The priests of Israel became spiritual frauds, pietistic phonies, and robed pretenders who orchestrated scandalous religious ceremonies for their own gain.

The priests were trying to keep the temple doors open by whatever means possible, even if that meant committing serious crimes against those whom they served.

Henry Nouwen, a popular spiritual writer, said, “There is the power that oppresses and destroys… [but there is also a] true power that liberates, reconciles and heals.”

That is to say, there are those, like Jesus, who wield power through the ministry of the towel, serving others (John 13:14). But there are others who do not lead and serve out of love but use their role and status to ‘rob’, ‘cheat’ and ‘abuse’ (Malachi 1:13-14).

What, then, does God say to the wicked?

What is God absolutely committed to? Malachi 1:11 says, 'My name will be great among the nations, from where the sun rises to where it sets. In every place incense and pure offerings will be brought to me, because my name will be great among the nations,” says the Lord Almighty.' In other words, God is absolutely committed to the universal fame of his name.
