Bart De Waele begon zijn professionele carrière als bankier. Na tien jaar besefte hij dat dit niet zijn toekomst was. Hij zette de sprong naar de digitale sector en richtte Netlash op, een bedrijf dat websites ontwikkelde voor kmo’s. Hij schaalde het bedrijf op tot een team van zo’n twintig medewerkers. Rond 2010 werd duidelijk dat het bouwen van een website op zich niet meer volstond. De nieuwe uitdaging was om kwalitatieve trafiek naar die websites te brengen. Dit leidde tot een fusie met Bseen van Marnik D’Hoore, en samen legden ze de fundamenten voor een nieuw digital agency: Wijs.
Deze groeisprong bracht de nodige uitdagingen met zich mee, want het team verdubbelde plots naar 45 mensen en zowel de doelstellingen als het type klanten evolueerden. Bart zette door en bouwde een sterk managementteam uit. Kort daarna stapte de Cronos Groep aan boord, maar anderhalf jaar later scheidden hun wegen toen de visies op de verdere groei van Wijs uiteenliepen.
Bart zette vervolgens twee strategische overnames in gang om Wijs te transformeren tot een full-service marketingbureau, Duke&Grace, dat op zijn hoogtepunt zo’n 100 medewerkers telde en een omzet van 12 miljoen euro behaalde. Uiteindelijk besloot Bart het bedrijf te verkopen aan de Springbok Groep.
Als jonge kerel van 18 jaar kwam Martin Niemiec naar België om hier bij zijn tante en oom te werken. Slechts 1 jaar later startte Martin zijn eerste bedrijfje in de schoonmaaksector, welke hij later overliet aan zijn vennoot om in een nieuw schoonmaakbedrijf te stappen met zijn toenmalige vriendin. Een relatiebreuk bracht Martin in 2016 op straat met welgeteld 20 euro op zak. Zijn bedrijf was hij kwijt. Hij vond de ondernemersdrive terug en startte nog in datzelfde jaar een nieuw schoonmaakbedrijf met de naam ICM Belgium. Initieel startte hij ICM Belgium met zijn oom, daarna bouwde hij het verder uit met zijn nieuwe levenspartner. Vandaag is ICM Belgium een bedrijf met 80 medewerkers in loondienst en onderaanneming. Dit snelle groeiparcours bracht ICM Belgium enkele jaren geleden in een moeilijke financiële positie met een negatief eigen vermogen. Toen Martin daarbovenop ook nog eens ziek werd, verplichtte dit hem zijn toekomst te herdenken. Hij nam een CFO in dienst en maakte in anderhalf jaar tijd zijn onderneming terug gezond, waarna hij besloot het bedrijf te verkopen.
Lorenz Bogaert zette zijn eerste stappen als ondernemer in de prille Vlaamse online wereld. Deze reis bracht hem uiteindelijk tot de oprichting van Netlog, een sociaal mediaplatform avant la lettre, dat na verschillende investeringsrondes transformeerde tot het online datingplatform Twoo. Lorenz leidde zijn bedrijf door woelige periodes en grote marktverschuivingen, waarna het werd verkocht aan Meetic, onderdeel van de Amerikaanse Match Group. Hij bleef nog een tijd aan boord en kreeg intussen heel wat nieuwe opportuniteiten op zijn pad. Zo investeerde hij onder andere in succesverhalen als Realo of Bizzy. Zijn traject bracht hem uiteindelijk bij de oprichting van Early-stage VC-fonds Pitchdrive en StarApps, een venture builder waarmee hij investeert in nieuwe start-ups.
Als kind zag Toon de fabriek van BOSS paints dagelijks
Toon maakte deze keuze toen hij in het familiebedrijf begon als salesmanager. Al snel wisselde hij van rol om zich te richten op de succesvolle transformatie van de colora verfwinkels. Het bedrijf startte deze winkels om een eigen retailkanaal te creëren als antwoord op een veranderende markt, maar in essentie bleef het een fabrikant van verf die daarnaast ook verf verkocht. Colora moest groeien en evolueren naar een zelfstandige entiteit met een eigen DNA. Om dit te realiseren en op te schalen, koos colora resoluut voor een franchise-strategie.
In deze aflevering spreekt Toon over zijn eigen traject in het familiebedrijf, de uitdagingen waarmee het bedrijf de afgelopen 25 jaar te maken kreeg én geeft hij een kijk in de toekomstvisie voor BOSS paints en colora, dat zich nu klaar maakt voor de overdracht aan de vierde generatie van de familie.
Matthias Haeck van Nougat Vital nam de mantel op als CEO in het familiebedrijf van zijn echtgenote Veronique (derde generatie). Zij koos er bewust voor om niet actief mee te werken in het bedrijf en haar functie op te nemen als eigenaar en investeerder, terwijl Matthias de operationele leiding nam over het familiebedrijf en zichzelf de hoed opzet van de ondernemer. Deze duidelijke splitsing in mandaten is misschien minder alledaags maar werkt ook na 30 jaar nog perfect voor het gehuwde koppel. In al die tijd loodste Matthias het familiebedrijf richting haar 100-jarig bestaan. Niet zonder slag of stoot. Op een cruciaal kantelpunt schrapte hij 70% van het aanbod en 50 van de 55 exportlanden. Die hernieuwde focus verzekerde de toekomst van het bedrijf.
