  • How to manage Virtual Teams
Today’s episode of Boardrooms and Bedrooms is a SuperPower Secrets Session on Managing Virtual Teams.

These sessions are dedicated to giving you the ‘How tos’ for the challenges and problems, as well as the solutions, triggered by our conversations with the couples in business who come on this show and share each week.

Our aim is offer you lessons based on the experience of others on the same journey as you — the strategies that we share are all tried and tested. They are built through the work we do inside the Institute for Couples in Business, as well as our personal experience.

Today, Ed and I discussing Virtual Teams. More specifically, the pros and cons of this solution; how you can set things up from the start to ensure success; and how you can improve your current set up.

We definitely have the first-hand experience on this one, having led a wholly virtual team for the past five years.  But we’re excited to share what we know has worked for our clients inside The PowerHouse and for our business peers.

The challenges we will discuss today were triggered by my conversation with The 2 Bowmans - Steven and Chutisa Bowman, who shared their secrets for growing their global brand.

You can catch that conversation here: http://www.instituteforcouplesinbusiness.com/podcast-steven-chutisa-bowman/

That discussion also covered the impact of our team players on our business outcomes which led me to today’s topic about how to manage your team across time zones.

In today’s episode, Ed and I open the doors on:

Why most couples are reluctant to expand, virtually
The most common reason virtual teams fail
The Military Secret that keeps our clients’ - and our - teams marching to the same beat
The importance of alignment to creating a Virtual Team that works
The top 3 ways to ensure your team delivers results, regardless of whether they are in the same room, building, country or otherwise.

A special thank you to our mate Joe Hanlon for leaving us a 5-star review on our iTunes page. We always love hearing your reviews, but I really feel the love when our mates go and record and share their views.  Joe says the podcast, is delivered by a “Top Class Husband and Wife Team”:

“I’ve known Ed and Bec for many years. They’re passionate about people and one of the most genuine couples I know who are dedicated to passing on and sharing their knowledge and experiences with others.”

Thank you so much for taking the time to feedback Joe. I considered not reading out your review because you are our friend, but then I was just really feeling the love and wanted to make a public note of gratitude for tuning in and supporting us. Thank you!

  • Building a Conscious Business
Today’s guests are global entrepreneurs in the truest sense of the term, with team and business in every continent of the globe — except for Antarctica.

Steven and Chutisa Bowman are global business advisors, authors, and speakers who have spent the past 30+ years working with many top companies and entrepreneurs of our time.

Married for 43 years, the Bowmans have both worked as senior executives, CEOs and on boards inside Australia and the United States. But as you’ll hear today, it’s the business journey that they decided to go on 15 years ago - together - which has really changed their lives.

This pair run 7 different brands in what they refer to as global businesses, including consultancy companies, as well as antique jewelry, beanies and knitwear, and an Italian Castle. Yes, you heard that right, a CASTLE.

While that might make some listener’s heads spin, this dynamic duo prefers to look upon their diverse portfolio as a romantic interlude that they get paid for. And while this conversation ventures into spiritual realms, the message is actually simple: You can achieve what you want and decide that you want to achieve.

In today’s episode, we talk about:

    - The energy of a business and the two big questions you can ask every day to get the most out of it while boosting energy for yourself

    - What happens to your people when you step into creating Power Teams instead of Staff

    - How there is no place for just one of you to wear the pants in your ‘together business’

    - Why Chutisa actions and addresses, immediately, those things that wake her up in the middle of the night

    - How tapping into the energy of the Universe will change the way you make your decisions.

    We love reviews!

Thanks to everyone who has been leaving us comments over on iTunes and our Facebook pages.  And if you haven’t done so, PLEASE do! We read every piece of feedback. It helps us to continue to serve you better.

A special mention to SamBam for leaving us a 5-star review and this comment about the podcast he says is full of VALUE Bombs for Couples in Business:

“I’ve been in business for over 20 years with my partner, and it’s awesome hearing there are other couples out there going through the same kinds of things. Super helpful and valuable.”

Thanks for taking the time to feedback SamBam. One of the hardest things about being in business with your loved one is you can so often feel like you’re alone. Creating a community of people that help you feel less isolated is one of the key reasons we started this podcast. I’m so happy that you can take new information and feel connected.

