SUNDAY SERMON

On the final day, “everything sad will indeed come untrue: our tears will be dried, our sorrows will be comforted, our sicknesses healed, our losses made more than whole” (J. R. R. Tolkien).

On that day, we will be like happy calves basking in the springtime sun, savouring the fullness of our salvation in Christ and all his lovely, kind, and gracious words to us.

𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓹𝓮𝓸𝓹𝓵𝓮 𝓬𝓸𝓶𝓹𝓵𝓪𝓲𝓷𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓪𝓫𝓸𝓾𝓽 𝓲𝓷𝓳𝓾𝓼𝓽𝓲𝓬𝓮 𝓪𝓻𝓮, 𝓲𝓷 𝓯𝓪𝓬𝓽, 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓸𝓷𝓮𝓼 𝔀𝓱𝓸 𝓱𝓪𝓿𝓮 𝓪 𝓼𝓮𝓿𝓮𝓻𝓮 𝓳𝓾𝓼𝓽𝓲𝓬𝓮 𝓹𝓻𝓸𝓫𝓵𝓮𝓶.

The spiritual complacency of the people of Israel is dire. Before a God of goodness and love, the people have wearied him with their words of hypocrisy and blasphemy (Mal. 2:17).

In their rebellion, they daringly say, ‘God favours evildoers’ and critically ask, ‘Where is the God of justice?’ The Israelites have gone woke, but their wokeness has gone toxic, for it has lost sight of the truth of who God is.

Even though their complaint is faulty, God, however, responds to their complaint. God promises to send two messengers to Israel to awaken Israel to true justice (Mal. 3:1).

For this reason, the covenant of marriage cannot work apart from both FAITH and FAITHFULNESS.

If you need to constantly scan through your wife’s messages to see if she is cheating on you, there is no faith in your covenant to her.

If you have created a secret Tinder account on your private second phone, then you are not showing faithfulness to her in your covenant.

The covenant of marriage cannot work without covenant faith and faithfulness, and this is the issue at hand in Malachi 2:10-16.

‘𝓗𝓪𝓿𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓹𝓾𝓻𝓼𝓾𝓮𝓭 𝓹𝓸𝓹𝓾𝓵𝓪𝓻𝓲𝓽𝔂 𝓫𝔂 𝓶𝓸𝓭𝓲𝓯𝔂𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓦𝓸𝓻𝓭 𝓸𝓯 𝓖𝓸𝓭 𝓯𝓸𝓻 𝓼𝓸𝓶𝓮, 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓹𝓻𝓲𝓮𝓼𝓽𝓼 𝓯𝓸𝓾𝓷𝓭 𝓽𝓱𝓮𝓶𝓼𝓮𝓵𝓿𝓮𝓼 𝓭𝓲𝓼𝓰𝓻𝓪𝓬𝓮𝓭’ (𝓙𝓸𝔂𝓬𝓮 𝓑𝓪𝓵𝓭𝔀𝓲𝓷).

God established a “covenant with Levi” (Malachi 2:4). There were twelve tribes of Israel, and the tribe of Levi had a special agreement with God. The tribe of Levi pledged themselves to be the loyal priests of God over the nation of Israel.

One thousand years later, the situation is now dire. The Levitical priests in the day of Malachi were to be a reservoir of truth. But they had refashioned the message of God to suit their own whims and to fit in with the times.

By modifying and misinterpreting the Law, the priests caused many to fall into sin. The priests had become “broken cisterns” who could not retain the living water of truth (Jeremiah 2:13). The Word of God was being lost.
