Arm yourself with a pack of Sharpies and a bottle of white nail varnish. After this episode, you’re going to need them.

Carolyn Shearlock keeps on top of things by marking everything – and we mean EVERYTHING – not in a notebook but on the actual machinery and equipment itself. From the direction water flows in pipework to the key temperature settings on her stove, Carolyn’s marked it – permanently!

  • Postcards From Sea – Miami to The Bahamas

Miami to The Bahamas. Finally, John heads out to sea.

Nearly four years ago, in a boatyard in Reedville, Virginia, John Herlig came across a tatty old Rawson sailboat called Ave del Mar. Unable to resist, John bought Ave, and so began an adventure that’s taken him from the hippest neighbourhoods in DC, across the Chesapeake Bay, down the Intra-Coastal Waterway and now, at last, into the Atlantic Ocean.
Along the way, John has developed all manner of new skills and Ave has undergone a painstaking restoration. Together they will circumnavigate the globe although John is keen to point out he has no particular destination in mind.
This is a story of reinvention. This is adventure. This is Boat Radio

  • Ocean Research Project – Solo Atlantic crossing

Mistaken for a cocaine smuggler, boarded by armed guards, interrogated by immigration, his boat searched and his intentions questioned. Perhaps even more frightening was the fact that Matt Rutherford was supposed to be in Iceland but had been diverted to England when Hurricane Bertha and Tropical Storm Cristobal forced him to change his plans. His first single-handed transatlantic passage did not go smoothly.

  • Skipper’s Review – Pam Wall: an intimate portrait

Pam Wall needs almost no introduction. She is to sailing what Susan Sarandon is to acting. Or Jodie Foster. Or Audrey Hepburn. Perhaps a combination of the three.

Pam and husband Andy sailed the world aboard their self-built boats Carronade and Kadarik, beginning with a honeymoon Atlantic crossing. They later added two crew members, children Samantha and Jamie, with whom they circumnavigated the globe, setting out in 1985.
Pam is in demand as a public speaker. Her seminars are sell-outs at boat shows and her training sessions are legendary. We are privileged to welcome her as a guest on Boat Radio.
Pam invited host Sarah O’Kelly into her Florida home. Their chat began as an interview about adventure but became an intimate portrait of a close-knit family whose love and understanding of the sea led them to the furthest corners of the world. This is also the story of Pam Wall’s resilience and fortitude following the loss of her husband and the premature death of her daughter.

  • Postcards From Sea - John Herlig chats to Mark Firestone

This edition comes from Lake Sylvia, Florida, where John chats to Gozzard owner Mark Firestone.

Three years ago, John Herlig bought a tatty, sun-bleached old sailboat called Ave del Mar. Slowly and with great attention to detail, John revived Ave and now they have embarked on a voyage together. There’s no real plan; no particular destination in mind. All we know is that John would like to see the whole world and that someday he might turn up at Boat Radio headquarters in Mallorca.
This is a story about how a chance discovery in a boatyard in Reedville, Virginia led to a new lease of life for both a 1967 Rawson 30' cutter and her former restaurateur owner.
