Hello everyone, and welcome back to the BITEsize Paediatric podcast!
This season is hosted by Yasmin (BDS3) and Chloe (BDS2) - dental students from the University of Manchester.
This episode is 1/2 of our cleft lip/palate series.
Today we are joined by Dr Jeanette Mooney at the Regional Cleft Network (based at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital). Dr Mooney qualified as a dental therapist in 1980. She has gained many post qualifications including oral health promotion, conscious sedation and a PhD examining provision oral health programmes for parents of children born with a cleft.
In this episode, we cover a range of questions:
- What is cleft lip/palate?
- When does treatment start for cleft patients?
- How and when do these patients access a general dentist?
- What errors can GDPs make?
- What is the role of the GDP in cleft patient management?
- Is oral hygiene more challenging for these patients?
This episode is ideal for those dental students or dental practitioners looking to optimise their care for patients with cleft lip/palate.
Stay tuned for EP3 where we talk to an Dr. Bronkhorst - a specialist orthodontist involved in the treatment of cleft dental anomalies!
