  • Episode 81: Hissyfit
    Leading Off
    It was an eventful weekend, and Bird’s Eye View is here to fail to make sense of it. The top of the show includes your regular installments of the Drink of the Week, Medical Wing, and  TWotT:

    * Press room tough guy, per @GordonEdes
    * J.J. Hardy Panic Button, care of @EddieInTheYard
    * Cornering the market on posts about the 2016 ASG with @RichDubroffCSN
    * Good news from @Dylan_Bundy
    * “Who wants a mustache ride,” asks @AndrewEmmer

    Hissy Fit

    Manny Machado had what we would call a “bad weekend.” Jake already opined on the matter, so the guys looked for a fresh perspective on the matter. For this, the old guys went to their go-to brilliant young sports guy: Cody Colston. Cody helps Jake and Scott work through the weekend’s events, and decide if Manny Machado is a bad guy forever, or if baseball fans need to take a chill pill.

    Up and Down

    Up is down, black is white, the rotation is upside down. The bottom of the rotation (including Kevin Gausman) is providing stability, whereas the top of the rotation is the real Achilles Heel (all apologies to Johan Santana) of the team. The guys look at the stats and the guts of what is right and what is wrong with the Orioles’ rotation.

    Fantasy Boss

    Scott wins again! The lead is now 7-3, as Adam Jones clubbed four XBHs, whereas Manny Machado only hit two. This week, Scott’s stat is xFIP (Expected Fielding Independent Pitching). Basically, this is FIP, which considers park-specific factors. Jake took Kevin Gausman, and Scott selected Wei-Yin Chen.

    Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.

  • Episode 80: Wicked Game
    Leading Off
    Another uneven week is in the books, as the Orioles ended the month of May a single game over .500. It was a rough stretch of games, enough to drive the guys to the Drink of the Week. In that time, much has changed in the Medical Wing, but no updates are nearly as fun as the TWotT:

    * You shall not pass, Mark Reynolds! (@cdwill77)
    * Speed kills (@AStetka)
    * Ode to Baltimore Food (@Britt_Ghiroli)
    * Rumor has it (@mlbtraderumors)
    * Unlikely pitchman  (@Fake_Buck)
    * You Don’t Mess with the Johan (@masnRoch)

    Wicked Game

    Nelson Cruz getting nailed on the hand proved (as if there was need for additional proof) that baseball can be a wicked game. The guys are joined by Matt Taylor of The Roar from 34 to discuss Nelson Cruz, and what he has meant to the 2014 Orioles. They discuss Cruz’s place in the hearts and minds of Orioles fans, and what makes crazy people like us write and talk about our beloved Birds. Matt writes a fantastic blog, but we find he’s also a great guy with whom to talk all things O’s.

    Fantasy Boss

    Again? The rout is on! Scott wins again, as his choice (Preston Guilmet) had a better K/BB ratio than Jake’s (Zach Britton). Jake is bitter, but Scott streaks ahead to a 6-3 lead, and selects XBH for this week’s category. Jake (foolishly) selected Manny Machado, and Scott (hopefully not foolishly) went with Adam Jones

  • Episode 79: Stuck in the Middle
    Leading Off
    On a night in which the Orioles displayed a little 2012-style Orioles Magic, Episode 79 starts off with the Drink of the Week, the Medical Wing before taking a look at the TWotT:

    * Pigtown Pride, according to @BrettHollander
    * Babies EVERYWHERE, as told by @Orioles101 and @EddieInTheYard
    * Jones’ pitch efficiency (@masnSteve)
    * BrachWatch 2014, per @masnRoch
    * @z_clark1 gets it. Big time.

    Stuck in the Middle

    The Orioles have been in first or second place for 20 of the 26 days in the month of May. This past week, however, the Bird’s have been stuck smack dab in the middle: third place. Coming into today’s game, the Orioles are in third place at 2.5 games out to the Blue Jays?!

    The Orioles have been playing .500 baseball with series splits versus the Royals, Pirates, and Indians since May 15th. However, the way they have gone about it has been all over the place.

    Potpourri

    Our favorite Alex Trebeck returns for a run through this week in Birdland. This week:

    *
    The Legend Continues

    * There can be only one
    * A hot mess
    * Democracy inaction
    * Get off my lawn
    * Let’s Have a Quickie speed round

    Fantasy Boss

    Scott widens his lead to 5-3. Nelson Cruz swung like a madman (SwStrk% 10.3), whereas Caleb Joseph managed to do ONE thing right (SwStrk% 3.7).
    Scott’s category for this week is K/BB ratio. Jake went with Zach Britton, and Scott chose Preston Guilmet.

