Black in the Garden

On Episode 2 of season 2  Colah is celebrating World Nekkid Gardening Day (just take her word for it) and encouraging us to use our gifts for good!  We're joined by our podcousin, Christin Riddick, host of the Afro Beets podcast. Chris is a D.C. native who started gardening as a service project that turned into a personal challenge and transition to a plant based lifestyle. We discuss how Chris was influenced by Botanical Brotha, Ron Finley (aka the Gangsta Gardener) as a testament to how representation matters.

We learn how Afro Beets Podcast aims to bridge communities like planty creatives and foodie creatives and MORE. Colah and Chris get hype about relevant titles from black authors like Michael Twitty and Leah Penniman in consideration of a Black in the Garden book club. At the end of the day, we hope you at least remember to massage and marinate your kale!

Brother.earthh, the Botanical Brotha, Brayan discusses how plants were an integral part of his transition from Puerto Rico to New Jersey. We learn how plant shops aren’t necessary in Puerto Rico because of the rich biodiversity on every corner. He lies about his houseplant count yet keeps it beautifully transparent about culture shock and coming to terms with queerness as a teen in  New Jersey. Colah and Brayan attempt to dismantle patriarchy as it relates to the disconnect between appreciating nature and perceived masculinity. Spoiler alert: it’s hard out here for a femme!

.

.

#costagate lead to the very significant revelation about tropical biodiversity as it relates to our Blackety black history. Shout out to Blackmenwithgardens for bringing that to the forefront! Colah and Brayan get into the impact of #costagate on the black plant community, scoff at white privilege and celebrate the dope contributions of Africa’s biodiversity to our collective houseplant collections. Somebody tell Karen that her ZZ plant is African!

Ayyyeee! Episode 13 is paying homage to Freedom Farmer, Fannie Lou Hamer, with a special guest from Mother's Finest Urban Farm, Samantha Foxx.  Colah B Tawkin opens with a lesson straight outta 'For Freedom's Sake: The Life of Fannie Lou Hamer' by Chana Kai Lee. It was called Freedom Farm but it certainly wasn't free! Colah chopped it up with contemporary urban farmer, Samantha Foxx about the true cost of farm labor and legacy building as a grown ass woman. We understand how entrepreneurship = making something out of nothing and are encouraged to advocate for our health at the Dr's office and in the garden via holistic healing. Samantha shares the impact that Fannie Lou Hamer's work has had on her in part 1 of 2 this week on Black in the Garden.

Join us on Part 1 of 2 (Episode 11) for a discussion on George Washington Carver to kick off Black History Month TwennyTWENN! We're not here for the peanut lessons you learned in school either. Colah B Tawkin has a convo with modern day Botanical Brotha and crazy botanist, Derek. We get rap with Derek and come to learn a bit about Carver's influence on him because representation matters. Part 1 of our conversation gets into Carver's 'straight out of a Toni Morrison novel' origin story, how G. Dubb C saved the economy of the south and you guessed it: academic discriminatory shade.  To be continued...

It's episode 10 and we're observing the Kwanzaa Principle of Ujima to pay respect to Kobe Bryant's memory and legacy. No one has the 'right' words to say and Colah doesn't pretend to have any of them.  With the sads of collective grief Colah B Tawkin gets introspective and shares a lesson from observing her Alocasia  Regal Shield in bloom.  As much as we're encouraged to bloom, glow up and evolve let us remember to be patient with ourselves during our times of dormancy and loss.
