    Publisher's Summary:
One of a series of six retellings of Jane Austen's great works, this Real Reads Pride and Prejudice is true to the original in many ways. It is true to the plot, character, and themes, and the author successfully imitates Austen's style and syntax. A wonderful introduction to this classic work of literature, and an enjoyable listening experience in its own right.
    Critic Reviews:
These lively, attractive little volumes are ideal. Charmingly presented and skilfully written, they capture something of the flavour and tone of Jane Austens peerless craft, while simplifying the narrative and dialogue. Even as a purist, I think these Real Reads are a Real Help for the younger, novice reader. (Josephine Ross, author of Jane Austen: A Companion)
The perfect introduction to the pleasures of Jane Austens work; pleasures which may well last a lifetime. (Caroline Sanderson, author of A Rambling Fancy: In the Footsteps of Jane Austen)
Real Reads will appeal enormously to young people who have seen the adaptations and are looking for a book that fulfils the same function. We expect to sell a lot of copies. (Ann Channon, Jane Austens House Museum, Chawton)
These books will provide children with a wonderful introduction to Jane Austen, and are equally good for their parents who simply want a quick fix of Austen for themselves. (Donna Lodge, Jane Austen Centre, Bath)

    History and Ghosts
What made the experience of listening to A Warning to the Curious the most enjoyable?
A combination of history and ghosts creates an attractive package for me and I enjoyed James's story.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Mr. Paxton is my favorite character and his curious nature is what makes and unravels his quest so thoroughly.
What about David Collingss performance did you like?
David Colling's performance is measured, yet lively as he brings to life all of M.R. Jame's characters. His knowledge of the story is also clear, lending a sparkle to his performance.
A Warning to the Curious by Montague Rhodes James.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, I would recommend this audiobook to a friend. It is an interesting ghost story and read well by David Collings. In his stories, the author M.R. James, takes us to another time and place. I would like to introduce my friends to M.R. James stories. This audiobook for this story and the others are easier and more fun to first hear than to read the print, although, I do enjoy James' books.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Warning to the Curious?
There were several memorable moments in A Warning to the Curious. One was when the two gentlemen began to see in the hallway the shadow or the weak ghost that had been following Mr. Paxton. Another was when the three were walking to the mound and became aware of the "dim presences" and "restraint hostility" of something nearby them. James' descriptions are pleasing and often startling. Another moment is when the two gentlemen found Mr. Paxton lying on the beach, "after the snares of death overtook him". I love the way James' writes.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The scene where Mr. Paxton is first explaining to the two gentlemen how he came to find the crown is my favorite because the writing allows you to go where Paxton went and share his experiences. In his audiobook reading, this scene is where David Collings is superb.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The story is overall enjoyable and David Collings is an ideal narrator.
    Any additional comments?
Montague Rhodes James' stories are unique and enjoyable. He lived at a different time and was well educated. This is evident in his ghost stories.
    A WARNING TO THE CURIOUS.
Just finished this audiobook and i have to say i enjoyed it immensely.A good adaptation of the MR.JAMES classic helped in no small part by an excellent narration by David Collings which is so very important when conveying the mood and atmosphere of any MR.JAMES story. If you are looking for a scary story which transports you to the setting look no further.

Walt Whitmans work influenced many later poetic voices, and no work more so than this epic American poem, 'Leaves of Grass', which he spent his entire life writing and constantly revising until his death.
The work heralded a new dynamic relationship in poetry, with its candid and sensual interpretation of his observations and thoughts on the human spirit and all aspects of existence at a time when poetic tradition employed symbolism or allegory.
It has been referred to as the ultimate representation of what America was in the 19th century and is masterfully immortalised by actor Ed Begley.

'Now what I want is Facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts. Facts alone are wanted in life.' So says Thomas Gradgrind in Dickens' immortal story set in the North of England in the 19th century.
Gradgrind, a local industrialist, gave this advice to his children, set against a backdrop of huge wealth and even huger poverty, where the rich marry for money and the poor cannot afford to divorce. The greed leads to gambling and the rich rule over the poor, who suffer terribly. As Gradgrind grows older, he begins to question his stringent approach to education...though is it already too late for his own children?

    Dickens - Always a Master
As some reviewers have pointed out, this is not the best work Dickens has produced. For me that merely means that it is a very good piece of literature rather than a superb one. It could have profited from expanded examination of various social, cultural, political and economical themes of the day that were touched upon only lightly, but he did a fine job of treating those issues he chose to examine. That is enough for me to recommend the book heartly to all as a short and enjoyable read with enough involvement with issues that still resonate today to keep you happily interested.
    This Kindle edition is excellent.
    Lovely tale
Someone's characterization is remarkable as always. The characters are people like we meet every day and the story speaks to your heart.
    Class Conflict
Perhaps not the "typical" Dickens, if there is such a thing, but a fascinating look at the conflict between classes in Victorian England.

