This is the KBBF News bulletin. These are the updates regarding the arrest of Mahmood Khalil. The KBBF News bulletin previously reported about Mahmood Khalil, a U .S. permanent resident and Columbia University student who was arrested by ICE last Saturday without being charged with a crime. A Social media posts by President Trump confirmed that Halil had been arrested and put into deportation proceedings solely due to his political activism in support of Palestine. On Monday, New York federal judge Jesse Furman blocked the deportation and said that Halil is not to be deported unless and until a court says otherwise. Furman also ordered to have Halil sent back to New York City. He is currently in the LaSalle Ice Detention Center in Louisiana. One day before he was arrested, Khalid has sent an email to the Columbia University administration saying, "I haven't been able to sleep, fearing that ice or a dangerous individual might come to my home. I urge you to intervene and provide the necessary protections to prevent further harm."

The Trump administration has arrested and plans to deport Mahmoud Khalil, a permanent U.S. resident and graduate of Columbia University, for his involvement in pro-Palestinian protests. The arrest signals a new level of rights violations in Trump's anti-immigration program, and has been described by legal experts as unprecedented. Via a post on Truth Social, the social media platform created by his company, Trump said he is proud of the arrest, and that it is the "first of many to come." Trump then continues with a list accusations against Khalil as well as the student movement in general. The accusations include being a "paid agitator," supporting Hamas, supporting the slaughter of innocent men, women and children, being pro-terrorist, antisemitic and anti-American. These claims have been repeated about the college protests since they began, but there has never been any evidence to support any of them. On the contrary, the government of Israel has an entire branch dedicated to spreading its propaganda all over the world, and has, by any standard of measure, killed tens of thousands of children in the past 16 months.

Elon Musk has told Republican lawmakers that the mass firings of federal workers that he ordered were not actually ordered by him. When President Trump took office in January, Musk was announced as the head of the new Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, whose initials are derived from an old internet joke. Musk immediately began cutting government programs, personally firing federal employees via email, and sending a group of hackers to the US Treasury to take over their computer system. On February 21st, Musk took the stage at the Conservative Political Action Conference carrying a chainsaw and waved it in the air, saying "this is the chainsaw for bureaucracy." After Musk's firings of federal employees became massively unpopular, Musk told a gathering of Republican lawmakers on Wednesday that the firings were not actually his decision, only suggestions that the department leaders could decide whether to accept.

30 correctional officers at a juvenile prison in California have been indicted for allowing and encouraging fights between children inmates. Attorney General Rob Bonta referred to the fights as "gladiator fights," implying that it provided entertainment to the officers. The investigation began after the Los Angeles Times published a leaked security video showing eight probation officers watching a group of teenagers beating another teenager. The 17-year-old victim suffered a broken nose and brain injury. According to Bonta, officers allowed or encouraged 69 fights among 143 inmates ages 12 to 18. Two officers, Taneha Brooks and Shawn Smyles, are accused of telling other officers not to intervene in the fights or to make any reports. In order to keep the operation secret, Smyles instructed the youth inmates to not seek medical attention for their injuries. The Probation Department refused the state's order to close Los Padrinos, and state board members have said they don't know what legal recourse they have to enforce it.

According to the Washington Post, the Department of Homeland Security instructed the IRS to give them the information of hundreds of thousands of undocumented people last week. The requested information would include the names, home addresses and email addresses of 700,000 people who pay taxes. It is against the law for the IRS to give personal information to other government agencies, and this is presumably why many undocumented people feel safe paying taxes. The IRS said that it denied the request but is investigating how it can negotiate with the Department of Homeland Security to reach an agreement. The agency also requested that the IRS deploy dozens of "highly skilled IRS auditors and criminal investigators" to investigate businesses that hire undocumented people. In the 1970s, president Richard Nixon famously used IRS records to retrieve information about his political enemies, and this one of the reasons he was impeached, though he resigned before the impeachment proceeded.

On Friday, hundreds of thousands of people in Greece protested in the streets during one of the largest one-day strikes in modern history. Two years ago, 57 people died when a passenger train filled with students collided with a freight train, and the event became a symbol of the government's failure to maintain safety and infrastructure. A recent investigation determined that the issues that caused the collision have still not been addressed. On Friday, all international and domestic flights were grounded as air traffic controllers joined seafarers, train drivers, doctors, lawyers and teachers in a 24-hour general strike. In other news, polls show that Donald Trump's approval rating is 15 points below average, making him the most unpopular president since 1953, with the exception of his own approval rating the last time he was president. Many Trump voters are using the hashtag #MAGARegrets on social media to share their regrets, having now experienced the economic effects of Trump's policies.

The children of Gaza are returning to school for the first time in 15 months. Since October of 2023, Israel has killed tens of thousands of children and over 800 teachers, and has physically destroyed 85 percent of all schools in Gaza. Due to the ceasefire agreement which was reached after Joe Biden left office, children are beginning to return to schools. Some classes are being held makeshift schools in the buildings that remain standing, while others are being held outdoors. Latifa Mahmoud Hasan Abu Sherbin, a resident of Gaza, said to the media "After an absence of about a year and a half, we returned to school. The feeling is indescribable, (…) unique and special. (…) However, there is a slight flaw: It's not really a school. First of all, the walls are destroyed. There are no benches, no blackboards. We even brought our prayer mats with us to sit on. (…) There are no teaching materials. (…) Despite all of this, we overcame these conditions."

Israel has delayed the release of hostages that it agreed to freeing as part of ceasefire negotiations. After families waited up to 12 hours in cold and wet weather for their family members, Israel announced it would not be releasing the hostages because Hamas had violated ceasefire agreements by holding demeaning and undignified hostage release ceremonies. On Saturday, an Israeli hostage that was taken by Hamas on October 7th, 2023 smiled, waived at the cheering crowd and kissed two Hamas soldiers on the forehead as he was released from captivity. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that these ceremonies violate the ceasefire agreement. Izzat Al-Rishq, a member of Hamas' political bureau said, The occupation's claim that the (…) ceremony is humiliating is a false claim and a flimsy pretext aimed at evading the agreement's obligations. (…) The Palestinian prisoners are released with their hands tied and blindfolded, and their families are threatened not to hold any celebrations."l

Earlier this week, a funeral was held for an 11-year old girl who died by suicide in Gainesville, Texas after bullies threatened to call ICE to have her parents deported. On February 2nd, Jocelynn Rojo Carranza was found unresponsive by her mother. She was taken to a hospital where she died five days later. Her mother was then informed by investigators that Jocelynn had been bullied at school, specifically about her family's immigration status, and that she had been receiving counseling at school about once a week. Her mother said, "I never knew anything about that. My daughter never showed changes. I mean, there was never anything that gave me a sign that she was suffering from bullying." She also claimed that her daughter's school was aware of the bullying but did not tell her, and she only learned her daughter had been receiving counseling when investigators told her. The investigation has not yet been concluded. The mainstream media has completely ignored the story.
