Blvck Canvas Podcast

This week we unpack the unnecessary drama surrounding Jamie Fox and allegations of anti-semitism, plus the recent news of Lizzo being sued by her ex-dancers claiming a 'hostile working environment' and 'fat shaming'. As you can imagine, we're asking the usual question...is everyone OK? We also round up the episode with a brief chat about the much-anticipated part two of Carlos King's interview with reality TV legend NeNe Leakes.

In the Spotlight: Adjani Salmon and his new comedy series, Dreaming Whilst Black, available on iPlayer.

This week, we decided to dedicate the entire episode to the one, and only NeNe Leakes! In particular, her interview with TV producer Carlos King on his podcast. We thoroughly enjoyed the entertaining interview as much as we enjoyed talking about it, and we can’t wait to watch part 2!

This week we had a very reflective conversation about the UK's collective apathy when it comes to activism and climate change. Why are people clutching pearls and feeling 'conflicted' over orange confetti being thrown on George Osborn at his wedding when he's part of the reason why we're in this economic mess? We also discuss Keke Palmer's boyfriend's nonsensical tweets about her attire at a recent Usher concert. Boy, have several seats!

This week we fancied a laugh, so we decided to dedicate this week's episode to all the messy goings on in pop culture. First, we started off with Davido's wandering willy, resulting in getting two women pregnant. Unfortunately, non of them were his wife. Then, we cackled at 31-year-old 'Gary' having a meltdown because his parents downsized their home, including his room - no home training caught in 4K! Plus, the legendary Naomi Campbell's questionable collaboration with Pretty Little Thing - how tragic.

Special Shout out to Gracy, who was probably filming her older brother 'Gary' from the bottom of the stairs. You're the real MVP this week!

Wow, so much nonsense has happened in the space of a week, but we couldn't start without recognising the 75th anniversary of the HMT Empire Windrush, which carried 800 West Indian passengers from the Caribbean to the UK on the 22nd of June 1948. But what about the mess, you ask? Well, we couldn't ignore the recent revelations of the Partygate scandal, including a leaked video of Conservative MPs breaking their own Covid restrictions by having the most unseasoned party of 2020. Then, we unpacked the folly of the rich; the Titan submersible and its unfortunate demise, killing all five passengers, on its journey to explore the wreckage of the Titanic. What is this obsession with a boat that sank over 100 years ago...is everyone OK?

Wow, we've been gone for a hot minute, but we're back! And, of course, this dusty Island didn't disappoint in giving us a smorgasbord of nonsense to talk about while we were away. This week, we get our heads around the pomp, pageantry and PR performance surrounding Phillip Schofield and his alleged grooming allegations. Then we, begrudgingly, dived into the unnecessary discourse surrounding Disney's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid before unpacking the media reaction to TikTok prankster, Mizzy. Seriously, how did we get here? To end on a positive note, we talked about the FOMO we experienced from watching DLT Malta vicariously through social media. Honestly, you all really enjoyed - we love to see it!

This week, it's just us mums. We're joined by content creator, and friend of the show, Rose Annor, to unpack the joys and challenges of motherhood and why it's important to have honest conversations about the realities of mum life. Plus, we have a frank discussion about the hat fitting ceremony and ask why people are happy to wave flags for a billionaire when they've only got -£1.50 on their electric meter.

We've covered a lot of heavy topics over the past few weeks, and quite frankly it was starting to get us down. So this week, we decided to dedicate episode 11 to Joy. After all, "make sure you take the time to centre joy" is a common refrain ya'll hear from us on the podcast, so it's about time we took a healthy dose of our own medicine. From writing poetry and centering stillness to connecting to culture through food and language, we open up and talk about what we do to centre joy in our lives and why it's important for Black people in the UK to do the same.

In the Spotlight: Black Joy, a collection of short stories edited by Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff and Timi Sotire

If you'd asked us before 2020 if Diane Abbott, of all people, would be suspended from the Labour Party for racist views, we would have laughed in your face and gone about our business. But alas, once again, Britain has shown us that she really isn't that girl. We take a deep dive into the mess that was Auntie Diane's letter, in response to Tomiwa Owolade's article about the complexities of race, and Tomiwa's subsequent response, which amplified the racist pile on towards Diane Abbott on social media. Was he wrong to reply? Should he have just gone outside to touch grass? Was his response rooted in anti-Blackness?

Spoiler alert...yes! And we'll explain why.

We took another lovely break for the Easter Bank Holiday (because rest is a radical act) and guess what? That's right, we came back to more mess. This time, in the form of Andrew Edwards, Pembrokeshire County Conservative party councillor, and his racist comments about Black people that leaked online last week. Yet another sign that what?...Britain is shit! Plus we discuss the sad news of Gal-Dem's decision to close and why it's important to support community-driven platforms with your coins as well as online engagement.
