Born in the Netherland, Niels Bijl looks back on a vibrant and extremely successful career in Europe, and, since January 2020, embraces a new and exciting life as a performing artist, chamber musician, collaborator, project organiser and lecturer in Victoria, Australia.

Some of Niels’ career highlights include working with legendary conductors Valeri Gergiev, Lorin Mazel, Mariss Jansons and Jaap van Zweden, with orchestras like the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, World Orchestra for Peace and Anima Eterna. CD recordings with his world renowned Aurelia Saxophone Quartet, recorder player Ronald Moelker and saxophonist Jay.

Melbourne based guitarist Kathleen Halloran, who is fast making herself known as one of the countries most exciting and in demand young performers. She works regularly with the likes of Kate Ceberano, Felix Riebl, Katie Noonan, Gorgi Coghlan and Jimi Hocking to name a few, and her guitar work has been heard on countless recordings, in orchestra pits for many musical theatre productions, and on major festival stages all around the country.

As a solo artist, Kathleen continues to impress and make a name for herself performing at events and festivals including the 2023 Adelaide Guitar Festival, The Melbourne Guitar Show, Crossroads Guitar Festival, The Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Stonnington Jazz Festival, and the Melbourne International Women’s Jazz festival.

The Count's is a live music venue with bar and bistro and one of the five venues that make up Monash University Performing Arts Centres (MPAC).

We have Lara Thoms APHIDS Executive Director about the upcoming performance. For thirty years, award-winning experimental arts organisation APHIDS have been creating unexpected art across Australia and around the globe. Collaborating with thousands of people across Melbourne to make new work, this year, APHIDS celebrates its lineage in one extraordinary night with An Evening of Performance II on the 5 July at Arrow on Swanston.

An Evening of Performance II will be filled with performances by Pony Cam, Deborah Kayser, Thea Baumann, Tra Mi Dinh, Lz Dunn, Catherine Ryan, Sammaneh Pourshafighi, DJ Sullivan and more. Hosted by Mish Grigor and Lara Thoms, with unexpected conceptual food offerings from Long Prawn, audiences can expect immersive installations, video work and a themed drink on arrival.

Coming up on the show on Monday 3rd June are two wonderful guests. First up we have Australian artist Michelle Hamer who we will be telling us about her new exhibition, I’m a Believer at Linden New Art (31 May until 25 August).

Michelle's work confronts the dismissive language of chronic health issues while delving into issues of gendered language, access and erasure in this striking new exhibition. When you consider the Victorian Government's enquiry into women's pain, the timeliness of this exhibition could not be more relevant. Michelle is known for her sustained practice with a focus on language which asks us to confront our fears, beliefs and aspirations. Michelle Hamer is a past winner of the Australian Tapestry Workshop’s Architecture in Tapestry Prize (2015), and the Fishersghost Macability Prize (2022). She works in the following mediums: hand stitching, digital photography and drawing. Michelle's exhibition is an integral story on the disenfranchisement felt by the sufferers of chronic health conditions, especially women.

After 5pm we will be speaking with Zaelea Nolte from the National Institute of Circus Arts upcoming performance called FAMOUS (14-22 June).

Zaelea started circus around the age of 6 and it continued to be a stable part of her life from that point on. Over the years she tried many different disciplines and is currently specialising in static trapeze, tightwire and Chinese pole while studying the Bachelor of Circus Arts at the national institute of circus arts in Melbourne in Australia. Combining her love for conceptual expression and acrobatics, Zaelea creates captivating performances that merge storytelling, symbolism, and emotion, taking audiences on transformative journeys. Her passion for fashion shines as she designs and sews visually stunning costumes, enhancing her artistic flair.