    Four Stars

    Like many of Dicken's novels
One must remember that this was written in the 19th century and can be a bit difficult to read, with extremely long and detailed descriptions of location, thought and action not found in today's works. Like many of Dicken's novels, the plot is convoluted and chronicles the tale of a young person and his family who have fallen on hard times and the people who both help and hinder their well being. Highly recommended for those who enjoy these old classics or just the patient reader who enjoys a good story with a happy ending.
Dickens shows sometimes in his earlier novels - this is ...
Dickens shows sometimes in his earlier novels - this is his 2nd - that he is getting paid by the word/installment. He can get a little wordy. Mrs. Nickleby had one-sentence that was three pages long, but Oh!, what a sentence, he is a magician with verbose characters and narration.
but still a great read (or listen)
Dickens as usual is a little hard to follow in places, but still a great read (or listen).
    Five Stars
    Great novel with pictures
    Dickens was a genius.
Love this story! Dickens was an amazingly prolific writer. His books are challenging but great stories. Having lived in England for a year I enjoy reading about the familiar places there & the local terms & phrases.

  • The Poetry of Lord Byron, Volume I: Fugitive Pieces Audiobook by George Gordon Byron

Title: The Poetry of Lord Byron, Volume I: Fugitive Pieces
    Author: George Gordon Byron
    Narrator: Robert Bethune
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 9 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-01-10
    Publisher: Freshwater Seas
Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
George Gordon, later Lord Byron, published Fugitive Pieces in 1806 when he was only 18 years old. It was printed, but Byron's friends, particularly Reverend Thomas Beecher, advised him that it contained poems that were scandalously amorous, particularly the poem "To Mary". Byron suppressed it by having all the copies destroyed - or so he thought. As it happened, Thomas Beecher himself kept his copy, and there were three other copies that were not destroyed.
Reverend Beecher's opinion was certainly correct, though his advice was inexcusable. The amorous poetry in this volume, particularly "To Mary", is some of the most erotic serious poetry in English up to that time. Byron was an intensely emotional, intensely sexual young man, and his poetry shows it very clearly. It also shows the work of a young man with the makings of not only a serious poet, but a skillful satirist and humorist as well. While many of the poems are deeply romantic, indeed rather melodramatic effusions of the sort one would expect from the young man who would become a founder of the Romantic movement, others read more like Ogden Nashwitty, lively and skillfully done in happy, bouncing rhymes and meters, not at all what one might expect.
This recording of the volume Fugitive Pieces is based on the original volume as later published in limited-edition form. For that reason, the reader who knows Byrons poetry well will notice that some of the texts used here differ, sometimes markedly, from the versions more commonly found. Byron revised and republished these early poems several times under several titles, most notably Pieces on Various Occasions and Hours of Idleness. Later titles in this series, which aims to present the whole of Byrons poetry, will use the later versions of these same poems. In some cases the two versions are nearly identical.

Title: The Poetry of Lord Byron, Volume II: Hours of Idleness
    Author: George Gordon Byron
    Narrator: Robert Bethune
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-01-10
    Publisher: Freshwater Seas
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
For those who love Byrons poetry, the value of this work is not so much the poetry itself as the promise of what is to come, it is fascinating to see how his power as a poet is constantly growing and to see how his enormously romantic heart and soul goes about fashioning itself.
Though a young man, he often writes as if he were old, musing on days gone by, especially his schoolboy life at Harrow. He tries his hand at several genres: classical translation, narrative poetry, love poetry, philosophical musings. George Gordon, Lord Byron, published his first book of poetry in 1806 when he was only 18 years old. However, Byron suppressed it by having all the copies destroyed - or so he thought. There were four copies that were not destroyed. However, Byron later republished almost all of those poems, and added more, in January 1807, under the title Poems on Various Occasions. Then, in the early summer of 1807, he republished most of those poems and added still more, under the title of Hours of Idleness. And finally, in 1808, he went through the process again, selecting some of the poems he had already published and adding a few more; this time, the title was Poems Original and Translated.
As if that isnt complicated enough, he also changed the texts of most of the poems each time around, sometimes only slightly, other times quite significantly. It would be unfair to ask the listener to buy multiple copies of the same poem. Furthermore, within the confines of an audiobook, it is just not possible to trace all the changes Byron made in the poems. Therefore, this recording is a collection of the poems included in the 1807 and 1808 publications, and does not include the poems published in 1806, and it uses the last version of each poem as Byron finally left it after any and all revisions.
