annalise fonza, Ph.D., is a former United Methodist Church clergywoman. As a pastor under Episcopal appointment, she formerly served six congregations in three different states. In 2003, upon realizing that her religious/theological beliefs had changed, she officially returned her credential to the Illinois Great Rivers Annual Conference and walked away from a professional career in local church ministry.
Though difficult at times, she has never once looked back and lives a life happily without a belief in God or any supernatural beings. In her personal and professional life, annalise is also a womanist. Her research and writing interests are in U.S. planning history and theory; community and economic development, particularly as it concerns non-white communities; and black women's activism. In addition,
Dr. fonza is an alumnus member of The Clergy Project, and she is active with Black Nonbelievers.
