In this episode, we examine the shadow that had loomed, all of 1995, over the Republican 1996 Presidential Campaign. The potential that the charismatic and popular Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Colin Powell , was about to announce he was going to run for President. He was a towering figure in the minds of the American People having just run and won the Gulf War convincingly.
He embarked on a book tour for his book "My American Journey" and it was a major national best seller. He seemed poised to take the Presidential Primary field by storm. However, what was also true was that Powell never seemed to really want the job nor the political life that came with it. In this episode that is captured as well , plus we get a real sense of all the things coming together at once for Senator Bob Dole as he tries to combat those already on the trail, run the U.S. Senate, fight back against the agenda of President Bill Clinton, and deal with the looming presence of the retired General that would have provided yet one more mountain for him to climb on the way to the nomination in 1996.

Episode 483: BOB DOLE 1995 – Clinton’s Comeback (Part 24)
The Assassination of Yitzhak Rabin – November 4, 1995
On November 4, 1995, one of the most shocking political assassinations of the modern era took place in Tel Aviv.
Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin had just addressed thousands of Israelis gathered at a peace rally supporting the Oslo peace process. Within minutes, he would be shot three times by Yigal Amir, a Jewish Israeli extremist who opposed Rabin's negotiations with the Palestinians. Rabin was rushed to the hospital, but his wounds proved fatal.
In this episode of BOB DOLE 1995 – Clinton’s Comeback, we step away from the American political campaign for a moment to examine the extraordinary events unfolding in the Middle East during the autumn of 1995.
Just two years earlier, Rabin had stood alongside President Bill Clinton and PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat on the White House lawn as the Oslo Accords were signed. For a brief moment, there was hope that decades of conflict between Israelis and Palestinians might finally give way to a lasting peace.
But by 1995, that hope was under enormous strain. Israel was deeply divided over the peace process. Palestinian terrorism was threatening the negotiations, while Jewish extremists inside Israel increasingly portrayed Rabin as betraying his country. Across the Arab world, governments and political movements were reacting to the changing relationship between Israel and the Palestinians.
Then came November 4.
We examine Rabin's extraordinary life—from soldier and military commander to Israeli prime minister and Nobel Peace Prize recipient—and the political circumstances that led to his assassination. We also look at the reaction in Israel, the United States, and around the world, including President Clinton's deeply personal response to the death of a man with whom he had worked closely in pursuit of peace.
And while the assassination occurred thousands of miles from Washington, it was very much part of the world Bill Clinton was navigating as he prepared for the 1996 presidential election. With Bob Dole emerging as the Republican nominee-in-waiting and Clinton fighting his way back politically after the Republican Revolution of 1994, the events of November 1995 were shaping a rapidly changing world.
The assassination of Yitzhak Rabin would change Israel, alter the course of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, and become one of the defining moments of the 1990s.
This is the story of Yitzhak Rabin, the political battle surrounding the Oslo peace process, and the tragic night that changed the Middle East.

President Clinton wrote one of the most misleading opinion pieces in 1995 on the Republican plan on College Loan program. He then sent it out to college campuses all over the country including The Lander University Student Newspaper The Forum. This was my rebuttal.

In this brief episode we let you listen in on the CNN broadcast special from Inside Politics with Bernard Shaw, Judy Woodruff and Political Director William Schneider, as they analyze that first forum from New Hampshire, as it introduced all of the Republican Presidential Candidates to the public.
This will give you a feel for what was actually a strong field of candidates that ran in 1996.

One of my columns from my days in College. This particular column points out something that was just beginning to really show at the the time. It was that moderates in both arties were leaving the Congress. Today that is wing that is barely if not nonexistent in both parties.

Here is the political column that started it all for our host Randal Wallace. It was his guest column to the Lander Forum Student Newspaper in defense of Bob Packwood in the edition that came out just after his resignation.
This column got him added to the student newspaper regular staff and began his rather brief journalism career. It was a lot of fun and one of the happiest times he had during his college days in Greenwood.
Randal Wallace will read the segment about it from his book "Always Vote Your Conscience" , the column from the student paper, the response from one of his college professors Dr. Aaron Tannenbaum, and he will discuss the new feature for our show of bringing back from those days the columns covering this period of events in Politically Speaking - Historical Columns, and we will introduce our new contemporary column and new Substack publication The Randal Wallace Journal that is now available on the Randal Wallace Substack page.
Its something new and something old for all our listeners and readers too. We hope you will enjoy the new feature to our show and our columns from our year at The Lander Forum Student Newspaper in Greenwood S.C.

In part two of the best oral history I have ever heard on any subject Bob Packwood continues to give listeners a tour through how the United Senate works and the issues Senators face from raising money to dealing with national issues and his assessments of the people he worked with from fellow Senators and House members to campaign aids, Labor and business leaders, to the Presidents of both parties he served with throughout his nearly three decades in the United States Senate.
This is well worth the listen for anyone who wants to learn how their government really works behind the scenes.

This is the first of our shows allowing you to hear the oral history for the Dole Institute in Kansas.
In the following two episodes you will hear Bob Packwood discuss his working relationship with Bob Dole. In the process, he will tell great stories from his long career in the Senate, the fights from Vietnam to the budget battles of the Clinton Years. He will asses the various Senate Leaders of both parties he served with from Mike Mansfield to Hugh Scott, to Howard Baker, and he will even discuss some of the quirks of both Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell both of whom he served with before they became Senate Leaders.
You will get a real feel for how the United States Senate works, and how it interacted with the House of Representative, and The Presidency and the men who served in that office from Richard Nixon to Bill Clinton.
This is the best oral history of any I have listened to in all the years I have been listening to them to put these shows together. These two episodes are well worth the listen for anyone interested about learning how their Government actually works.

This is the most recent of our bonus speeches given by Senator Packwood in our series looking back at his career and fall from power. It is another tour of the Federal Budget and assessments of the leaders the country had near the end of the Barak Obama Presidency.
It is an amazing speech and again shows off his sharp and penetrating mind.

We begin our third season on Bob Dole's life and career, by traveling back in time to his April 1995 Presidential Campaign Announcement. At that point the Republican Party was on the rise…
In our third of four seasons, we will look back at Bob Dole's 1995 as he takes off into the Presidential campaign, while also trying to manage Congress. A Congress full of unruly new Republican firebrands in the House under their revolutionary Speaker Newt Gingrich. We will listen as that struggle between the Republican Establishment, the new House Republicans under Gingrich, and the Liberal Democrats in Congress, all converge into a battle for power, all of which allows Bill Clinton to perform one of the most dramatic political comebacks in all of American History.
We invite you to come along with us on a wild ride through the high points and low moments of modern American History, in an effort to show the citizens of today that we are an amazing and resilient nation.
