The Trump administration has accepted 59 Afrikaners as refugees from South Africa, due to false stories of a genocide happening to White South Africans. While the administration aims to deport all Latin American immigrants, it has accepted a group of Afrikaners, descendants of mostly Dutch colonizers of South Africa who were part of the ruling class that maintained the racist state for centuries. In recent years, South Africa has passed new laws in to address the racial inequality that has resulted from hundreds of years of racist slavery, colonization, and apartheid. Today, White people make up less than 10% of the total population of South African, but own 72% of the farmland and about 50% of the total land. Although the new laws have not resulted in any land being taken from White people, racist groups have been circulating rumors about a "genocide" happening to Afrikaners. The US has a history of accepting powerful people who fled their countries when faced with the consequences of their actions, including Nazis after World War II and collaborators of the Batista regime after the Cuban Revolution in 1959.

Last week, the University of San Francisco announced it will stop investing in four
companies that provide weapons to Israel as a result of student protests. The Schools
Endowment Fund will sell off its direct investments in Palantir, Elthru Harris, GE
Aerospace, and RTX Corporation by June 1st, the university confirmed. The four
companies, which provide weapons, technologies, and military intelligence tools to
Israel, had been specifically targeted by student activists. Just days before the
university made its announcement, students occupied the atrium of the university's main
library and renamed it in honor of Hassam Shabbat, a young journalist from Gaza who
was recently killed by Israeli forces. Students have been organizing and protesting on
campus since Israel began its current siege and starvation campaign in Gaza in
October of 2023. At other universities, such as the University of California at Los
Angeles and Columbia University in New York, administrations have collaborated with
local and federal law enforcement to use violence against the peaceful student
protesters, accusing them of being anti -Semitic or being funded by Hamas.
On Wednesday, President Trump announced a ceasefire deal with Ansarallah, the rebel group also known as the Houthis, and in response Israel has begun bombing them. In response to Israel's attempted genocide in Gaza, the Houthis have been attacking Israeli cargo ships in the Red Sea since November of 2023. The Biden administration responded by bombing the Houthis, which the Trump administration continued and has intensified in the past several weeks. However, the bombing has not been able to slow down the attacks on Israeli ships. The Houthis defended themselves against US attacks, but the US military was never their target, and, earlier this week, the Houthis attacked Israel directly. On Wednesday, Trump said, "they don't want to fight anymore (…) and we will honor that and we will stop the bombings, and they have capitulated." Chief Houthi negotiator Mohammed Abdul Salam said that it was the US who backed down, and that the Houthis will no longer attack the US, but that the ceasefire deal does not affect their attacks on Israeli ships. Israel has now begun to bomb the Houthis.
On Tuesday, a federal court ruled to prohibit the Border Patrol from conducting warrantless immigration stops. In January, Border Patrol agents arrested 78 people in Kern County, and only knew the immigration status of one of them. According to the case documents, agents were violently detaining people simply due to their skin color. The ruling requires Border Patrol agents to have a reasonable suspicion, and that the person they are arresting is in violation of U.S. immigration law, and to provide an arrest warrant. Agents are also prohibited from carrying out warrantless arrests unless they have probable cause that the person is likely to escape before a warrant can be obtained. U.S. District Court Judge Jennifer L. Thurston said, "you just can't walk up to people with brown skin and say, 'Give me your papers.'" The ruling applies to the Eastern court district of California, which includes Fresno, Sacramento, Bakersfield, Redding and Yosemite, but civil rights attorneys say that the ruling will set important precedent for implementing the rules in other districts.
Last week, a report by the Israeli news agency Channel 13 revealed that the Biden administration never asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netenyahu to agree to a ceasefire with Hamas. Biden, along with former presidential candidate Kamala Harris and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the three main leaders of the campaign to elect Harris for president in 2024, all said that the administration was "working tirelessly to secure a ceasefire deal." All three of them used the exact words, "working tirelessly." In the new report, former Israeli ambassador, Michael Herzog, said: "God did Israel a favor that Biden was the president during this period. We fought for over a year and the administration never came to us and said, 'ceasefire now.' It never did." Historically, several US presidents have successfully stopped Israeli atrocities by threatening to revoke US support. In 1982, Ronald Reagan told Israeli Prime Minster Manachem Begin to stop committing war crimes in Lebanon, referring to Israel's actions as "a holocaust." The attacks stopped immediately.
