So how do you have hope when you feel surrounded by darkness? What are God’s people to do with life seems hopeless and joy is dried up? God through his prophet Joel is proclaiming about what he was going to do for his people in the last days when the Christ would come. We noticed in our last lesson that the apostle Peter stood up with the other apostles on the day of Pentecost and proclaimed that was happened was exactly what Joel had written (cf. Acts 2:15). Joel proclaimed that the Spirit would be poured out on all flesh (Joel 2:28-29). At the same time when the Spirit was poured out, God would also bring judgment (Joel 2:30-31). John the Baptizer preached this message in the first century, declaring that when Jesus came, he would bring a baptism of the Spirit and a baptism of fire (Matthew 3:10-12). This is why Joel said that only those who called on the name of the Lord would be saved (Joel 2:32). The apostle Peter then preached that everyone needed to repent and be baptized to be able to be forgiven of their sins and to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit that had been promised to all that the Lord calls to himself (Acts 2:38-39). Joel pictured this hope as a restoration of all that had been lost. God would return and live with his people, restoring the relationship and blessings that had been taken away because of their sins (Joel 2:18-27)…

We do not like fake people. We do not like to be around people that are insincere and are only wanting to put on a show. You might know people like this because you are able to truly know them while others are only able to see that same person’s public persona. Strangely, it can seem that religious leaders can fall into this trap. You might know spiritual leaders like elders, preachers, and teachers who act one way before the crowds but act a different way when they are alone or with a select few. Jesus has been teaching in the temple complex, handling the various objections and malicious questions that the religious leaders have thrown at him. Jesus has told them parables to show them their rejection and they unwillingness to listen to God. Jesus now delivers his final public sermon recorded in the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew 23 records this sermon that he delivers in the temple complex to the crowds and to his disciples. In this chapter Jesus is going to issue a series of seven woes…

The post 7 Ways To Be a Hypocrite (Matthew 23:1-15) appeared first on Biblical Truths from West Palm Beach church of Christ.
A sweet reunion finally occurs. Jacob and all his family have moved down to Egypt. Genesis 46:29 records this sweet reunion between Joseph and his father who he has not seen for more than 22 years. Jacob and the eleven sons settle in the land of Goshen. Genesis 47 records the severity of the famine. The famine is so severe that the Egyptians no longer have money to buy grain from Joseph (47:15). So the Egyptians ask Joseph what they are to do since they have no money to buy food any longer. Joseph accepts the Egyptians’ livestock in trade for grain. But that lasts about a year and the famine continues to be severe (47:18). So the Egyptians come to Joseph and say that they need grain again but they don’t have anything to trade because all that they have left are their bodies and their land. So the Egyptians offer to sell their land to Egypt in exchange for grain. So all the land of Egypt becomes owned by Pharaoh. Further, Joseph gives the Egyptians seed to sow in the land they just bought. Twenty percent of the harvest will belong to Pharaoh and the rest will belong to the Egyptians to live on. The Egyptians are grateful and happy with the administration of Joseph over the land of Egypt..

The post REWIND: The Rich Provision of God (Genesis 47-48) appeared first on Biblical Truths from West Palm Beach church of Christ.
Joseph is the second in power over Egypt. Pharaoh has set Joseph as viceroy over Egypt and answered to no one but Pharaoh himself. God has taken Joseph out of the pit of 13 years of misery and suffering and has given him extraordinary power. Joseph is now around 40 years old. The seven years of plenty have come and gone. Joseph has executed the plan of storing up grain for the seven years of severe famine that were coming. The famine has struck the land and people are coming from other nations to buy grain from Egypt. This is where Genesis 42 picks up the narrative. We have not seen what is going on back in Canaan with Joseph’s father and brothers. But chapter 42 tells us that they are suffering from the famine…

It was the sermon that opened the floodgates to the kingdom of God. The apostle Peter on the day of Pentecost stood up with the apostles and preached a sermon that began something like this. “We are not drunk, as you all think, but this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel” (cf. Acts 2:15). Peter then quotes and then explains the prophecy that is found in the second chapter of Joel. This passage in God’s word is the whole key to what you read about in the book of Acts. Joel was speaking about a glorious time for the whole world and Peter proclaims that now was the time that Joel was talking about. So let us look at what Joel said because Peter tells us that he was speaking about the time of Christ and the Christian age…

So if you had a chance to ask Jesus a question, what would you ask him? The religious leaders are going to have their chance to ask Jesus a question. The Pharisees are going to ask Jesus a question and the Sadducees are going to ask Jesus a question. Unfortunately, they are not asking Jesus a question to learn. You will notice in Matthew 22:15 at the Pharisees are plotting on how to trap Jesus in his words. The Sadducees are also trying to test and trip Jesus up. Back in Matthew 16:1 we read that this is the goal of both of these religious groups. Jesus even warned his disciples about the teachings of the Pharisees and Sadducees in Matthew 16:12. Religious groups who do not agree with each other are joining forces in agreement of their rejection of Jesus. The way Jesus is going to answer this questions are going to stun the crowds (cf. 22:22,35). In fact, you will see in verse 46 that after Jesus gets done with answering these questions, no one is going to dare to ask him any more questions. As we look at these questions and Jesus’ response to these questions, we are not going to spend as much time on the teaching. Rather, we will spend much of our time considering why these two religious groups failed to see Jesus and failed in their understanding of God…

The post Do You Know Jesus? (Matthew 22:15-46) appeared first on Biblical Truths from West Palm Beach church of Christ.
We are looking at the prophecy of Joel as God gives a message to his people to show them that he is all that they need. Joel stands as a timeless message as God teaches us what we should do when calamity and disaster strikes. In the first chapter of Joel, we read about the day of the Lord that has past. There has been an unprecedented locust attack that has completely wiped out the people’s prosperity. We learned that God shut down their worship, cutting off their sacrifices, so that they would go to the house of the Lord for worship. God wanted to get their eyes upward and move them to call out to him because he is sovereign over the earth. But God also wanted to get their eyes to look forward. The locust attack was a warning of another day of the Lord that was coming very soon. In Joel 1:15 the Lord proclaimed that another day of the Lord was near. As we come to chapter 2 we are going to see the day of the Lord described. Then God will tell the people what they should do…
