Phrases like “you don’t really act like a black guy” to “do you get sunburnt?” to even seemingly innocent ones like assuming Ryan loves fried chicken and watermelon. Some of these could be classified as “Microaggressions,” and others as forms of “othering.” 

Regardless, we hope this episode shows you the importance of language in our churches. What we say matters, and that especially matters in terms of race in our churches.

On this episode, Ryan and C.V. introduce the podcast to the world. "Black in White Church" is a podcast centering around Ryan's black and C.V's white experience in white church. This podcast is fundamentally a conversation, not a sermon. Neither Ryan nor C.V. claim to have all the answers, but their experiences and studies might shine some light on the current reality of Black people in White Churches.

Ryan is a High School Pastor at RMCC in Mesa, Arizona. He received his Bachelors of Arts in Christian Studies and a Masters of Science and Leadership from Grand Canyon University, as well as a Masters of Arts coming from Phoenix Seminary in the near future.

C.V. received his Bachelor's of Arts in Biblical Studies and Theology from Biola University as well as a Masters of Arts in Preaching and Pastoral Ministry plus a Masters of Arts in Pastoral Care and Counseling. He is currently helping lead a house church in his neighborhood.
