Psalm 86 gives us a beautiful picture of how we should approach God in prayer—with both boldness and humility. The psalmist confidently cries out to God for mercy, help, and protection, yet he also recognizes his own neediness before the Lord: “Hear me, for I am poor and needy.” As believers, we are invited to come boldly before God because of what Jesus Christ has done for us. Prayer is a privilege made possible through His sacrifice. But even as we come with confidence, we should never lose sight of our dependence on God. We do not approach Him entitled or self-sufficient—we come as children in need of a loving Father. True prayer is rooted in both confidence in God’s goodness and humility about our own need for Him. When we pray with that kind of heart, we experience the mercy, grace, and peace that only God can provide.