Kurt Goossens begon zijn carrière als rechercheur en teamchef bij de Federale Gerechtelijke Politie. Na 16 jaar jagen op criminelen in binnen- en buitenland, sprong hij met die ervaring in het ondernemerschap en richtte hij 2 bedrijven op. Een marketing agency en een coworkingspace. Hij liep aan tegen én verlegde zijn grenzen. Na 5 jaar echter, was het voor Kurt heel duidelijk. Veel van zijn gesprekken met klanten gingen veel dieper dan de marketing. Leiderschap en het perspectief veranderen van mensen werd opnieuw de rode draad in het verhaal van Kurt. Hij besloot na 5 jaar zijn bedrijven over te laten en koos resoluut voor het najagen van zijn grote passie. Hij startte een nieuw bedrijf onder de naam Wolves and Warriors waarmee hij intussen al bijna 10 jaar leiderschapstrainingen verzorgt met een avontuurlijk kantje voor ondernemers en ondernemende mensen. Maak je klaar voor een crimineel boeiend ondernemersverhaal doorspekt met leiderschapsinzichten.
Kristoffer Van Saet (37) startte 10 jaar geleden Van Saet Security, na een periode te hebben meegewerkt in het elektriciteitsinstallatiebedrijf van zijn vader. De ondernemingsdrang was voor Kristoffer te sterk om te weerstaan. Met Van Saet Security kon hij zijn eigen onderneming opbouwen, terwijl het bedrijf een complementair aanbod naar de markt bracht, naast dat van zijn vader. Van Saet Security groeide snel en daarom kwam Matthias, de broer van Kristoffer, aan boord om de operationele kant van het bedrijf verder uit te bouwen. Kort daarna namen de twee broers het bedrijf van hun vader over, die vandaag de dag nog steeds actief is bij Van Saet Security.
In 2021 besloot Kristoffer te diversifiëren en richtte samen
Een tweede overname volgde snel met de acquisitie van JM Security. Kristoffer koestert verdere ambities om de groep op korte termijn te versterken via een buy-and-build strategie. Voorheen was hij totaal niet vertrouwd met bedrijfsovernames (M&A), maar op korte tijd heeft hij zich hierin bekwaamd. Dit heeft een enorme impact gehad op zijn visie op ondernemerschap.
Een boeiend gesprek over ondernemen, operationeel loslaten en de eerste belangrijke stappen in groeien via overnames.
Inge Geerdens groeide op in een tijd waarin het credo
Inge’s eerste bedrijf, Executive Research was actief in de selectie- en wervingswereld en ontwikkelde daarnaast ook een eigen softwaretool. Na enkele jaren besefte Inge dat een service en een softwaretool in één bedrijf niet houdbaar bleef. Zij splitste de activiteit af onder een tweede bedrijf met de naam CVWarehouse en om zich volledig te kunnen focussen op haar softwaretool verkocht zij enkele jaren later haar rekruteringsbedrijf, welgeteld één week voor de val van Lehman Brothers. Inge had net financiering opgehaald voor de verdere ontwikkeling en lancering van haar software en plots viel haar markt weg. Zij lanceerde een oplossing voor rekrutering in een tijd waarin niemand aanwierf. Timing is everything. De komende jaren waren heftig, maar in ware combatstijl en al kruipend door de modder wist zij haar bedrijf door deze crisisperiode heen te loodsen. Wat volgde is een duurzaam groeiparcours op eigen kracht en kapitaal. Want zoals het spreekwoord zegt: ‘banken geven een paraplu als de zon schijnt en pakken hem terug af wanneer het regent’. Vandaag wordt CVWarehouse gebruikt in 20 landen en heeft het bedrijf kantoren in Antwerpen, New York en Lissabon.
Sofie Anthony groeide op in het gezin van een zelfstandig
Tom Cobbaert schreef zijn thesis over geothermie tijdens zijn studieperiode. Direct na het behalen van zijn diploma kwam hij terug in contact met zijn voormalige thesis-mentor en besloten ze om samen Eco Heating op te richten. Intussen bouwen de vennoten al 20 jaar succesvol aan hun sterk groeiende kmo. De sleutel tot dit succes vormt het eerste onderwerp van ons gesprek. Met waardevolle ondernemerslessen onderweg is het bedrijf gegroeid tot een bedrijf met ongeveer 30 medewerkers. Tom nam vervolgens het besluit om enkele overnames te realiseren, met als doel van Eco Heating een groep te maken met een stevige regionale positie. Hij bespreekt onder andere de menselijke dynamiek die onvermijdelijk enorme veranderingen ondergaat tijdens zo'n groeitraject, evenals de lessen die ze hebben geleerd tijdens het overnameproces van verschillende regionale bedrijven.
