My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46)

From noon until three in the afternoon, the entire land was covered in darkness, as described in Matthew 27:45. This wasn't an eclipse, since an eclipse doesn't last for three hours. It was as if God turned off the light. At Jesus' birth, light pierced the midnight sky; but at His crucifixion, darkness fell during the brightest part of the day.

This sudden darkness signaled that something extraordinary and profound was unfolding. Until now, Jesus had endured physical suffering—beatings, the pain of crucifixion, and ridicule from others. But in this moment, He was stepping into the core of His mission: bearing the weight of humanity’s sin.

The darkness serves as a powerful reminder that these events are mysterious and beyond our full comprehension.

Proverbs 3: 5-6. Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Trusting in the Lord with all your heart and being fully committed to Him is crucial today. I often remind myself of this, especially in difficult times. The Hebrew word for trust means to lie down on – to put your entire weight on something. 

Listen, when we steadfastly follow God's teachings, acknowledge His presence, and pray with faith, we can find spiritual health, good habits, and true success in life. It's a beautiful reminder that divine guidance can lead to a fulfilling and balanced life.

Jesus said in Matthew 6:22, "If your eye is focused, your whole body will be full of light". When you commit yourself to God, everything falls into place, and your life is full of light. This is a spotlight on the Scripture

Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. (John 19:25-27)

One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: ‘Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself and us!’ (Luke 23:39)

Pastor Colin Smith said

Here is a man in the last hours of his life. He is completely lost, he is completely helpless, and he is still angry with God.

Suffering doesn’t always make people more tender. It can bring out the worst in us.  Sometimes pain intensifies a sinner’s hatred towards God. You can feel this man’s hostility towards the Son of God: “If you’re God, why don’t you do something?”

Do not underestimate how much the human heart hates God. The Scriptures tell us about the last day when God’s judgments are poured out. What do we find on that day? Do we find sinners repenting? No, the Bible tells us that people will call on the rocks to fall on them (Revelation 6:16), “We’d rather die than bow before you!”

Sin is a mighty power that grips the human soul. Apart from the grace of Christ, none of us will ever get free from it. This man was just hours away from eternity. Having given himself to a life of crime, he was now under the judgment of the law. Soon he would face the judgment of God and still he is raging against God. It is the story of his life.

His partner is crime is on the other side of Jesus in exactly the same position. This man also pours out insults on Jesus, but then something changes. A silence comes over his soul, and perhaps for the first time in his life, he really thinks about his own position.

Even as he was being tortured to death, Jesus remembered the purpose for which he came-- to open the door of divine forgiveness for all who would forgive even his executioners, because they know not what they are {were} doing.
