Ephesians chapter 2 explains salvation to us and let's us see that it's not by our good works that we are saved but by the grace of God through Jesus we are forgiven and made a new. And because it is so it means that we who have been shown God's mercy need to show mercy to those we know that are still in the world and need salvation so that they can be saved.
