It’s been a while!

Hey Fam! I know it’s been way too long. I owe you apologies, hugs and an explanation. Unfortunately, you won’t be getting that right now because more important things are here!!!

Meditation Coach

Francisco Mendizabal sits down with Raf and discusses and meditation and how it improved his life and how it can improve your life.  as the founder of the company HackSelf.org, he believes that meditation should not be limited to the religious life and he also believes in using meditation techniques that are backed by scientific research.  I love this approach!!!!

There’s nothing like some science to get me excited about well…anything.

One of the things we discuss is  how meditation is way of taking control of your life.  When you meditate you are able to recognize your emotions and when you can recognize your emotional state, you are able to resist the urge to react to situations.  Reacting might be one of the worst things we do at times .

For example, I’m a very defensive person.  When I get critiqued or criticized, my first reaction is to be defensive and not listen to the feedback I am receiving.  This is because I feel as if my intelligence or knowledge of something is being attacked.  So, through many years of practice, I’ve improved so that, even though I still feel attacked, I don’t always react defensively.  I can instead recognize my emotion, internalize it and not let it control my behavior.  I take control of myself.

I highly encourage anyone out there to lookup meditation techniques and if you need to, reach out to Francisco on his website or Facebook page.  If you are afraid of being in touch with your emotions or think it’s stupid, then get in touch with that emotion first! It literally can start anywhere.  But the key is to not be afraid of what you find and be open to change.

Sound Familiar?

Have you ever sat down to watch an episode of Wheel of Fortune?  Probably yes.  In fact, most definitely yes.  Then, you’ll recognize the voice of Jim Thornton.  He’s the man behind many voices, including the announcer in Monster’s Inc. Jim was so kind by sitting with me for an hour and discussing his life, his career and other topics.  I loved listening to his insight on current radio, as well.   But one thing I made sure to ask him was, ‘How does somebody “make it” in voice acting?’.

Jim discusses how he moved out to LA at the age of 19 to pursue his career in voice work.  It is such a great story, because it makes you realize that it takes ambition, dedication and sacrifice to make it in the world of entertainment.  I hope you enjoy the episode and if you’re pursuing a career in voice acting, or just want to line up a gig to see what its like, then this is the episode for you.

Funky, Fresh and Cool

You ever have that friend that is just ‘cool’? Ya know, the person that you hope shows up to your party because they make it more fun.  The one always bringing the laughs and feel goods…Well, that’s Emma (Emmaline Rodriguez).  Emma is an outspoken, fun, hardworking, boss lady that I had the pleasure meeting a few months ago. Since then I’ve learned a few things about her:

* Her and her hair have a complicated, but loving relationship.

* She’s all about body positivity

* She’ll dance on a moments notice (she used to be a pro dancer, so that makes sense, right?)

* She NEVER STOPS WORKING

One thing I loved learning about Emma is her passion for growing.  She went to school for dancing and dropped out to enter into the world of fitness coaching and leading fitness classes.  That’s pretty badass considering she was only 21 at the time.  Now, years later and after having much success in that sphere, she is back in school.  She is pursuing a degree in forensic psychology, whatever that even means…

Basically, we should all look to her as motivation to do better.  Not only is she in school and work full time, but she’s also on that supportive life, helping her boyfriend with his apparel business.  #powercouple #gettingShitDone

I want to give a special shoutout to her for giving me the time to chat with her.  I also want to thank her for sharing her life with me and you guys. So Emma, if you’re reading this, thanks homie.

A literal doctor of movies and culture, Lizbette shares her upbringing. How she fell in love with horror movies and how film is changing today. We discuss Black Mirror, Get Out, Stranger Things, Lesbian Pulp Fiction and many other topics!

Lizbette may be one of the coolest women I’ve ever met. Probably because she’s living the dream of studying movies and culture. Ya know? The thing we all wanted to do as kids, tell the world what we thought about movies.    One thing I love about her is that she never stops thinking. She’s one of those people that can’t just ‘watch’ a movie. No, she has to analyze and connect dots the entire time. It’s apparent when she discusses movies, that she is gifted at finding influences in movies, from the score, to the writing to the acting.  Even while we were recording I would see her gaze into the distance and you could see the wheels spinning.

She recently even published an article about campy horror, whatever that is, lol. Check it out here!

I wish I could discuss more about horror in this blog post, but I can’t. Horror scares me and makes me afraid of my shadow, so I don’t really watch it. But I will say this. Lizbette is an inspiration of mine. Seeing her enjoying her life and fulfilling her dream lit a fire under my ass to get to work on this podcast and make it better.

Always Generous

Krystal Johnson is one of my close friends from graduate school. Aside from that, she is a former educator, admissions counselor at Howard University (Go Bison), amazing writer, and thought provoker. I love talking with Krystal, because I always leave our conversations smarter than I started.  She also has a grant that any black woman can apply for, read all about it here.

Now, instead of using this blog post to talk about all the amazing things she’s done, she thought it would be a good idea to talk to you about Pose, the FX show that gives people an insight into the world of New York during the late 80s.

Looking at the 80s is usually a common theme, cocaine, partying, bad fashion and a lot of electronic keyboards.  But Pose does something different. This show takes the viewer into the Ball Culture of New York. Starring MJ Rodriguez and Evan Peters, this show highlights various characters and their interaction with the social scene of New York.

But what impresses me the most is what they do behind the scenes. This show has the most (percentage) trans people working on it.  This is great, because we aren’t getting scenes written by people who do not relate to the material, but rather we are getting a show that has enabled itself to be more authentic and genuine when voicing the lives of the trans community in the 80s.

Singles and the City

CEO Stephanie Johnson, sits with me this week and shares all about her life.  Having been on Lifetime’s Love at First Flight, running a business and always on the move, it’s easy to get the impression that Stephanie has always known where she was heading in life.  It was so amazing listening to her describe her journey to where she is now, because it shatters that pipe dream and helped me realize that she just works her a** off.

Stephanie was laid off a few years back and was on the brink of homelessness.  Her savings slowly started drying up and she had to figure stuff out quickly.  Being broke really effects the mind, we even discuss how the ‘brain on poverty’ effects the mental health of people.  But anyways, she was able to look at that and just say ‘eff it’ and she began creating this amazing career she now has.

She runs events for singles in various cities.  Singles and the City is all about self improvement, self love and learning how to find the partner, treat them well and have a healthy relationship.  I mean, their slogan is, “There’s more to being single than dating”. That’s some deep s**t to read on the landing page of a site you think is going to help you hook up with strangers.  It’s this reason that I love what she does.

Stephanie loves love, but she wants people to be the best version of themselves before jumping into a relationship.  So listen to the episode, hear her story and enjoy! #learnSomething!

Food Myths