  • Episode 78: Beanball
    Leading Off
    After another banner week for the Baltimore Orioles, Bird’s Eye View starts up with unbridled positivity.
    Or not.
    After running through the Drink of the Week, and a quick look at the Medical Wing, it’s on to the TWotT:

    * The genius of Earl Weaver, c/o @EutawStReport
    * A listener calls us out for falling down on the job (thanks to @MaurerFTW)
    * It’s hard out there for a Tweep, by @BalSportsReport
    * Chris Davis Conspiracy Theories from @JoPaPa
    * Thoughts on contracts, per @BrooksBaseball

    Decisions, Decisions

    The Orioles are hanging around the top of the pack in the (weakened) AL East, but many fans still have serious concerns – some with the manager. Buck Showalter has come under fire for a number of key decisions this season, as well as his overall approach when it comes to loyalty to “his guys” (and corresponding lineup and bullpen construction).
    The guys talk through the critique of Buck. Of course the man is not above reproach, however, fans have to be careful not to talk out of their… well, perhaps we could keep in mind that we fans don’t have the full details when we judge the wisdom of the manager, GM, etc. Fire away, Birdland!

    Power Outtage

    The Orioles’ lineup is more “itty bitty living space” than “infinite cosmic power” these days. The Birds aren’t getting it done offensively, which is absolutely crazy, considering the talents on the ballclub. Scott breaks down the numbers, comparing 2014 to the past two seasons, in terms of ISO (isolated power). For a team that struggles to walk, to maintain high OBP, and to manufacture runs, a power outtage can be crippling.
    Just ask Bud Norris.
    The discussion included a breakdown of Chris Davis’ swing, and mentioned Jonah Keri’s great Grantland article from last year on the subject.
    Then it was on to Adam Jones, with a discussion of his ISO and AVG charts, care of  BrooksBaseball.

    Fantasy Boss

    Scott brought this one home, so he made an unusual musical choice. Last week’s category was number of walks, and Scott’s pick Chris Davis (5) out-walked Jake’s pick Nick Markakis (2). That puts Shock Jock ahead at 4-3.
    His category for this week is SwStk%, or swinging strike percentage. After some confusion as to whether they were trying to pick players with the best or worst SwStk%, they settled on the worst – because, well… that’s what we do. Jake went with Caleb Joseph, and Scott chose Nelson Cruz.

  • Episode 77: Orange and Black Widows
    Leading Off
    So, totally, for no reason at all, we start this episode by telling you how to find Bird’s Eye View on Stitcher, DoubleTwist, Miro, and a number of other sources for podcasts. You know, just in case you should need to know some day.
    The guys take their usual trip through the Medical Wing, and Drink of the Week, before entering the TWotT:

    * Scott gets a new name, care of @EutawStReport
    * A bit of perspective, from @OsSunglassGuy
    * Critical error, as reported by @LuchadORIOLES
    * Awesome Orioles t-shirt, reported by @EddieInTheYard
    * Distraction in the seats, with @EutawStReport

    Orange and Black Widows

    Jake and Scott occasionally bring in experts to augment their own lack of insight and baseless opinion. Guests on Bird’s Eye View are experts in their field, whose perspective can be counted upon to entertain and educate.
    The guests on Episode 77 are always right – hands down.

    Catch Us If You Can

    Whether due to a roster crunch, or legitimate health concern, Matt Wieters was unable to avoid a stint on the disabled list. While he’s out, the pitching staff will be led by Pride of Pigtown, and #TeamSteve captain, Steve Clevenger – assisted by minor league non-prospect Caleb Joseph.
    Rumors have been swirling that the Orioles are interested in acquiring a backup catcher, and have been dangling Troy Patton. Regardless of the specifics, it’s pretty clear that the Orioles would like to improve depth at the catcher position, and limit the fall-off while Wieters is out.
    The guys run through the Wieters saga, and discuss potential catchers “out there.”

    Fantasy Boss

    This is weird. Jake won, and no one expected it. Scott selected first pitch strike percentage, and Jake’s pick (Miguel Gonzalez) bested Scott’s pick (Darren O’Day). That ties Fantasy Boss 2014 at 3-3. You can cut the tension in SD Studios with a knife. No, not that kind of tension.
    This week, Jake’s category is simple: number of walks. Scott went with X and Jake took Y.

  • Episode 76: Not in Nottingham
    Leading Off
    Welcome to Episode 76, where we are fankly unsure whether we should be positive or negative, regarding the Orioles last 7 games. Going 4-3 over that span, the O’s managed to have some really deflating losses. After sweeping the single-admission double header vs. the Pirates, the Birds went to Minnesota and squandered the opportunity to get healthy on a struggling Twins ballclub. To ease our troubles minds, we take a look at the Medical Wing and then the TWotT:

    * Robinson Cano’s ironic return to the Bronx (w/ @KiethOlberman and @scratchbomb)
    * Steve Pearce redux (@FakeOrioleBird)
    * Bird’s Eye View as #Orioles game log? (thanks to @ChrissyTaylor74)
    * State of the AL East, (from @jay_jaffe)
    * Ben freaking McDonald (c/o @realbenmcdonald)

    Guess Who’s Back?

