In this episode we discuss the ending of 3rd John and reflect on this past season of the Mission Hills Bible Study Podcast. We’ve spent 2 episodes on each of the 5 shortest books of the Bible. Our prayer is that you’ve seen that Scripture is so deep and rich that you could spend your whole life studying it, living it out, and never get to the bottom of it. We hope you’ve enjoyed this deep dive into Scripture and that you’ve learned a few new ways to study it yourself. Now…go become more like Jesus and join him on mission!

Third John holds a unique place in the bible for a few reasons. First, it’s the shortest book of the Bible. Second, it’s a unique book in the New Testament because it is a personal letter that reflects ancient letters more than other books in the New Testament. John continues to focus on the intersection of truth and love, but now in the form of hospitality and ministry support. How do we apply John’s words today? Should we never accept help from an unbeliever, or does that application change today in a different time and culture? Our How to Read the Bible segment today is “Why Every Word in Scripture is Important.”

Last time, we went verse by verse through 2 John. So this time we are swinging the pendulum the other way and flying by the seat of our pants. We focus on what stood out to us from John’s letter and how to apply it to our lives. We get kind of emotional talking about God’s love for people and seeing them in the light of being worthy of love because they are made in God’s image. But that doesn’t mean we just way yes to everything. I can love someone and tell them “no” because that is what is best for them. John highlights the healthy tension between love and truth. Lastly, Kristy and Kelly join us for a conversation about reading the Bible with both your head and your heart; both logic and emotion.

We throw a curveball, but hopefully a helpful one. We are going verse by verse and show you how to make observations and ask questions about a text. We spend a lot less time than usual drawing conclusions and explaining the text because we want to show you how we do this. It’s a pretty unpolished episode.
