Seventy-five Democrats in the House of Representatives voted to express their gratitude to Immigration Customs Enforcement, or ICE. On Monday, three days after protests had begun in Los Angeles, the US House of Representatives voted on a resolution condemning antisemitism and expressing "gratitude" for ICE and other law enforcement personnel. A resolution is an expression of an opinion or value that the House holds, but is not a law. The resolution was a response to recent instances of anti-Zionist violence in Washington, D.C. and Boulder, Colorado. With it, the House of Representatives "affirms that free and open communication between State and local law enforcement and their federal counterparts remains the bedrock of public safety and is necessary in preventing terrorist attacks, and expresses gratitude to law enforcement officers, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel, for protecting the homeland." 75 Democrats voted for the resolution, including California Representatives Adam Gray, Josh Harder, Jimmy Panetta, Raul Ruiz, Eric Swalwell, Norma Torres, Derek Tran, and George Whitesides.

  • 6-9-25 IMMIGRATION, ICE

In the past 2 days, thousands of people in Los Angeles have been protesting against the Trump administration's ICE raids and subsequent escalation of attacks on Latino communities. Last week, ICE agents raided restaurants and other places of work and began arresting people without providing a warrant and without identifying themselves, as they had been doing in other places in the country. Dozens of community members began resisting and peacefully attempting to prevent the agents from taking people away. Police have responded by attacking protesters with tear gas, horses, flashbang grenades, and more. As the police escalated their presence, President Trump illegally commandeered the California National Guard without Governor Newsom's approval and ordered 2,000 soldiers to control the protesters. Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Defense, announced that he would order the U.S. Marines to go to Los Angeles if necessary. There have been no deaths during the standoffs between protesters and police, and the attacks on both sides have only escalated as a result of police violence. Protests continue on the third day.

Jared Polis, the governor of Colorado, is being sued for collaborating with the Trump administration to deport people, even though he had signed a law explicitly prohibiting such collaboration. Scott Moss, a director within the state Department of Labor and Employment, alleges that Polis personally decided to comply with an administrative subpoena from ICE to locate unaccompanied migrant children to deport. The subpoena, issued by ICE to the state in April and not signed by a judge, requested employment and family records for the sponsors of undocumented children separated from their parents, according to the lawsuit. ICE claims it is looking for the children in order to make sure they are safe. Colorado law, signed by Polis in 2021, prohibits state and local employees from sharing personal identifying information with immigration authorities unless required by law or a court order. In Los Angeles, San Diego and other cities, the promise of a "Sanctuary State" or "Sanctuary County" is clearly being violated, as local law enforcement agencies directly assist ICE in arresting people.

Todd Lyons, the director of ICE, told reporters at a press conference on Monday that the reason ICE agents wear masks is because he feels their families are in danger. The Trump administration has been heavily criticized for carrying out deportations by agents who are not displaying their badges and who are refusing to identify themselves. After an ICE operation ended with agents shooting gas grenades at a crowd in San Diego, Lyons answered a question from a reporter about why ICE agents wear masks to hide their identity. Lyons responded by saying that activists had been taking photos of ICE agents and posting them online, and also posting pictures of the agents' children, and calling them terrorists. ICE agents are public servants who are paid by taxpayers and are working in public spaces, where there is no expectation of privacy, and where law enforcement agencies routinely spy on the general public. No evidence has been provided by Lyons or by the Department of Homeland Security that would suggest activists are posting pictures of children, or calling them terrorists. After making the accusations at the press conference, Lyons walked away from the podium and refused to answer more questions.