    No, we’re not talking about Steve Pearce, it’s Manny Machado. The much anticipated return of The Young Machado has been a mixed bag. Whereas there’s little question (or is there?!) as to his defensive presence, Machado is clearly not “all the way” back offensively. He’s struggling at the plate, all while holding down the #2 hole in the linuep. The guys discuss whether being moved down in the lineup would help Machado, and what an appropriate work load would look like.

    Bullpen Taxation

    Here, we talk a little taxed bullpen. Buck Showalter made some uncharacteristically straight-forward comments during his post-game interview on Sunday. As direct s he gets, Buck called out the offense for not hitting, and the starters for not going deep enough into games. He insinuated that changes were coming, and like any good podcasters, the guys try to guess what that might mean. Will a reliever be added to the roster? Who might make a good addition to the rotation? What’s left in the minors? These questions are raised, but only time will provide the answer.

    Fantasy Boss

    Scott wins – asterisk free. Last week’s category was RBI, and his pick (Nelson Cruz) grossly out performed Jake’s pick, Adam Jones. Nelson Cruz tried to put the team squarely on his shoulders, and clobbered the ball.
    For next week’s challenge, Scott selected percentage of first pitch strikes. Jake (foolishly) picked Miguel Gonzalez, and Scott went with Darren O’Day.

  • Episode 75: Oblique Road Show
    Leading Off
    Episode 75 hits on a rainy, Orioles off-day. We hate it – rainy days and off-days always get us down. After a disappointing series with the Kansas City Royals (which makes us wonder if the Sunday plan is cursed again), an the O’s will take it to the Pirates and Twins in the upcoming week. We take a quick trip through the Medical Wing (spoiler alert: there’s some talk about Chris Davis’ oblique injury), then it’s on the TWotT:

    * Wrigley Field Turns 100 (w/ @jonmorosi)
    * Orioles license plates screw early adopters (courtesy of @Orioles)
    * New challenge system, with @roarfrom34
    * New Yankees Rule? Reactions from @jonmorosi
    * Transfer rule is dead, per @Ken_Rosenthal

    Bullpen

    The guys walk through the week’s bullpen performance, and specifically look at the contributions of T.J. MacFarland. The former molestacher put in a clutch appearance, before being optioned back to AAA, and deserves credit for saving the bullpen. Otherwise, it’s been an up-and-down season for the relievers. Jake and Scott talk through the personnel (inculding Troy Patton, who is set to return from suspension), and who might be the best fit for the ‘pen. The discussion takes into account the “right” mix of lefties vs. righties, and who from the rotation is best suited for relief.

    In Praise of Matt Wieters

    I don’t know if you’ve heard, but Matt Wieters is pretty good at baseball. Just ask 2009 Orioles fans. That promise may be being realized here in 2014, as the left-handed Matty Backstop has finally put on a show. Jake asks whether the lack in balance between his (unusual) splits has to do with lack of adjustment, or simply a small sample size. Scott mocks, per usual.

    Fantasy Boss

    Jake wins, but it’s time for Scott to pull out the asterisk. Technically, Jake’s pick (Chris Davis) beat out Scott’s (Adam Jones). Concerns over the value of RC27 in terms of small sample sizes makes for a disagreement over the validity of the win.
    In the interest of fairness, Jake returns to his roots, and goes to the ‘back of the baseball card’ stat RBI for this week’s Fantasy Boss.
    Scott takes Nelson Cruz and Jake selects Adam Jones.

  • Episode 74: Pass the Mylanta
    Leading Off
    Episode 74 comes on the heels of the Orioles squeaking out a win in Boston on Patriots’ Day. After running through the Drink of the Week and a quick visit to the Medical Wing, it’s on to the TWotT:

    * Weird Scheduling with @EutawStReport
    * Showing Tillman some love with @OsUncensored
    * Another edition of Can’t Predict Ball with @EatMoreEsskay
    * Notes on Adam Jones that SHOULD have made Twitter
    * Fun with Ascots (and Jake can’t remember who was brilliant about it)
    * The Fenway Effect with @bmorons

    Team Steve

    Steve Meleski joins the guys to make some sense out of the Boston series and the early portion of the season in general. Steve weighs in on Chris Davis’ struggles, Jonathan Schoop’s learning curve, Kevin Gausman’s pitch count in AAA, and more!

