The book of Esther does not have the word God or Yahweh in it. Despite that fact, the book shows us the workings of God in preserving the Jewish people when their enemies threatened to exterminate them. God used an orphaned Jewish girl at the advice of her cousin Mordecai to speak to the king of Persia on behalf of the Jewish people.

In the end, the evil was abated and the prime enemy of the Jewish people was destroyed. It appears as if all was coincident, however, we understand that God was at work to preserve the Jews and to keep His promise both to Abraham and King David, to raise up a seed through which the families of the earth will be blessed.

This book was written by Nehemiah. He records for us the events that happened around 444 BC when the third group of Jews exiles returned to Jerusalem. We see how Nehemiah trusted in God and how God opened the doors for him to return and rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. In the midst of opposition, Nehemiah built the wall and succeeded.

We also see the ministry of Ezra the scribe. He opened the book of the law and read it to the people from morning to till midday. We also see the great revival that took place at the Watergate. Find out more in today’s episode.

The book of Ezra is one of the examples, where we see the fulfillment of the promises of God to His people. We witness God using foreign kings to fulfill His plan and restore His people. Cyrus the king of Persia, gave out a decree for the building of the house of the Lord in Jerusalem, Judah. He claimed that God commanded Him to build Him a house.

Later Artaxerxes gave Ezra the suppliers to return to Jerusalem and to worship God in Judah. Though they were many foreign people who were opposed to the idea these kings had adopted, the LORD was with the people of Judah. They were able to build the Temple and restored worship in Judah.

2 Chronicles first documents the life and works of King Solomon. We learn how he asked for wisdom knowledge in order to lead and judge the people of God rightly. God granted his desire but also He gave him will wealth.

Then we learn of the lives of all the kings of Judah from Rehoboam to Zedekiah. We see their mistakes and their wise choices. Some started well and ended badly and others started badly but they ended well. In all their lives, God was very involved.

The book of First Chronicles gives the genealogical records from Adam to the 12 tribes of Israel. The first 9 Chapters deal with a list of names. In Chapter 10 we get the summary of the death of Saul. From Chapter 11 to 29, we learn of the story of David and the establishment of his kingdom.

The books of 1st and 2nd Kings are pieces of the same book. 2 Kings continues the story that began in 1 Kings. In this book we learn of the history of the Northern and Southern kings, that is to say, the kings of Israel and the kings of Judah, respectively.

We also note the ascension of Elijah and the beginning of the ministry of Elisha, which was accompanied by a significant number of signs and wonders. I believe the greatest of all the works of Elijah involved the conversion of the Syrian captain, Naaman who was a leper and was cleansed by washing seven times in the River Jordan.

In the same book, despite the reforms brought about by Joash the king of Judah, we see the destruction of Jerusalem and the beginning of the Babylonian captivity. Nevertheless, God kept the light of the house of David alive.

The Book of Kings with the History of the Kings of the kings of Israel. We open up with the details of the final days of King David’s and Adonijah’s failed attempt to take the kingdom.  We read of Solomon being established as king over Israel, taking over from David his father. From Chapter 3 to chapter 11 we see Solomon in his glory that was famed even in Africa (10:1) and his kingdom had peace on every side.

Sadly, chapter 11 records how Solomon’s heart drifted away from God and he served other gods. For this reason, the Kingdom of Israel was to be divided. When he died Rehoboam his son took over the kingdom and under him, it was reduced and the greater part was given to Jeroboam, who turned out to be a wicked and idolatrous man. He never turned from his wickedness even after a stern warning from the Man of God who came from Judah (13:1-34). The kings that followed after him were very wicked and they all walked after Jreboam ‘s wicked ways. Another notable character is Elijah, the prophet of the LORD who turned the hearts of the people back to God before Ahab the king of Israel. Nevertheless, Israel was prone to rebellion.

1 Kings ended at the death of Ahab, which marked the beginning of the reign of Ahaziah his son, his wicked son.
