  • It was NOT a "bad day" - it was sexism, fetishism, racism, xenophobia

We stand with our AAPI siblings. Please visit this list of Stop Asian Hate Resources to find out more about how you can help: https://linktr.ee/stopasianhateresources

In this bonusode, we debrief about last week's tragedy and share some frames for processing hate crimes.

We needed some time and space to process and as you'll hear, we're still struggling but we felt it is important for us to use whatever platform we have to drive dialogue and action around this. Coincidentally, today, March 24th, the day we recorded has been lifted as a Day of Solidarity for #stopasianhate (see more info below from the instagram @stopasianhate)

Many of us have been inspired by the protests against the ongoing wave of attacks targeting the Asian community but have been unable to attend in-person - this event allows us to show our support for the community from anywhere in the world and stand united against racism.

In the United States, over 3700 self-reported incidents of anti-Asian discrimination have been recorded since February 2020, over 10 a day. The US has also seen a 150% increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans despite overall hate crimes going down 7% with a disproportionate number targeting women.

The increased targeting has not been limited to the United States. In Vancouver, Canada, hate crimes against Asian-Canadians increased by 717%. 8 in 10 Asian-Australians have experienced instances of racism since 2020.

On March 16, 2021, 6 women of Asian descent were gunned down in #Atlanta, Georgia.

#EnoughIsEnough. It's time to stand up and speak out.

  • What Your One BIPOC Friend Wants You to Know

In this episode we talk sisterhood between women of color and white women.

Two weeks ago, we discussed the impact and importance of BIPOC-to-BIPOC sisterhood.

Though the voice of this podcast amplifies BIPOC/Mixed Race Unicorns today we are mostly speaking directly to our white co-conspirators about sisterhood. This episode was specifically designed to empower our white sisters and intentionally deepen relationships by having a very clear conversation about race as it pertains to friendship. As stated in this episode, this topic is NOT meant to divide nor shame but to strengthen bonds between white women and BIPOC women so we can become a more fiercely coalesced unit.

We heavily reference the article When White Women Cry: How White Women’s Tears Oppress Women of Color in this episode. This article is a part of our March toolkit. Linked down below. If you haven’t had an opportunity to read it, we strongly encourage you to before listening to the episode. In this episode we will discuss:

    Tokenism
The Toolkit Article -When White Women Cry: How White Women’s Tears Oppress Women of Color
                One up, one down complexities
                Checking privileges
How stereotypes impact empathy, behaviors, and perceptions
Practical and helpful steps from the article to aid in addressing issue of race in your friendship
How these steps apply to deepen Sisterhood
Honorary whiteness and whitewashing of your friends
Why having interracial friendships are so vital
    Diversifying your friend group
What your one BIPOC friend wants you to know
Toni Morrison’s short story: Recitatif (also part of this month’s Toolkit)
The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett (bonus read)

As always, we end in our Happy Place: hint* we’re catching up on our Z’s and Dani feels “called out”?!

  • BIPOC Sisterhood

In this episode we talk sisterhood.

“I got all my sisters with me.”- Sister Sledge

It’s Women’s History Month, so for the month’s first of two episode on Sisterhood we’re cracking into BIPOC Sisterhood. This episode heavily references the Michella Obama podcast – Episode 5: The Gift of Girlfriends with Denielle, Sharon, and Kelly. This podcast is an action point of our March Toolkit. Make sure to reference our Instagram for a written copy or check out our bonus episode for the March Toolkit. In this episode we discuss:

    • How Sisterhood is portrayed in the entertainment industry
    • How we define Sisterhood
    • How we relate to our blood sisters
    • The kinship between Mixed-Race Unicorns
    • The important of BIPOC to BIPOC female friendship
    • The Michelle Obama podcast and how much we relate to it
    • The ability to be open and vulnerable when establishing friendships
    • Actively seeking out friendships with BIPOC women
    • “Making the time” for friendships
    • What it looks like to be intentional in seeking and cultivating a Sisterhood
    • This episode was leaving us feeling quite positive so of course we have to pause that with Dani and Dameca Get Mad at The World. This week’s topic: Why! Are! They! Still! #goldenglobessowhite!!!  We spend a brief time talking why we wish we could write off award shows but how they are still a necessary part of industry.

Ending, as always, in our Happy Place this week is so applicable! hint get out your notepads and straws because these Happy Places double as self-care.

    • Unicorns at the Movies: One Night in Miami

This week’s episode is a Unicorns at the Movies! We are reviewing the Kemp Powers movie, One Night in Miami, directed by Regina King. This particular movie is one of the action points of this month’s Toolkit (There’s still time to read up and participate in this month’s toolkit. All the information is located on our Instagram page @biracialunicorns).

We both enjoyed watching this fictional interpretation of true events that happened on the night of February 25th when a young and newest heavy weight champion of the world, Cassius Clay, the sports icon Jim Brown, the singing sensation Sam Cook, and civil rights activist Malcolm X spend a night together at the Hampton Hotel in Miami. This movie was beautifully directed and perfectly cast with the talents of Kingsley Ben-Adir, Eli Gorgee, Aldis Hodge, and Leslie Odom Jr. In this episode expect to hear:

      • A brief summary of the movie
      • Our overall reaction of the movie
      • A bit more background information on writer Kemp Powers and director Regina King
      • Our thoughts on the relationships on conflicts between the main characters (especially the characters of Malcolm X and Sam Cook).
      • Our views on the portrayal of Malcolm X in this movie and how it differs from past depictions
      • Why we thought this movie was significant to watch during Black History Month.
      • We would love to hear your thoughts on One Night in Miami, so please feel free to reach out with your review OR if you have a movie in mind you’d like us to watch and review on the show, let us know (our information is down below).

In this episode, we also reference a previous Unicorns at the Movies episode about the film American Son. You can check it out at https://bit.ly/3ungZQb.

Alongside Unicorns at The Movies, we also have Dani and Dameca Get Mad at the World! And this week ties too perfectly with our Black History month theme. A Montessori school in Utah became news worth when the parents of the school requested their children opt out of the Black History Month curriculum this year…oh you’ll just have to listen to know how we REALLY felt about that.

We NEEDED something to end the show on a higher note after that last segment, and this week’s HAPPY PLACE will hopefully put you in a better mood. Hint* - Sometimes you need to spit hot fire and sometimes you got to cool off the internet.

      • Black History Has Its Eye on You

In this episode we talk Black History Month.

It’s February, the shortest and also one of the coldest months of year which can only mean one thing, Black History month is upon us once more.  In the past we have not been timid about our feelings and views on Black History month, so, this episode we are detailing our thoughts, reservations, and hopes for Black history.  This will also be our first episode where we implement our first Toolkit topic. Make sure you listen to the bonus episode to be up to speed or check out our Instagram. In this episode we discuss:

The problem with compartmentalizing Black History to a singular month
The impact of separating Black History from American (and world) history
The separation between other “non-white” history and Black history
                    Black History vs Black Future
Being mixed during Black History Month – Dameca shares her thoughts and experience
Reflections on “The Gates of Freedom Here?” by Angela Davis
Does true integration of “non-white” history mean the erasure of “white history”?

This week on Dani and Dameca Get Mad At The World, we stay on topic and share some of the cringy ways teachers choose to celebrate Black History month.

Ending our episode is our Happy Place, * hint – they are both hot, steamy, and involve the return of one of the show’s favorite topics.

      About Biracial Unicorns

      From the publisher's feed

Two mixed race girls, who have mixed feelings about this world we're living in, shed light on issues of race and gender (and other divisive issues) in a way that is healthy, respectful, comical, honest, and a little geeky.