    B’more Strong

    The four game series in Boston was a roller coaster ride of emotion, as the Orioles split the series with the Red Sox. After blowing a huge lead on Sunday night, and nearly doing the same on Monday, the O’s run like hell for the Canadian border. What can we take from this series, and what does it tell us about the makeup of the club? The guys do their best to sound insightful as they review the long “weekend” that was, and spend some time hating on ESPN.

    Fantasy Boss

    Despite the fact that Scott picked one of those wacky sabermetric statistics, Jake pulled out the victory and is this week’s Fantasy Boss. Jake picked Nelson Cruz, and Scott went with Matt Wieters. Cruz had a higher wOBA (.403) than Wieters (.325).
    In  response, Jake goes farther off the back of the baseball card this week, selecting RC27. Runs Created per 27 Outs takes player’s Runs Created and divides by the number of outs he made, and multiplies by 27.
    Scott takes Adam Jones and Jake selects Chris Davis.

  • Episode 73: Say, Say, Say
    Leading Off
    This week’s episode begins where the last weekend left off: the Orioles are still stuck in neutral, but they seem to be getting away with it, as no one from the AL East seems to have separated themselves from the pack. After running through the Medical Wing, it’s time for a look at the TWotT:

    * MLB likes MLB Replay
    * Old Home Week: Washed Up Pitcher Edition
    * Welcoming the New-rrutia
    * Pine-tar-da
    * Vin Scully talks crack pipes
    * Gold Glove Ball Girl

    Come Out Swinging

    As the Orioles’ offense struggles in the early goings, Scott breaks out the stats to show exactly where the Birds fall in the majors, when it comes to offensive output. Beyond the bottom line, our resident stathead examines how the O’s have done with swinging at pitches in/out of the zone, getting the 3-o counts, and BABIP on the fist pitch. Needless to say, Scott tries to make sense of chaos, and Jake mocks the proceedings.

    Say, Say, Say

    Adam Jones drew attention with his strong opinions on fans tresspassing on the field (for more on that, be sure to check out this week’s Double Play), and Masahiro Tanaka. The guys debate Jones’ style vs. the substance of his opinions, and discuss the value/risks of players who speak their mind.

    Fantasy Boss

    Last week’s selection was OBP. Jake picked Nick Markakis and Scott picked Crush Davis.

    Nick Markakis: .286 OBP
    Chris Davis: .370 OBP

    Scott goes up 2-0. Is the rout on?

    This week we are going to go with wOBA which is calculated via the following formula:
    wOBA = (0.691×uBB + 0.722×HBP + 0.884×1B + 1.257×2B + 1.593×3B +
    2.058×HR) / (AB + BB – IBB + SF + HBP)

  • Episode 72: Day Games
    Leading Off
    The baseball season has officially begun! There are real games to discuss, and quite a lot has happened. The guys open the podcast with an invitation for you to let us know how much you hate the new-look website. Send hate mail to [email protected] – that’s where we’re getting the rest of it. After a quick jaunt through The Drink of the Week and the Medical Wing, it’s on to see what happened TWotT:

    * Prime Game ticket pricing
    * Red Sox complain about pace of game
    * IHJJR is misguided on the condiment race
    * Games in April / Games in September
    * Can we stop saying “Jeffrey Maier?”

    Top of the Rotation to You

    Before the season, we agreed that the real wild card for the Orioles’ success would be the starting rotation. We needed the top of the rotation to be strong and the back of the rotation to be serviceable. Once through the rotation was not pretty.

    Chris Tillman: 5.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K,
    Ubaldo Jimenez: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 6 K
    Wei-Yin Chen: 5.2 IP, 12 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
    Miguel Gonzalez: 3.1 IP, 9 H, 7 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
    Bud Norris: 5.0 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

    It certainly didn’t help that the offense took a siesta until the 9th inning in most games, and the margin of error was very thin. But once through the rotation, you can see the reason why many national “experts” picked the Orioles to finish last in the AL East – this is the team’s Achilles Heel.

    The guys discuss the similarities/differences between Start #1 and Start #2 for Chris Tillman and Ubaldo Jimenez.

    Things We Said Today

    It’s early in the season, and there is literally nothing we can talk about that can’t be countered with the “small sample size” argument. But… THIS IS ALL WE HAVE! What else are we supposed to factor into the discussion? A team is never as bad as it looks during a losing streak, and never as good during a winning streak. After a 2-4 start, you can say plenty about the 2014 Orioles. Then again, the guys go through a list of some things you can’t say. Not yet. Not this early.

    Fantasy Boss

    Last week’s category was NP. This may get contentious.

    The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

    Who had a great week? Who had a tough week? Who made us ashamed to be Orioles fans? Find out in this week’s GB&U. The guys run through their Good, Bad, and Ugly for the week. Be sure to drop us a line and send us yours.

    Blowing the Save
    Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.
