October 09, 2020 Episode 168: Reanimated V | RE-ANIMATOR
We finally tackle the namesake of our Reanimated series as we take a look at Re-Animator, the 1985 horror black comedy from Stuart Gordon that took H.P. Lovecraft's original idea and gorified it up. We talk about the history of Lovecraft's works, the comedy elements that work in the film, the depths of scientific madness, Barbara Crampton (!!!), and of course the special effects. We're also drinking Contra Brewing's Deerslayer Blonde Ale!

October 02, 2020 Episode 167: Reanimated IV | 28 DAYS LATER
This time, we're talking things that aren't quite reanimated; in 28 Days Later, the film borrows a lot from zombie films but technically its threat aren't zombies but rage-infected humans. We discuss the nuances of that decision, what inspirations the film has and what it also inspired, the effect of the early-00s filmmaking techniques, and a whole lot more. We're also drinking Mean Max Brew Works' Strawberry Creamsicle Ale.

September 25, 2020 Episode 166: Reanimated III | RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD
Our zombie film coverage continues on with Reanimated Part III featuring Return of the Living Dead. Something of a parody of the zombie genre, Return of the Living Dead features an almost metacritical look at zombies while also redefining the genre with its undead's insistence on eating brains. We talk about the gore, the punks!, the great performance from Clu Gulager, and a lot more!
Oh yeah, we're drinking Brown's Brewing Company's #VOTE, a sensible choice for National Voter Registration Day. Make sure you vote, people.

September 18, 2020 Episode 165: Reanimated II | ZOMBIE
Continuing our Halloween Reanimated series, we take a look at Lucio Fulci's Zombie, another one of the zombie genre's defining films. And we watched it using Blue Underground's 4K UHD release, so you know we were able to appreciate every facet of its imagery. We talk about the famous scenes - eye-gouging, shark-fighting - as well as break down the influences to the film, its gore, pacing and plotting, and a whole lot more! Horror aficionados will be horrified at Martin's rating and never listen to us again.
We've also got Zero Gravity's Oktoberfest and Genesee Brewing's Dry-Hopped Cream Ale on the show.

September 08, 2020 Episode 164: Reanimated I | DAWN OF THE DEAD (2004)
We're back! We're kicking off our Halloween season with Reanimated, a series of films focusing on zombies and/or close relations to zombies, and the first in that series is Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead! We're talking the storyline, the fast-moving zombies, Ty Burrell in a non-Phil Dunphy roll, the relation to Land of the Dead, and more! Also, we have Founders' Oktoberfest on the show.

March 13, 2020 Episode 163: St. Patty's Day Special | LEPRECHAUN IN THE HOOD
It's another St. Patrick's Day and that means another Blood and Black Rum Podcast episode on the Leprechaun series. This time we're up to Leprechaun 5: Leprechaun in the Hood. Ryne was sort of dreading this episode having seen the film before, and we actually struggle with what to talk about about this truly bad movie. However, we do manage to conjure up an hour of discussion about the song "Lep in the Hood," the blaxploitation references, Ice-T doing what Ice-T does best, and more!
We're also drinking Goose Island's Lost Palate IPA on this show.

February 28, 2020 Episode 162: PARASITE
We've been talking about doing this episode and we finally got to it - Parasite, the Best Picture winner from director/writer Bong Joon-Ho about rich and poor, upper and lower class, and everything in between. This is a complex film from its story to cinematography, and we try to break down our favorite elements from it as much as possible. There's a lot to dissect, so it's best to watch the film and then listen to our show right after.

February 14, 2020 Episode 161: Valentine's Day Special | VALENTINE
We wanted to make sure we tackled Valentine's Day with a special episode, and since we've already done My Bloody Valentine we decided the next best thing is 2001's Valentine, a slasher film that utilizes the classic holiday themes of '80s horror films with a lot of homage to those movies. We talk about the killer, the gore, the red herrings, and a whole lot more in this special romantic episode of the podcast. We've also got Dogfish Head's American Beauty Hazy Ripple IPA on the show!

February 08, 2020 Episode 160: CHILD'S PLAY (2019)
We said we'd do the 2019 Child's Play at some point after we were unable to cover it during its release due to the theater's projector issues, and here we are! Only a few months late. However, we were particularly surprised by this reimagining of Chucky the killer doll, who is transformed into an uncanny valley-style smartbot rather than a voodoo serial killer. While we admit the themes are sort of on-the-nose, this Child's Play is decidedly entertaining and, for the most part, just a lot of fun.
We're also drinking Stillwater Artisanal's Shoegaze farmhouse-style pale ale!

January 24, 2020 Episode 159: MARRIAGE STORY
We're going in a bit of a different direction with this episode. Instead of tackling gruesome horror, we're dealing with sobering real-life tension with the melancholy and overtly realistic divorce tale Marriage Story. We were thrilled by this Noah Baumbach drama, especially with Adam Driver's performance. We talk about the overall themes of the film, how it relates to Baumbach's similar previous film The Squid and the Whale, and a whole lot more.
