    Prophet and deliverer of Israel
    The Israelites had settled in the Land of Goshen in the time of Joseph and Jacob, but a new pharaoh arose who oppressed the children of Israel. At this time Moses was born to his father Amram, son of Kehath the Levite, who entered Egypt with Jacob's household; his mother was Jochebed (also Yocheved), who was kin to Kehath. Moses had one older (by seven years) sister, Miriam, and one older (by three years) brother, Aaron. The Pharaoh had commanded that all male Hebrew children born would be drowned in the river Nile, but Moses' mother placed him in an ark and concealed the ark in the bulrushes by the riverbank, where the baby was discovered and adopted by Pharaoh's daughter, and raised as an Egyptian. One day after Moses had reached adulthood he killed an Egyptian who was beating a Hebrew. Moses, in order to escape the Pharaoh's death penalty, fled to Midian (a desert country south of Judah), where he married Zipporah.

    Isaiah 34:16
    Seek = Search.
    the book of the LORD. This proves there was a book in existence, which could be searched. See App-47fail = be missing. Hebrew. 'adar. Not the same word as in Isa_19:5 (see note there). Occurs here in "former" portion, and Isa_40:26 in "latter"portion. See App-79. Isaiah 35 is the sequel to this long series of Burdens (Isa_13:1 Isa_35:10) and Woes; it sets forth the future return of Israel.
    Isaiah 34:1-17
    The Day of Jehovah
      1. Addressed to the world: Jews and Gentiles involved (Isa_34:1) 2. The shaking of the earth and the heavens (Isa_34:2-8) 3. The day of vengeance (Isa_34:9-17)This is one of the darkest chapters in the Bible. A worldwide judgment is described such as has never taken place in the history of the world. The indignation of the Lord is then upon all nations and upon their armies. Like chapter 33, it tells of the great judgments to come.
    book of the Lord — the volume in which the various prophecies and other parts of Scripture began henceforward to be collected together (Isa_30:8; Dan_9:2).
    Seek — (so Isa_8:16, Isa_8:20; Joh_5:39; Joh_7:52).
    no one ... fail — of these prophecies (Mat_5:18).
    none shall want ... mate — image from pairi

  • Priest Nagaya Sociology of Moses!
    THE SEDITION OF CORAH AND OF THE MULTITUDE AGAINST MOSES, AND AGAINST HIS BROTHER, CONCERNING THE PRIESTHOOD.
    1. THAT which is usually the case of great armies, and especially upon ill success, to be hard to be pleased, and governed with difficulty, did now befall the Jews; for they being in number six hundred thousand, and by reason of their great multitude not readily subject to their governors, even in prosperity, they at this time were more than usually angry, both against one another and against their leader, because of the distress they were in, and the calamities they then endured. Such a sedition overtook them, as we have not the like example either among the Greeks or the Barbarians, by which they were in danger of being all destroyed, but were notwithstanding saved by Moses, who would not remember that he had been almost stoned to death by them. Nor did God neglect to prevent their ruin; but, notwithstanding the indignities they had offered their legislator and the laws, and disobedience to the commandments which he had sent them by Moses, he delivered them from those terrible calamities which, without his providential care, had been brought upon them by this sedition. So I will first explain the cause whence this sedition arose, and then will give an account of the sedition itself; as also of what settlements made for their government after it was over.

    Pentecost
    (Πεντηκοστ?, scil. ?μ?ρα), the second of the three great annual festivals on which all the males were required to appear before the Lord in the national sanctuary, the other two being the feasts of Passover and Tabernacles. It fell in due course on the sixth day of Sivan, and its rites, according to the Law, were restricted to a single day. The most important passages relating to it are Exo_23:16; Lev_23:15-22; Num_28:26-31; Deu_16:9-12; The following article treats of its observance from a Scriptural as well as Talmudical point of view. SEE FESTIVAL.
    The Pentecost was the Jewish harvest-home, and the people were especially exhorted to rejoice before Jehovah with their families their servants, the Levite within their gates, the stranger, the fatherless and the widow, in the place chosen by God, for his name, as they brought a free-will offering, of their hand to Jehovah their God. Deu_16:10-11.
    The great feature of the celebration was the presentation of the two loaves made from the first-fruits of the wheat harvest. With the loaves, two lambs were offered as a Peace Offering, and all were waved before Jehovah, and given to the priests; the leaves being leavened, could not be offered on the altar.

    First reading — Numbers 1:1–19 In the first reading, in the wilderness, in the second month of the second year following the Exodus from Egypt, God directed Moses to take a census of the Israelite men age 20 years and up, "all those in Israel who are able to bear arms."[4] In verses 5 to 15 the heads of each of the tribes or army divisions are named.