  • Creating true capacity

Today, Ed and I are talking about one of the biggest stumbling blocks for any business person: Capacity. By that, I mean, the ACTUAL amount of time you have to do something with.
This is a topic very close to my heart and one I have worked closely with women on through my female leadership course EmpowHERment and in one-to-one situations for the past 3 years.
But, after working alongside my husband and seeing hundreds of business people through the PowerHouse and The Business League over the years, it is a problem men can suffer deeply from too.  And so, when it comes to a couple’s capacity – throwing kids and the relationship time into the mix as well – things can get exacerbated and a little more complex.
The challenges we will discuss today were triggered by my conversation with Mr. and Mrs. UberKate: Kate Sutton and Adam Simpson who explained how their businesses have grown around what is best for their family. And more so, how they created their own roles and direction based on what they were actually willing to give to the business. You can catch that episode here: http://www.instituteforcouplesinbusiness.com/podcast-kate-sutton-adam-simpson/
In this episode Ed and I discuss:

The 2 defining criteria of True Capacity.
How to know if you are operating outside of it.
Symptoms you will see, feel, suffer if you don’t get real with your time.
My 3-step formula for getting your output to match the reality of your time capabilities.
Ed’s #1 secret for growing the capacity of your business.

Soooo many of us are family-based businesses, husbands, and wives, couples in business. So useful to so many and I can’t wait to share and discuss ideas further with those in my network.”

  • Working to your TRUE capacity
The problem is not that you can’t fit it all in. The problem is that you think that you can.
Working to your True Capacity is the #1 biggest issue that I see in stressed women.
When you Lead a Home and Lead a business – and throw in leading a husband inside that – there is ONLY so much time in a day.
Your SELF before children had …
    – more SELF time
    – more FREE time
    – more NETWORKING time
    – more BUILDING time
    – more IMPLEMENTING time
There was time to plan AND execute in the same day.
And there still IS time to do this on some days … but the pressure for those days to be EVERY day is killing you.
Thinking that your NOW self can achieve the same results as your THEN self is what’s hurting you …
    It’s RIGID.
    It’s INFLEXIBLE.
    It’s UNREAL.
Give yourself a f^*king break. Get real with what’s achievable.
    Be kind to yourself.
Then, make the most of the minutes that you do have with the Vision, Desire and Commitment that moves your Feminine nature.
    Don’t be Disciplined and Accountable.
    Have Desire and Be Committed.

  • The joy behind the jewellery with Mr and Mrs UberKate

What would your business look like if you stopped making decisions based on what a market demands, or a number in a bank balance, and instead, made your biggest decision criteria: “What is best next move for our family?”
Would that make you go faster, slower, or just enjoy the process more?
That’s always been the driver for today’s smart, funny and about-to-be global operators, Kate Sutton and Adam Simpson (otherwise known as Mr. and Mrs. UberKate!).
When jewelry company UberKate launched off the back of a few bottles of wine in a suburban house in Sydney in 2003, no one had any idea that it would evolve to redefine an industry, inspire other couples from around the world and provide such friendly remuneration for their efforts.
That 15-year journey has seen them advised by lawyers to take on one of the globe’s biggest transport companies, follow a strategy that had them pausing on expansion until it was right, and an understanding that joy, love, and presence have been the true keys to making it.
These two were SO fun to chat with and through the laughs, also managed to hit home some very tangible tactics.
In this episode we chat about:

How the launch of transport company Uber has helped their Sydney-based company
Why the business absorbed Adam and how he has contributed to UberKate’s success
The dirty leadership tactics that Kate employed during Adam’s first performance appraisal
Adam’s cheeky nickname that completely and beautifully complements his role playing back stage to his wife’s talent
The power of presence and its role in dealing with pre-school aged children
How their direction and vision has always been dictated by the needs of their family
Why that $30 an hour fiddly admin task is holding you back
And why generosity, respect, kindness, and love are the cornerstones of a good together business.

I was personally moved by Kate and Adam’s stories which remind me that there is light at the end of the tunnel even on the days when everything feels just too much.  And in those hard days when my small children are begging at my feet and the world is also after me, there is nothing more important than that moment.

