Big Phat Pod

We’re back From the Cutting Room Floor for Part 2, and there was just WAY too much great material to leave behind!

This time we hang with the hilarious, sweet, and ridiculously talented Phat Band trombone section, and then spend some time with MY rhythm section—sharing more stories, memories, laughs, and behind-the-scenes moments with Gordon and the band.

PLUS…we have actual video evidence of something known as “The Cult of Kevin Axt” in Australia. I’m not even going to explain it. You just have to see it.

AND…do NOT leave early! At the end of the episode I have some VERY important information about our FINAL episode of Season 1. Trust me, you’re going to want to hear this.

Episode 19 is a special one! We’re pulling out some of our favorite interviews that didn’t make it into the regular episodes.

We are starting with the incomparable Wayne Bergeron and the Phat Band trumpet section. We dive even deeper into their memories of Gordon, the music, the band, and some stories we just couldn’t leave behind.

AND THEN…things go completely off the rails. Stick around because we’re ending with BLOOPERS from Season 1! Trust me, there were plenty.

The Big Phat Pod Episode 18 is a VERY special one!

We sit down with the ridiculously talented trombonist and singer Aubrey Logan, who grew up loving and playing Gordon’s music never imagining that years later, Gordon would be arranging music for her own album. Aubrey shares some incredible, funny and heartfelt stories about their time together and the impact Gordon had on her life and music.

AND…stick around until the end, because Andrew and I finally reveal which Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band album we’ll be diving into for Season 2 of The Big Phat Pod!

We are SO excited about this one.

EPISODE 17: THE JAZZ POLICE 25!

THIS is the one! The Jazz Police Gordon’s most iconic composition, played by bands all over the world and the chart that helped put Gordon and the Big Phat Band on the international map is back as

The Jazz Police 25

Andrew and I dig into this legendary tune and what’s NEW in the 25th anniversary version. We talk with Andy Waddell about his absolutely BURNING guitar solo, the rhythm section about that killer drum soli, and the trumpet section about the brand-new turnaround Gordon added to this updated arrangement.

25 years later, it still hits HARD. This one is ICONIC.

Production Part 2: Inside the Atmos Mix

We’re going even deeper behind the scenes of 25 Years of Phatness! In Part 2 of our Production series, I got to sit down with immersive audio pioneers Steve Genewick and Maurice Patist to explore the incredible Dolby Atmos mix of the album.

How do you take the massive sound of the Big Phat Band and turn it into a truly immersive listening experience? Steve and Maurice (along with Tommy Vicari) take us inside the process, the creative choices, and the technology that allowed Gordon’s music to surround you in a whole new way.

Tech heads will LOVE this one—and even if you don’t know Atmos from Adam, you’ll hear this music differently after this episode.

Production: Part 1!

Ever wonder what it takes to capture that massive Phat Band sound?

We go behind the scenes with recording engineer Talley Sherwood and live mixing wizard Ryan Mowrey to talk all things production—from recording the band in the studio to making it sound HUGE live, and everything in between.

There was SO much great stuff we had to make it a two-parter! Tech heads, this one’s for you, but also if you’ve ever wondered how all that Phatness comes together, you’re going to dig it!

This week on The Big Phat Pod, we dive into  A Taste of Honey  the iconic song made famous by the legendary Herb Alpert and reimagined in a way only Gordon Goodwin could.

Vangie had the INCREDIBLE privilege of sitting down with Herb himself to talk about Gordon, the music, and this very special new version. Then Andrew and Vangie also catch up with Wayne Bergeron about capturing that unmistakable Herb Alpert sound while giving it the full Gordon treatment, and lastly Andy Waddell takes us inside his absolutely BURNING guitar solo.

An iconic song, a legendary guest, incredible musicians…and Gordon’s fingerprints all over it. This is a very special one.

SHINE! — Part 2

The story of SHINE! continues, and this time it gets personal. Vangie Gunn-Goodwin and Andrew Kesler sit down with guitarist Andy Waddell to talk about his absolutely burning solo and the story of how he became part of the Phat Band family.

Then we turn to the incredible voices behind the track, Aria Gunn and David Loucks, two extraordinary vocalists who bring SHINE! to life with Vangie on all of the background vocals which are a very important part of this song's success.

Aria also shares memories of her beautiful relationship with her stepdad, Gordon, and the very special bond they formed through their shared love of jazz and music. Get ready for some tears all around.

This one has the groove, the musicianship and plenty of laughs—but it also has a whole lot of heart. An emotional and very special conclusion to our two-part journey inside SHINE!

We're kicking off a special two-part look at SHINE!—one of the most personal and uplifting songs from 25 Years of Phatness. Featuring powerhouse vocals by Vangie Gunn-Goodwin along with BGV's by Aria Gunn and David Michael Loucks.

Co-written by Gordon Goodwin, Vangie Gunn-Goodwin, and Donna Elaine Miller, SHINE! is a celebration of joy, purpose, and unapologetically being yourself. With a funky groove inspired by the spirit of Earth, Wind & Fire and Gordon's signature brilliance, this infectious chart is packed with energy, heart, and soul.

In Part One, Vangie and Andrew Kesler take listeners back to the origin of the song, sharing how SHINE! came to life and why it became such a meaningful part of the album. You'll also hear an incredible conversation with the Big Phat Band rhythm section as they discuss the groove, the feel, and the musical magic that drives this high-energy chart.

Filled with laughter, inspiration, and plenty of behind-the-scenes stories, this episode is a celebration of the music, the musicians, and the joy that SHINE! was meant to bring.

Because sometimes...the best thing you can do is simply SHINE!
