Memorable.

This is not an easy book. The narrative is not one of those that pulls you along, rather its one that you need to work at - participate in. A highly stylised work(think classic Russian writting of the late 19th Century), it is a deeply descriptive journey into the heart and mind of a Russia on the cusp of great change. The characters are deeply memorable, the portrait of the land and its people vivid and loving. The narrator does an outstanding job.

May be appreciated by fans of Haruki Murakami.

Might be a decent book.....

This narrator drove me crazy and I confess to not being able to finish more than an hour or two.

All the characters sounded the same, and he was not adept at instilling emotion. Read the book instead...

I had to erase the audiobook after listening to almost half of it with a great effort to stop myself from turning it off expecting the story to lift up.

Stunning

A book of this calibre is a rare thing indeed. James Meek has tuned his writing skills to a very fine and unique pitch, and maintains it throughout. Every page is a work of art. Stunning.

An amazing book everyone should read.

An amazing book everyone should read. You will not be able to stop listening. It takes you into the personal lives of young women during WWII and how some of them became vital to the secret agencies that helped win the war. I only wish it would have contiued into their lives after the war.

Thoroughly enjoyable

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book and will no doubt listen again at some point in the future. The plot is very interesting and gives some helpful insights into some historical aspects of WWII in England. The story does not move exceptionally fast, yet it draws the reader in and keeps you wanting to hear more. I wanted it to keep going after I got to the end... I thought it was well-read and would definitely recommend it.

what there was was great

I am having trouble rating this book. I gave it a two because it appears to be incomplete. The premise holds your interest but several times during the story the author hints at additional information but then fails to deliver. Several of the things she noted by calling attention to them were unresolved at the conclusion of the book. It almost seems to be a very badly abridged book. If the author ever decides to try reconciling the questions we are left with I would love to "read" the book once again.

What it leaves you with at the conclusion is more or less a tooth ache of the mind. I am interested in the opinion of other readers and see if it is only me that is dissatisfied.

Is there a sequel?

What a great idea for a book. I wish the book was actually realized. What just happened and what will happen next? This could have been developed into a real classic, I think I got the kid's version. The reader was a little shrill at times, but mostly good.

Fizzled....

This book fizzled for me, too....I never finished it. The story lines just didn't pan out for me and I lost interest....

Historical Disaster

I always love Simon Jones and even enjoyed most of the story, but the author needs to do a little more historical research. She has confused the 14th Century with the 16th Century. Her idea of period dress goes much better 200 years in the future with laced up bodices, skirts, "petticoats" and snoods. The middle-class land-owners, yeomen, have been reduced to paid servants. The "shilling" makes a surprising introduction about 100 years too early and Laudanum, a tincture of poppy (opium) is way out of place by 400 years (poppy was available, just not as laudanum). There are so many more inacurate historical falsities that it was driving me crazy. I started keeping a list! I will say that some of what she has written about the priest John Wycliffe was well done, but. . . it was not enough to save this book. So if you don't like poorly done history, don't get this book. It will only disappoint you!

extremely enjoyable

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love this era and already had familiarity with it, yet I still learned more by reading this novel. The overlay of spirituality in the piece also satisfied me, as the specifics of Julian of Norwich's visions and writings were new to me. The novel truly was one that I did not want to put down.

Quite disappointing

I have a keen interest in the time period that this book deals with, the synopsis sounded good and I would listen to the reader read a phone book, but this is book number two that I'm sorry I bought here.

Simon Jones is a favorite of mine, and he reads a mean Dick Francis. However, even he couldn't keep me from turning this one off more than an hour from the end. I liked the characters, and listened for many hours to hear more about them, but the author killed too many of them off. I enjoyed the interplay of the characters, but was frustrated by the amount of excess inner monologue she included in every conversation - effectively doubling the length of the book! I understand the friction between the religions at the time, but I really don't need that stuffed in my face a hundred times in 20 chapters, I get it, the Christians hated the Jews, go back to telling me the story please.

