Speaker: Brent Kercheville. The first word in Romans 12:3 is the word “for.” This tells us that we are continuing the discussion that began in Romans 12:1-2. Remember that in Romans 12:2 that we were told that being living sacrifices means that we must not be conformed to this world but transformed by the renewing of our minds so that we can discern the will of God. God wants us to know his will through his word. But discerning his will requires a transformed mind. This is where Paul is going now in Romans 12:3-8. We need to have a different way of thinking. We also noted in our last lesson that, before we come to Christ, our thinking is darkened and futile (cf. Ephesians 4:17-18). So we need our minds renewed. We need a new way of thinking as disciples of Jesus. Paul is going to teach us how to think about ourselves, how to think about others, and what to do with this new way of thinking. Open your copies of God’s word to Romans 12:3-8 and let us consider together the new way of thinking God wants for each of us…

Hold Fast to the Cross (Hebrews 12:2-3)

Speaker: Brent Kercheville. We have been talking about how to live life on the altar. Romans 12:1 teaches that because of the mercies of God we are to become living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to him. In Romans 12:2 we learned that we must not allow our thoughts and actions to be conformed to this world but to be transformed by God through the renewing of our minds so we can discern the will of God. In Romans 12:3-8 Paul taught that we need to change the way we think about ourselves and others so that we will see that we have been given gifts that must be used joyfully so that God is glorified. In Romans 12:9-10 Paul now turns his attention to love. If we are going to be living sacrifices, then we must love. However, it is easy for us to think that we are loving the way God wants us to love because we can make our own definitions of what love is supposed to look like. So the scriptures have to teach us what godly love looks like. Since we are not to be conformed to the world but transformed, then we must listen to what God says love looks like and not what the world says love looks like. When talking about love, you might think about 1 Corinthians 13 where Paul describes what love looks like. But here in Romans 12:9-10 Paul gives us another description about what love looks like and what love does…

Genuine Love (Romans 12:9-10)

Speaker: Brent Kercheville. In our previous lesson we looked at a man named Philemon who had a runaway slave named Onesimus. Paul’s message to Philemon was the need for forgiveness. But the way Paul speaks to the need for reconciliation and forgiveness was not through command or obligation but out of love. In this lesson we are going to examine the letter for how one is to receive a person back…
