Welcome to the Black Girl Garden!
In this community, Black girls and women can come together to heal, grow, learn, and love. I'm your host, Melody, and I am excited to share my experiences and insights with you. Remember, I am not a therapist, but I hope that my stories and thoughts can help at least one of you out there.
In Today's Episode:
- We dive into the topic of grief, exploring its definition, the stages of grief, and how to support someone who is grieving. Grief is a deeply personal experience, and it's important to acknowledge and respect your own journey.
Weekly Quote:
- “People rush to get rid of grief because they see it as hanging onto loss. But grief is really hanging onto love–which is why you always feel it.” –Riri
Segment 1: Understanding Grief
- Grief is defined as “Pain of mind arising from misfortune, significant personal loss, misconduct of oneself or others. Essentially, grief means sorrow or sadness.”
- We discuss the various reasons people grieve and affirm that no loss is too big or too small. Your feelings are valid, and you have every right to grieve.
Segment 2: The Stages of Grief
- Research shows there are five stages of grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. Each stage is crucial in the healing process, and there's no right order in which to experience them. Surrounding yourself with a supportive community and seeking professional help when necessary is essential.
Personal Insight/Story:
- I share my personal journey with grief after losing my mother to cancer in 2019. From denial to depression, and finally to acceptance, I discuss how my friends and support system played a vital role in my healing process. Remember, there's no time limit on healing, and it's important to do the work to move forward.
Conclusion:
- This episode provides a general overview of grief, but we'll dive deeper into this topic in future episodes. I hope you found today's discussion insightful and thought-provoking.
