Israel's defence force will implement a humanitarian pause in several population centres across Gaza as pressure mounts to increase aid — including from Australia's prime minister.

The pause is part of a broader set of measures approved by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Israel has breached international law by blocking the delivery of food aid, but has suggested Australia has no imminent plan to recognise a Palestinian state.