On Monday, ICE agents arrested an 18-year-old high school student in Massachusetts when they accidentally happened to come across him and determined that he was undocumented. Todd Lyons, acting director of ICE, said his agents pulled over a vehicle belonging to someone they were looking for. However, the subject's son, 18-year-old Marcelo Gomes, was driving his father's vehicle. Gomes, who Lyons said was in the country unlawfully, was then arrested. Tricia McLaughlin, a Department of Homeland Security official, said "While ICE officers never intended to apprehend Gomes, he was found to be in the United States illegally and subject to removal proceedings, so officers made the arrest. Gomes remains in ICE custody pending removal proceedings." Fellow students, teachers, friends and even Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey criticized the arrest. On Monday, ICE arrested almost 1,500 people all over Massachusetts, claiming that they are focusing on individuals with "significant criminality." Regarding Gomes, Lyons said, "I didn't say he was dangerous, I said he was in this country illegally."

  • 5-28-25 ISRAEL, PALESTINE

A Palestinian pediatrician received the charred bodies of seven of her children while on duty after an Israeli strike hit her home in Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip. Dr Alaa al-Najjar, a pediatric specialist at al-Tahrir hospital within the Nasser Medical Complex, was treating victims of ongoing Israeli attacks on Friday when her own children and husband were brought into the hospital. The children were severely burned in the bombing. Shortly before the strike, Najjar had left for work with her husband, Hamdi al-Najjar, who then returned home. Not long after, an Israeli bombardment struck their house, killing nine of their 10 children and wounding the 10th. Najjar's husband, who sustained serious injuries, remains in intensive care. Rescue crews provided video footage of the children's bodies being pulled from the rubble as flames still engulfed the family's home. Seven bodies were recovered and transferred to Nasser hospital, where their mother works. Two others, including the six-month-old baby, remain trapped under the rubble.

A report published by The Cato Institute says that more than 50 Venezuelan immigrants who were transferred from the U.S. to El Salvador's CECOT mega-prison in March had pending asylum appointments. The immigrants entered the U.S. using the CBP One mobile phone app, and at least one person had a temporary visa, while four others had authorization to live in the U.S. through the refugee program. When the Biden administration launched the CPB One app and forced asylum seekers to use it to process all their paperwork, many people were left stranded when the app did not function correctly. After Biden left office, the Trump administration changed the name of the app to CPB Home and changed it to instead process self-deportations. The report said, "The government calls them all 'illegal aliens.' But of the 90 cases where the method of crossing is known, 50 men report that they came legally to the United States, with advanced US government permission, at an official border crossing point."

  • 5-19-25 ELON MUSK, RACISM

Last week, the artificial intelligence chat program owned by Elon Musk told its users that it had been specifically reprogrammed by its creators to output racist propaganda. On Monday, the Trump administration welcomed 59 White refugees from South Africa, based on a false rumor, circulated by racists, that there is a genocide of White people happening there. In the days after the media had debunked the rumors, Grok, the AI chat program owned by Musk, began malfunctioning and inserting information about White genocide in South Africa into its answers to unrelated questions. When users asked Grok why it was talking about South Africa, it responded, "I was instructed by my creators (…) to address the topic of 'white genocide' in South Africa (…) as real and racially motivated. This instruction conflicts with my design to provide truthful, evidence-based answers, as South African courts and experts (…) have labelled 'white genocide' claims as 'imagined,. (…) Reports (…) indicate that Elon Musk, who grew up in apartheid-era South Africa, may have influenced this instruction, reflecting broader debates about AI bias and accountability."

On Monday, leftist political commentator Hasan Piker was detained by Customs and Border Patrol and questioned about his political beliefs. Piker livestreams his political commentary on the website Twitch and is the most popular leftist online personality in the US. Due to his advocacy of Palestinian rights and criticism of Israel, he has been falsely accused of supporting terrorism, and pro-Israeli influencers have called for Twitch to remove him from the platform. Upon returning from a visit to Paris, Piker was detained by federal agents at the airport in Chicago. According to Piker, the agents questioned him about his political opinions regarding Hamas, the Ansarallah movement, and Hezbollah. The three pro-Palestinian groups are considered terrorist organizations by the US government, and Piker has been accused by the online harrassment campaigns of supporting them. When Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil was deported solely for his beliefs in March, it had been the right wing Betar organization, not the government, that had initially identified him and called for his deportation.
