Just as the people are agreeing with Amos’ message, then the arrow hits them. Amos begins with Damascus, and there will be seven nations before he hits the eighth, which is Israel. He says, “For three transgressions of Damascus and for four.” Amos is figuratively drawing a bullseye around Israel, maybe to show them their hypocrisy. We, humans, tend not to be able to see our own sin but very good at seeing it in others. This is why when Nathan the prophet came to David when he sinned with Bathsheba he presented as the sin from another. David had a very harsh judgment. Now we’re going to continue into the sixth nation which is Moab. The people are loving Amos’ messages as he pronounces judgment on them.
But, he is, in fact, drawing the bullseye a little closer to the target, now he’s at Moab which is just right next to them.
