second day of his lecture in Kanpur, Mahārāja continued his discourse on Saunakādi Ṛṣiyo ke Praśna (the questions of the sages headed by Śaunaka Ṛṣi). This topic, rooted in the profound discussions between Śrī Sūta Gosvāmī and the sages in Naimiṣāraṇya, reveals essential spiritual principles that guide seekers on the path of devotion (bhakti). The lecture delved into the nature of their questions, their intent, and the spiritual significance of their inquiries.
Mahārāja began the discourse by painting a vivid picture of the historical backdrop in which the sages gathered at Naimiṣāraṇya. He explained that these sages, under the leadership of Śaunaka Ṛṣi, assembled to perform a thousand-year yajña (sacrificial offering) for the spiritual upliftment of the people of Kali-yuga. Understanding the short lifespan, quarrelsome nature, and spiritual degradation of people in this age, the sages sought a means to attain the ultimate good for all living beings.
Their foremost concern was the welfare of humanity and the means to attain true happiness. This led them to pose profound questions to Sūta Gosvāmī, who was chosen as their spiritual guide due to his deep knowledge and realization of the scriptures.
The Nature of the Questions
Mahārāja highlighted that the sages did not ask superficial questions about material prosperity, political affairs, or mundane happiness. Instead, their questions revolved around the supreme goal of life and the ultimate dharma (religion) for all living beings. These inquiries reflect the genuine intent of an earnest seeker and are foundational to Sanātana-dharma (eternal religion).
Among the most significant questions posed by the sages were:

Vāsudeva, or Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, is the cause of all causes. Everything that exists emanates from the Lord. How this is so is explained in later chapters of this work. This work is described by Mahāprabhu Śrī Caitanya as the spotless Purāṇa because it contains the transcendental narration of the Personality of Godhead, Śrī Kṛṣṇa. The history of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is also very glorious. It was compiled by Śrī Vyāsadeva after he had attained maturity in transcendental knowledge. He wrote this under the instructions of Śrī Nāradajī, his spiritual master. Vyāsadeva compiled all Vedic literatures, containing the four divisions of the Vedas, the Vedānta-sūtras (or the Brahma-sūtras), the Purāṇas, the Mahābhārata, and so on. But nevertheless he was not satisfied. His dissatisfaction was observed by his spiritual master, and thus Nārada advised him to write on the transcendental activities of Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa. These transcendental activities are described specifically in the Tenth Canto of this work. But, in order to reach to the very substance, one must proceed gradually by developing knowledge of the categories.
It is natural that a philosophical mind wants to know about the origin of the creation. At night he sees the stars in the sky, and he naturally speculates about their inhabitants. Such inquiries are natural for man because man has a developed consciousness which is higher than that of the animals. The author of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam gives a direct answer to such inquiries. He says that the Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa is the origin of all creations. He is not only the creator of the universe, but the destroyer as well. The manifested cosmic nature is created at a certain period by the will of the Lord. It is maintained for some time, and then it is annihilated by His will. Therefore, the supreme will is behind all cosmic activities. Of course, there are atheists of various categories who do not believe in a creator, but that is due to a poor fund of knowledge. The modern scientist, for example, has created space satellites, and by some arrangement or other, these satellites are thrown into outer space to fly for some time at the control of the scientist who is far away. Similarly, all the universes with innumerable stars and planets are controlled by the intelligence of the Personality of Godhead.

Mahārāja came across news about Śrīla Prabhupāda’s Krishna-bhakti preaching in America. Intrigued, he traveled to Benares to meet the renowned spiritual teacher. When Prabhupāda later set out for Gorakhpur, Mahārāja followed him there. At Krishna Niketan in Gorakhpur, Mahārāja engaged in a discussion with Prabhupāda about the identity of Chaitanya Mahāprabhu. While Mahārāja asserted that Chaitanya Mahāprabhu is Krishna Himself, Prabhupāda firmly stated that He was a devotee of Krishna. Though Mahārāja initially spoke harshly, Prabhupāda responded with hearty laughter. It was only when Prabhupāda’s disciples arrived and offered obeisances that Mahārāja realized he was in the presence of Śrīla Prabhupāda. Pleased with Mahārāja’s devotion, Prabhupāda invited him to his room and continued to express his happiness at Mahārāja’s spirited defense of Chaitanya Mahāprabhu’s divine identity.
Perhaps Mahārāja’s most significant contributions are his Bhagavata Kathās, which he has shared across the world through his extensive travels. One notable incident that highlights his deep connection to Śrīmad Bhāgavatam took place in Vṛndāvana Dhāma. Once, Śrīla Prabhupāda noticed a light burning late into the night from a brahmachari’s room. He remarked, “It must be Rādhā Govinda reading the Bhāgavatam.” Indeed, when devotees checked, they found Mahārāja engrossed in the study of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam.
