How you act is who you are. In most of these laws, God ends with "I am the LORD your God"—an ancient way of saying, "These laws are a projection of my character." If you want to know what God is like, look at what He commands. Forgive. Be generous. Represent your neighbor justly. Care for the vulnerable. Holiness takes practical shape—it's not withdrawn from the world but expressed within it.

There's one fundamental requirement for someone who mediates life: they must be alive themselves. The Day of Atonement stands at the center of Leviticus, offering cleansing for the whole community once a year. The high priest enters the Holy of Holies with blood. The system requires constant maintenance—yearly atonement, ongoing sacrifice. It points forward to the need for something permanent.

If you wanted to become friends with the sun, you'd need protection from its heat. One failure, and you'd be vaporized. Nadab and Abihu offer unauthorized fire, and they die. Nearness to God is a gift, but it must be met with reverence and humility. This isn't about fear that drives us away—it's about reverence that draws us near with appropriate care.

God's law didn't include prisons. Near Eastern law legalized vengeance—cutting off hands, noses, impaling. God aimed for something different: restoring fractured relationships through restitution. If your sin causes loss, you pay it back plus a fifth. Both confession and restitution had to happen before you sacrificed to God. Sacrificing while ignoring your neighbor's loss is religious theater.

Relationship is not a status update—it's a practice. If you're attracted to someone, you spend time with them. If a friend hurts you, they make amends. Access to God is both costly and gracious.

Seven chapters earlier, Aaron made a golden calf and tried to shift blame. He didn't mediate their sin—he shaped it and gave it back more corrupt than before. And yet, God clothes him in holy garments and makes him high priest. God's grace doesn't wait for us to be qualified. He works through broken people. The tabernacle is completed, and God's glory fills it.

This passage draws us into God's glory, presence, fulfillment, obedience, joy, and nearness.

Israel survived the threatened abandonment of God. Now that He has returned through Moses's mediation, they respond with grateful responsibility. Craftsmen work carefully. Resources are offered freely. Devotion is often expressed through steady, unseen work. It's not always dramatic. Sometimes it's just showing up, giving generously, and doing the work with care.

God forgives Israel, but offers only the minimum: "I'll send an angel, but I'm not going with you." They're devastated. They realize they didn't care about what God gave them—they cared about His presence. Moses intercedes: "If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here." He'd rather wander in the wilderness with God than enter the Promised Land without Him. God relents.