So, despite the fine reader and a love of the time period, by the point at which two different characters had died senslessly in the same location, at the hands of the same *nameless person*, I felt sufficiently insulted to quit listening. Very sad. If you must read this one, try the abridged version if at all. I give first half of the book two stars, as I rather liked it. The rest? Hardly worth a star at all for being such a letdown.

riveting

a view into the lives of a 14th century demesne, and the interaction with the domineering church and nobility of the time. Wonderfully enveloping..you could almost be there! And superbly read...I highly recommend this if you like the period.

Excellent Listen

This definitely kept my attention, it is an engaging story, with great attention to the detail of the time.

I loved this story about Italy and the characters. It was heart warming and was a wonderful description of Liguria and Piedmont. Despite the sadness there was a really different take on the holocaust that showed that non-jews could make a difference by defiance

The little know world of emigre London, circa 1795

It took a bit of listening to come to know the characters, but Tim Curry's reading of this intriguing story soon had me hooked. Astronomy, the French revolution, political intrigue, "murder most dire", shady and sad characters, French aristocrats and subtrefuge, all wrapped up in a story set in the back streets and salon's of old London during the days of the French Republic. As you follow the trail of murders, you meet one interesting character after another. Many are not who they first seem to be, adding a wonderful element of unfolding surprise. Curry brings each to life. His French and various English class accents are spot on, and he changes vocal characterizations smoothly. Truly, a tour do force of dramatic reading.

great narrator

It would have been an OK mystery book if I had read it, but listening to this version was like being there. I've never heard another reader/narrator who did such a great job making you forget that all the voices were coming from one man. I couldn't wait to get back to my iPod to hear how it was going to turn out.

A difficult book to follow

Some books are easier to listen to than others. This book is difficult to follow on tape because of the French names. It is a slow start and had an only mildly satisfying ending. The characters are also difficult to relate to. I never really cared about any of them.

Really Wonderful!

This is a powerful book of love, redemption and history. I learned so much about the Hawaii before Statehood and the various ethnicities that make up her rich culture. Amazing detail about WWII in Asia and the Japanese invasions and brutal treatment. Also, the author has a keen understanding of jazz and its place in American history. Two beautiful love stories and familial love all intertwined to turn a compelling story into a remarkable novel!! Really enjoyable and kudos to the reader for such fantastic character renditions!

I'm sorry but it was pretty awful.

Are you familiar with the "Bad Hemingway" writing contest? Select randomly anywhere from among the pages of pretentious prose in Song of Exile and you'll have a worthy contender. The story is tedious while the writing is artless, self-indulgent, and comically melodramatic. Meanwhile, the sonorous droning of the narrator is relieved only by the interposition of a whole lot of really bad dialect. One gathers she imagines that she is good at it. I love Hawai`i and Hawaiian culture. I love WWII history and I love jazz. I hated this book, which misused all of these. I mean no disrespect to anyone associated with this book but I urge anyone who is considering purchasing it to listen carefully to the preview. In my six years as an Audible listener this is the first time I failed to do so and I deeply regret it.

An exquisitely dark and compelling novel

This was my first time reading a book by Marina Fiorato but it will certainly not be my last.

Straight away we are thrown into the story of Annie Stride, a prostitute in London in 1853, who has reached the point of desperation and is contemplating ending her life. Standing on the brink Annie is saved by an artist who sees something special about her and makes her his muse, catapulting her into a new world of beauty, art, and privilege. But all is not as it seems - a murderer is on the loose and they know who Annie is...

CRIMSON & BONE by Marina Fiorato develops at a good, steady pace with plenty of colour and vibrant description to really capture your imagination. Yet, always in the background, there is a sense of darkness and doom hovering, waiting for an opportunity to pounce, which adds a delicious edge to this tale.

Throughout the novel, I connected with the characters even though they all seem to have secrets to hide. Constantly questioning my opinions while reading, the ending leaves no stone unturned as surprising truths are revealed.

CRIMSON & BONE by Marina Fiorato is a compelling story of art, beauty, danger and lies, and I cannot wait to read everything this author has written so far. It is an exquisitely dark historical novel that will keep you gripped throughout.
