In 1907, as Oklahoma was becoming a state, the Dawes Allotment Act divided Indigenous land among natives and formerly enslaved Black people. Each member of the Rector family received land, including 10-year-old Sarah Rector, who would soon become the richest Black woman in America.
In May 2020, Jay conversed with author and economic scholar Dr. Boyce Watkins to put Sarah Rector's story in context for the 21st century and reveal its lessons of liberation and freedom.

The air was thick with tension. Police lined the back of the auditorium, daring her to sing the first note. “Southern trees bear a strange fruit,” she sang before all Hell broke loose. Here’s the history behind Billie Holiday’s most dangerous song.

Today's History Story: Top Lies About Twerking
We’re wrapping up our incredible conversation with Reverend Dr. Courtney Alma Bryant about erotic defiance and body reclamation.
Erotic defiance is a powerful form of resistance and self-expression. Those brave enough to reclaim their bodies from racist and sexist constraints reap the liberating rewards that come with celebrating their desires without apology and living authentically in a world that often tries to dictate what is acceptable.
In Part One last week, we explored historical figures and contemporary voices who broke the mold. Now, we’re ramping it up with a candid conversation that technically occurred after last week’s interview. But since the mics were still hot, and the exchange was so damn good, we had to release this Part Two that dives a bit deeper and gets a bit more real.

To the North lay freedom, or so many believed. Starvation, exposure to the elements, and especially the threat of recapture still hung heavy over the heads of those who had escaped bondage. But what about escaping even further south?

Bass filling our ears, bodies dancing to new sounds. Words clipped from the documents that oppressed us, making them our own. The broken patterns of soft, colorful fabric. Our culture is synonymous with experimental creativity. Here are three examples of how.

Learning your history makes you - and your people - stronger.
As Black people, we know we’re often left out of the history books. That media images are skewed. That we need access to experts, information, and ideas so we can uplift our community.
The Black History Year feed connects you to the history, thinkers, and activists that are usually excluded from mainstream conversations, through must-hear interviews and 2-Minute Black History stories. You might not agree with everything you hear, but we’re always working toward one goal: uniting for the best interests of Black people worldwide.
BHY is produced by PushBlack, the nation’s largest non-profit Black media organization - contact us at BlackHistoryYear.com.