  • How to choose and implement the right opportunities

I am super excited to have you here with Ed and I for today’s SuperPower Secrets Session: Opportunities Everywhere: Which one do we choose and how do we implement?
Our SS Sessions are dedicated to giving you the ‘How tos’ for the challenges and problems, as well as the solutions, triggered by our conversations with the couples in business who come on this show and share each week.  Our aim is make your life easier through the experiential learning of others. Mainly from us as we have tried and tested all the strategies we share.
These sessions are short bite-size hacks that turn the conversations in to real, tangible solutions for you.
They are built through the work we do inside the Institute for Couples in Business, as well as our own personal experiences – of which, after almost 10 years, there are plenty!
Today, Ed and I are talking about the challenges of opportunities for your business. And more to the point, how you guys can make sure you act together on the right opportunities and how to implement them well.
This is a topic we have first-hand experience in … and I know from our time working with other couples and serving hundreds of business people through the PowerHouse and The Business League, we are not alone.  And, neither are you.
The challenges we will discuss today were triggered by my conversation with Amy and Jamie Honey, in which two topics stood out.
The first was about dealing with a person who thinks and acts quickly whilst one of the partners is more deliberate, cautious and makes sure all the ducks are lined up.
The second was the difficulty in too many opportunities coming in for the business and jumping on all or too many of them.
Click here to catch that conversation.
For now, we’re going to spend the next 15 minutes sharing with you:

The challenges of having a ‘fast-acting partner’ and a ‘lets take it slow and steady’ partner
A tip that will make this difference in styles, 10-times easier to manage
The impact of too many opportunities
The 4-step process that we use with our clients to make sure you only act on the RIGHT opportunities

Before we get in to that, I want to say thanks to everyone who has been leaving us comments over on iTunes and our Facebook pages — and if you haven’t done so, PLEASE do!
Take a snapshot of this episode and post it to the socials with the #boardroomsandbedrooms, or tag us @edwardandrebeccaplant.  Let us know what you loved and why. It helps us to continue to serve you better.
A special mention to BC Gold Coast for leaving us a 5-star review and this comment about the podcast they say, is LESS about Marriage and More about Relationships:
“What I have loved most about Boardrooms and Bedrooms is that not only have the lessons learnt allowed me to connect with my partner around subjects like Finances, KPIs and vision for my business. But, it knocks on to more than just my main relationship.  They say this is a podcast for couples in business. In my opinion, this and INCREDIBLE podcast about ‘RELATIONSHIPS’, and how to best turn up in those relationships, whether it’s with my staff, my peers or my family.”
Thanks for taking the time to feed back BC from the GC. We reckon that the material we create is about making better humans.  And, I’m so happy to hear that’s how you feel too!

  • Communicate to create harmony

Hello there and welcome back to the Boardrooms and Bedrooms podcast.
It’s Rebecca here and I’m excited to have you joining us for today’s episode.
Our conversation today is with Amy and Jamie Honey – who live in Vegas and love a good Dare. To me, sounds like THE perfect blend of my 20-year-old self …  But in reality, is absolutely nothing like the work they do, which is about creating a life full of alignment.
Her styles is chaotic, with a motto of Ready, Fire, Aim.
His approach is detailed and well-thought out.
But somehow, this blended Aussie-American couple have created a life for themselves that has them working together harmoniously, supporting others to set goals and see them through.
They spend a lot of time apart travelling for work, but say that knowing each other’s strengths and ways of BEING helps them to stay connected and intimate even when they don’t speak for days.  In their 12 years together, they say that honesty, communication and self awareness has been the cornerstone of keeping their love alive – and also everything they teach to others.
They seem to operate at a pretty faced pace – and to come from incredibly opposite ways of being – but it all seems to work. Maybe you can relate to that? I know we can.
In today’s episode, we talk about:

What stops your actions aligning with what you say you want
Why Assumptions are the mother of all stuff-ups for relationships
How being clear on what they are good at has been the secret to Amy and Jamie’s profit
Why working from the recliner might be annoying for you, but if the results equal productivity and happiness to your partner, it must be respected and honoured
Why ‘Letting Go’ is the biggest lesson of Jamie’s business career
How they stay connected, even when they don’t speak for days or are in different time zones.

    Shout-out to our Reviewers
Thanks to everyone who has been leaving us comments over on iTunes and our Facebook pages.  A special mention to Nicky Natural for leaving us a 5-star review and this comment about the podcast she says, has Awesome Content:

  • It can’t be all Business, Business, Business
Welcome back to the Boardrooms and Bedrooms podcast, for today’s SuperPower Secrets Session.

