Black Man With A Gun

Back story of the National Rifle Association

"Man on the Street" Conversation with Michael J. Woodland

Crimson Trace conversation with Mike Faw

Conversation with Willes Lee, US Army Lt. Col (retired) NRA board member

Trying to start a group discussion and bring in those that feel that the NRA has missed the boat.  To do that I am going to show my “hand”.  I am a life member of the NRA and have been around some key characters like Forrest Gump.  Going to share some history of folks like Neal Knox, Joe Tartaro, John Aquilino, Harlon Carter, Tanya Metaksa, and Wayne LaPierre.  I have a conversation with friend and NRA board member (I support for reelection) Willis Lee.  But before all of that Michael shares his “man on the street” observations and perceptions with me.  Interview with Crimson Trace’s Michael Faw.

Long show. over an hour.

'Twas The Night Before Duck Season and all through the land,
not a waterfowler is sleeping, nobody can.

The decoys are washed and the shotguns are ready,
but most folks just hope that their dogs will be steady.

And I in my Gore-Tex thinsulate cap
had just settled down for I hoped a short nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter
the dog sprang from my lap (UGH!) so see what was the matter.

Away to the kitchen she flew like a flash.
Tore a hole through the screen and barked through the gash.

The moonlight glistening off the freshly fallen dew
allowed me to tell it was some one I knew.

It was my hunting partner who drove my dog so insane
and he whistled, he shouted, he called her by name.

From the door of the truck to the walk up the steps
and with a great clunk into the kitchen they crept.

He was a great big camouflaged neoprene elf
and I laughed when I saw him in spite of myself.

We spoke not a word but went straight to our work.
Loaded dogs, decoys and big-wheeled garden carts.

As he cinched the last strap he turned with a jerk and thrusting an arm
down deep in his pants
he said, "thought I'd forgotten my stamps"

As dry leaves before the hurricane fly,
well that describes our early morning ride.

We arrived at the marsh long before it was light
and a lone whistle from above let me know things would be right.

We stood at the tailgate and talked for a while.
About dogs, decoy patterns and calling styles

But then it was time to go our separate ways
as he was hunting the long blind, about a half mile away.

But I heard him exclaim as he walked out of sight
"Good luck one and all, hunt safe and hunt right".

Happy Holidays.

This week I got stuck in 1941. There were a lot of unusually gruesome events that happened that year that the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.

It’s another tragic thing to talk about, live through, watch and mourn but a black man with a gun was killed by a police officer in Illinois.  As a Second Amendment advocate and civil rights activist I am unfortunately in a familiar place.  Yes, I have been here before.  Questioned by friends, and scolded by enemies.  A life was lost and no solution seems worthy.  A mother lost her son, a church lost its keyboardist member, the divide between law enforcement and the community stays wide.  After the obvious bloviating, pontifications and generalities, what?

Racism.  Fear.  Perceptions. Poor Training.  Poor Hiring. Evil.

Some will blame the gun, race and the police.  The blame game, nor politics will bring Jemel back.  I am praying for our nation.  We haven’t overcome.  We haven’t achieved

"...Let us not wallow in the valley of despair. I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the TRUE MEANING OF ITS CREED. 'WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF-EVIDENT THAT ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL' -- Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