Dean Group, a company based in Manchester, England, has told activists that it will no longer work with the Israeli weapons firm Elbit Systems. The activist group Palestine Action disrupts the supply chain for Israel's military by attacking factories and other businesses, with the aim to stop the Israeli genocide of Palestinians. Since 2024, when it was discovered that Dean Group had a business relationship with Elbit, Palestine Action have been breaking into its buildings and damaging machinery. Last week, Palestine Action announced that Dean Group had told them they are now officially refusing any work with Elbit Systems, and will never work with the company in the future. Dean Group is the sixth company that has been forced to stop working with Elbit due to Palestine Action. Last week at the University of Chicago, students hijacked the video projector at a panel discussion with representatives of the weapons company Boeing, and showed footage of Gazan children being bombed. The administration could not turn off the projections and had to cancel the panel discussion.
Several Venezuelan immigrants who were deported from the US have disappeared, and their families have no information about their whereabouts. One of them is 32-year-old Ricardo Prada Vásquez, a delivery driver who was arrested by ICE in late January in Michigan after a traffic stop. Vásquez believed he'd be deported to Venezuela, but his family and friends have not seen or heard from him since mid-March, when the Trump administration took over 200 Venezuelans from the Texas detention center where Vásquez was being held to El Salvador. However, Vásquez is not on the list of the people confirmed to have been sent to El Salvador, and he does not appear in any images released by Salvadoran authorities. The US government has confirmed he has been removed from the country, but his family has no other information about him. The family of 27-year-old Neiyerver Adrian Leon Rengel, also from Venezuela, says he was similarly disappeared after he was taken by ICE last month.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement has signed a $30 million deal with the controversial surveillance tech company Palantir, which will be used to help track and deport immigrants, including people who might have overstayed their visas. A database would also track cases of self-deportation and share data with Customs and Border Protection. The outlet 404 Media reports Palantir has been working in recent weeks to increase ICE's capacity to monitor immigrants with deportation orders. Peter Thiel, the founder of Palantir, is a billionaire whose political writings have influenced Musk, and much of current political climate. In his famous essays such as "The Education of a Libertarian," Thiel argues for replacing democracy with a new system where capitalists use technology to escape all regulation and find a new form of freedom. The new agreement with Palantir is an extension of a contract first signed by the Biden administration.
On Wednesday, federal judge James Boasberg confirmed that certain Trump administration officials will face prosecution if they do not comply with the Supreme Court regarding the deportation of Kilmer Agrego Garcia. Last week, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the Trump administration must return Garcia, a refugee who was mistakenly deported to CECOT, the infamous El Saladorian prison. After President Trump publicly announced he would not be returning Garcia to the US, federal judge Paula Xinis announced that she was considering filing contempt proceedings against Trump. Boasberg said that if Garcia is not returned, those directly involved in defying the Supreme Court order will be prosecuted, and furthermore, any deportation based on the controversial "Alien Enemies Act" will be halted for two weeks. The Trump administration continues to say that Garcia was a gang member, but has provided no evidence, and no criminal charges have been filed against him.
A Jewish civil right group is demanding that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will screen for all forms of hate, not just antisemitism, under a new program that decides who can enter the United States. Last week, the DHS announced it would begin searching the social media of immigrants applying for legal status, and if they find what they consider antisemitic activity, the immigrants application could be denied. This, as well as accusations of antisemitism against anyone who criticizes Israel, is in context of the mass protest movements since October 7th, 2023, which undermine the United States' foreign policy interests. The Jewish Council for Public Affairs, a Jewish civil rights group, has publicly demanded to know whether the searches for hate speech on social media will include all forms of hate speech, not just antisemitism. More than 2 dozen Jewish organizations and synagogues have joined a legal effort to defend students who have been arrested by ICE for their support of Palestine.