Our SS Sessions are dedicated to giving you the ‘How to's’ for the challenges and problems, as well as the solutions, triggered by our conversations with the couples in business who come on this show and share each week.

These sessions are short bite-size hacks that turn the conversations into real, tangible solutions for you.

They are built through the work we do inside the Institute for Couples in Business, as well as our own personal experiences - of which, after almost 10 years, there are plenty!  And today’s episode, we’re going to spend some time talking about the #1 complaint of couples that prevents them really making cash and keeping their connection.

Today, Ed and I are talking about the all-consuming world of Business, Business, Business. And more to the point, how you guys can stop making everything you do, have, be, be all about that - and create more opportunities to connect back at the level of husband and wife.

This is a topic we have definitely had the first-hand experience in … and I know from our time working with other couples and serving hundreds of business people through the PowerHouse and The Business League, we are not alone.  And, neither are you.

The solutions to changing this are two-fold:

    The way the business operates
    The depth of your connection.
This episode was inspired by my conversation with Wayne and Karen Phillip, who talked about some of their personal habits for switching off.  You can check out that conversation over on the website, www.instituteforcouplesinbusiness.com/podcasts.

For now, we’re going to spend the next 15 minutes sharing with you:
How your different styles of doing work, could also be causing tension outside of the office
What Ed used to do in our early days of working together, to ensure he always had things to talk to me about that were not business related
The one piece of advice that my friend gave me about the early days of business together that shaped the way that reshaped my perspective on the work-love-relationship
The Importance of silence as a connection tool
How you actually deepen your connection to one another, by working harmoniously together.
    Shout-out to our Reviewers

  • Making time for each other

When it comes to doing business, Karen and Wayne Phillip are not on their first rodeo.
In their lives BEFORE they started their now operation Virtual Hypnotherapy, they ran swim schools, pre-school facilities and a face-to-face therapeutic clinic.  Karen worked in the corporate world. And Wayne also spent time as a school teacher.
At first, the world of small business was all a bit crazy for them.  Wayne was just out of the world of education and they were both in a new relationship world, juggling the needs of six children between them … All teenagers. Eek! But as Karen puts it, their decision to ‘uprgrade to one another’ was totally worth it.
Needless to say, they were busy.  And, when the wait list for Karen’s services in clinical hypnotherapy stretched out to months, Wayne saw a gap in the market that would mean they could support more people and leverage Karen’s time.
They seem to have the juggle sorted … but as Wayne tells me, it’s because he lets Karen think she’s the boss.
In today’s episode, we talk about:

The challenges of carving out time for one another in a heavily committed schedule
What happens when you have very different ways of working
The formula they learnt early on that means they stay intimate.

It’s a fun conversation that draws on wisdom and patience, and highlights how beneficial regular honouring of your other half can be.

  • How to Avoid Double-Handling

Welcome back to the Boardrooms and Bedrooms podcast, for today’s SuperPower Secrets Session.
It’s the time we dedicate to giving you the ‘How to’s’ for the challenges and problems, as well as the solutions, which are triggered by our conversations with other couples, like you, who are in business together and who so generously and openly share with us each week on this show.
These sessions are short bite-size hacks that turn the conversations in to real, tangible solutions for you.
They are built through the work we do inside the Institute for Couples in Business, as well as our own personal experiences – of which, after almost 10 years, there are plenty!  And today’s episode, we’re going to look at one of the key factors to making your operation run more smoothly, more quickly if that’s your desire, and with a lot less friction.
Today, we are talking about How to Avoid Double-handling.
There’s two situations where we see the frustrations of double-handling most:
The first is with a couple who are just starting out in their together business and have grown really quickly.
The second is with couples who have been doing it for a long time, but are either transitioning their roles, or bringing on a much larger team.
While these two phases of business are very different, their needs to solve this kind of problem can be brought back to a few key steps.  That’s where we’ll start our discussion today.
This episode was inspired by Dan and Janelle Bridges’s story.  You can check out that conversation on our website, www.instituteforcouplesinbusiness.com/podcasts
For now, we’re dedicating this hack session to sharing with you:

What happens to you (separately and as a couple), your team, and your clients, if double-handling happens too much
The reasons your partner keeps doing this
How to deal with the frustration that comes with this problem, without making the situation more fiery, ie worse
Three things you can do to stop this behaviour in its tracks.
