Boardrooms and Bedrooms – The Podcast for Couples in Business episodes

  • Let’s talk about Sex (your business depends on it)

    Let’s be honest here – talking about things like sex and intimacy can be all a bit uncomfortable for a lot of couples. We get that. But what we also see in our work with couples in business is that the way you relate to one another in the bedroom has big ramifications for how well things go for you in the boardroom (aka your business).
    And that’s why today’s episode of Boardrooms and Bedrooms is so necessary. Vital even!
    Isiah McKimmie is a sexologist and therapist who works with couples who feel more like housemates/co-workers than lovers, those who have drifted apart, and couples for whom sex is a big fat scary elephant in the room whose presence is felt but not mentioned.
    While creating and maintaining intimacy is hard enough for most busy couples, Isiah explains why the challenge is even greater for couples in business who can easily assume that spending lots of time together is enough to nurture that deeper connection. We also delve into the relationship between a power imbalance and sexual desire – this is really interesting to understand – and learn the one thing couples must do to stay on top (pun intended).
    In this episode we chat about:

    Talking about sex for a living.
    The reasons why couples come to Isiah.
    Why intimacy is such a challenge for couples in business.
    Why just spending time together doesn’t create intimacy.
    What couples need to overcome to correct an imbalance.
    Why couples reach out for support.
    Isiah’s message for couples in business who are struggling.
    An example of one couple in business who were at breaking point.
    Why the lack of sex in that relationship was causing the wife so much pain.
    The surprising truth around sex drive in men vs women.
    The real impact of poor connection on your business.
    The simple daily act that helped one couple reconnect.
    Why the tools couples learn in therapy can be better than a vibrator.
    What is a power imbalance and how does it impact your relationship?
    The link between withholding sex and the need for more power.
    Key signs of a power imbalance.
    Isiah’s advice for addressing a power imbalance.
    Choosing the right language to broach sensitive subjects.
    Why making conscious change in your relationship takes strength.
    The need for external support to overcome major challenges.
    The one thing couples in business must do to succeed.

  • Building a business in the midst of adversity

    They say love conquers all, and this week’s episode of Boardrooms and Bedrooms offers up our most inspiring struggle-to-success story on the podcast so far, and a solid lesson for all couples in business.
    In 2015 Tara Baker and Arlia Hassel were enjoying a carefree holiday on Rottnest Island, off the coast of Perth, when a simple accident saw Arlia airlifted to the mainland for life-saving surgery.
    The journey that followed was a challenging one for the couple, who overcame the odds and got engaged 18 months later. Their search for wedding inspiration exposed a massive gap in the market for the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning) community worldwide. Seizing the opportunity, the pair created Dancing With Her, a magazine and blog which celebrate sexually diverse women in love.
    With around one year in the business behind them, Tara and Arlia have a lot to share about how their business has evolved and the challenges they’ve faced during that time. Their story is full of inspiration and a testament to the power of love, perseverance, and patience.
    In this episode we chat about:

    What is Dancing With Her.
    How their business is disrupting the traditional wedding industry space.
    The accident that left Arlia fighting for her life.
    Tara’s experience supporting Arlia alongside her family.
    How Tara felt not knowing if Arlia would even remember her.
    Their conversation about marriage just hours before the accident.
    Arlia’s rehabilitation and her expectations for the future.
    How the accident has changed Arlia.
    Why they started their business.
    What motivates them to persevere, despite the challenges.
    How they have pioneered the LGBTQ+ wedding space globally.
    The process of getting started and how it has evolved.
    Why they choose to limit their print run.
    Their backgrounds prior to going into business together.
    Their message for wedding vendors.
    How they manage the workload and their business relationship.
    The impact of the business on their personal relationship.
    Discovering their strengths and designing their business around that.
    The biggest thing they learned in the first 12 months.
    What they wished they had known at the beginning.

  • Want greater results and impact? Learn to lead better

    Most of you know Edward Plant as co-founder and head coach at the Institute for Couples in Business. Others know him through his work at The Business League. Some of you may also know him as wine lover, doting dad and husband to wife Bec.
    But many may not know much about Ed’s former life (not to be confused with his double life as a Prince Harry look-a-like)…
    Ed served in the Australian Army for 17 years. Having trained as an engineer, he worked his way up to the rank of Major. He was responsible for leading troops in combat and non-combat missions in Iraq, Papua New Guinea, Singapore and Malaysia.
    In 2010 Ed left the army to pursue a vision more closely aligned with his personal values. He began sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience around leadership to support business owners to lead their teams to bigger, sustainable success.
    And in this episode of Boardrooms and Bedrooms, Ed shares the details of what his life looked like back then, and how his opposition to the Army’s brand of leadership inspires the work he does to support couples in business today.

    In this episode we chat about:

    How drastically life has changed since Ed’s Army days.
    The type of projects Ed worked on in the Army and the impacts of those.
    Why the impact of his work with couples in business is more tangible.
    What does ‘leading better’ mean for you?
    How the death of Ed’s dad inspired his own definition of leadership.
    Leadership in business vs leadership in your relationship.
    What leadership looks like in Ed and Bec’s relationship.
    The 3 key areas for Couples in Business to lead better.
    Why is leadership important, especially for partnerships.
    When and how to shut up and speak up.
    Mixing Boardrooms and Bedrooms.
    Ed and Bec’s best-selling book Lead-The-Ship.
    The Framework for Leadership explained in the book.
    Intuitive leadership vs Cookie-Cutter leadership.
    Why the Army’s style of leadership conflicted with Ed’s own style.
    The simple bonding exercise that brought Ed’s team together.
    Why diggers from 20 years ago still stay in touch.
    Understanding your natural Leadership style.
    How your Values influence your personal leadership style.
    What Brene Brown teaches us about leadership.
    Why you need to know your partner’s leadership style.
    The one thing Ed wished he’d known when he started out in business with Bec.

    What their kids are learning from them.
    The 8-year-old orphan who inspired them with his entrepreneurial spirit.

  • Save your marriage and boost business using the power of presence

    Dr Dan Hanson is an internationally recognised expert in dentistry. He specialises in early interceptive treatment of soft tissue dysfunction, breathing dysfunction and malocclusion. Put more simply, he’s passionate about helping children to sleep, breathe, eat and grow well!
    So why am I talking to a dentist on a podcast aimed at supporting couples in business?
    A book that Dan was drawn to back in 2012 led him to discover a men’s group that ignited his passion for self-actualisation. Encouraged by his wife Rachel, they now run retreats for other couples to master the art of presence. Again, put simply: how to stop fighting with yourself and others.
    In this episode we chat about:

    What is ‘Men’s Work’;
    The tribal origins of men’s support networks;
    How Dan discovered the concept of Men’s Groups;
    The childhood patterns that led to his mistrust of men;
    Why Dan set up his own Men’s Group;
    How a Men’s Group programs saved his marriage;
    The signs that his marriage was in crisis;
    Presence and awareness vs reaction and response;
    “Little boy” and “little girl” behaviours;
    How to suggest a support network to someone;
    How Rachel led the way in starting their business;
    Dan and Rachel’s roles and rules;
    The value of setting and respecting boundaries;
    The no-go zones before going to bed.

    Dan’s life-changing work with children;
    What is ‘Men’s Work’;
    The tribal origins of men’s support networks;
