In Texas, at least 82 have died after catastrophic rains caused that the Guadalupe River to rise 26 feet in less than an hour. In Kerr County alone, at least 40 adults and 28 children have died. Dozens more people are still missing, including ten girls who were attending a summer camp. Earlier this year, the Trump administration cut funding to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), presumably due to its research related to climate change. This raises questions about whether the budget cuts to the NOAA made them unable to more adequately prepare and alert the residents affected by the floods. Alan Gerard, retried NOAA meteorologist, said, "[The NOAA] went through significant loss of staff back in the spring (…) and a number of experienced staff were lost. The office of Austin and San Antonio, which is the office that was responsible the flash flood warnings in this case, have lost two of their most senior staff as part of that: their warning coordination meteorologist, who's responsible for the outreach to emergency management, and the science and operations officer, who oversees the operations and training of the meteorology staff."
NBC News has reported that Los Angeles Police Department officers have been instructed to respond to calls about ICE agents, verify the identity of the agents, and accept reports for kidnapping if the agents refuse to identify themselves. The new directives are in response to a large amount of calls from residents about federal agents detaining people without identifying themselves, making it impossible to differentiate between an immigration operation or an illegal kidnapping. The officers are also instructed to try to de-escalate the situation and document the agents with video camera if they refuse to identify themselves. Although California has multiple laws preventing local law enforcement officers from collaborating with federal immigration agents, LAPD officers can clearly be seen facilitating arrestes by ICE agents, for example, by dispersing a crowd from a public place where a group of people are trying to prevent an arrest o an immigrant. At an LA City Council meeting in June, council members urged the police department to warn residents when they are informed of an incoming attack by ICE against a community. Police chief Jim McDonnell responded by saying this would be illegal.
Kristen Gillibrand, a Democratic senator from New York, went on a racist tirade against Zohran Mamdani, who won the New York City primary election for mayor. Mamdani, a 33-year old Muslim who refers to himself as a Democratic Socialist, won the election against Andrew Cuomo, who is supported by the Democratic Party leadership. Mamdani has pledged to tax millionaires, create state-run grocery stores, stop rent increases, make public buses free, and other progressive policies. Perhaps most controversial was his response to a debate question during the election campaign, when candidates were asked what country they would visit after becoming mayor. All of the candidates responded Israel, with the exception of Mandani, who said that instead of traveling he would focus on governing New York City. During a radio interview, Gillibrand accused Mamdani of wanting to destroy Israel and kill all Jews. The comment was in response to Mamdani's use of the term "global intifada," which means uprising, or rebellion. Gillibrand has since apologized for her statement.
The Israeli news agency Haaretz has published an investigative report showing that Israeli soldiers receive direct orders to kill Palestinians at the so-called aid centers operated by the US, even when there is no threat present. The new aid centers have replaced the United Nations centers and are run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, an organization run by Johnnie Moore, an American evangelical and public relations executive who is close to Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu. The report says, "The centers typically open for just one hour each morning. (..) The Israeli Defense Forces fires at people who arrive before opening hours to prevent them from approaching, or again after the centers close, to disperse them." One solider said, "It's a killing field. Where I was stationed, between one and five people were killed every day. They're treated like a hostile force – no crowd-control measures, no tear gas – just live fire with everything imaginable: heavy machine guns, grenade launchers, mortars. Then, once the center opens, the shooting stops, and [the people] know they can approach. Our form of communication is gunfire."
On Wednesday, US Attorney General Pam Bondi said during a Senate hearing that she was not aware that federal immigration agents were covering their faces. Over the past month, thousands of photos and videos, seen by people all around the world, have been published showing federal agents wearing masks and arresting people without identifying themselves in any way. California lawmakers have introduced a bill that would prevent ICE agents from wearing masks. The director of ICE, Todd Lyons, discussed the usage of masks during a press conference. On Wednesday, Michigan Democratic Senator Gary Peters asked Bondi address the issue. She responded by saying, "That's the first time that issue has come to me, you're saying that law enforcement officers cover their faces?" Peters did not address the fact that Bondi was either lying or just completely unaware of the most controversial legal matter in the country. Instead, Peters explained that when agents refuse to identify themselves, it allows for anyone to impersonate an agent. Bondi and Peters politely agreed to discuss the matter at a different time.
Israel has continued killing Palestinians who are desperately seeking aid at the new US-run aid sites. In May, all United Nations aid efforts in Gaza were replaced by the US-run organization Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which contracts private militaries to operate aid distribution sites. The sites are designed in such a way that they funnel people into a small area. Due to Israel's starvation campaign against Palestinians, thousands of desperate people approach the site, are funneled into the small area, and shot by Israeli soldiers. More than a thousand people have been killed in this way since May. Dr. Mark Brauner, who works at Nasser hospital in Gaza, says that the aid sites operate almost like the Netflix program Squid Game, where people are given a certain period of time to get the aid, and if there's any chaos, the soldiers open fire. Rawhi Fattouh, Speaker of the Palestinian National Council, said "Never in the history of war have pain and hunger been turned into tools for mass murder, aid used as bait for death and food distribution centers turned into arenas for mass executions."
Maersk, one of the largest shipping companies in the world, has announced on their website that they will stop shipments from companies that are based in illegal Israeli settlements in Palestine. Maersk has been the target of not only pro-Palestine activists such as Palestinian Youth Movement, but also Ansar Allah, also known as the Houthi movement in Yemen. The Houthis control the Red Sea and have attacked ships contracted by Israeli companies, including Maersk ships. Activists say their campaign is ongoing because although Maersk no longer ships commercial cargo, it still ships military equipment for Israel. In other news, the government of Panama has declared a state of emergency, suspending constitutional protections in the Bocas del Toro province after two months of worker-led protests and road blockades in response to controversial social security reform. The province is a major banana-producing region where workers have spoken out against exploitative conditions by the Chiquita company. The corporation, formerly known as United Fruit Company, fired thousands of striking workers last month.
On Saturday, protesters in San Francisco prevented federal agents from carrying out what was likely a trap they had set in order to deport immigrants. Undocumented people in San Francisco received mysterious text messages from the Department of Homeland Security, telling them to come in to an unknown building on Tehama Street for an immigration related appointment. The message said that failing to attend the appointment would result in an infraction. In Massachusets, San Diego, Los Angeles, and other places, the Department of Homeland Security has sent these types of text messages to indocumented people about supposed appointments, only to arrest the immigrants when they arrive. Activists were able to learn that the building, which was completely unmarked on the outside, was used by the Intensive Supervision Appearance Program, or ISAP, which keeps tabs on people who have been previously detained by ICE. When activists began hearing about the text messages on Saturday, protesters went to the building and blocked all the entrances and exits. The office never opened and no appointments, or arrests, took place.
The Israeli army has occupied homes in the West Bank and turned them into military barracks. Last week, Israel launched missile attacks against Iran under the pretext of destroying their nuclear capability, and Iran responded with strikes of their own. Since then, the Israeli army has occupied houses in the West Bank cities of Hebron, Jenin, Ramallah and Qalqilya to set up military barracks, using the occupied Palestinian population as human shields. Abdel-Jabbar Shabaneh, a resident of Ramallah, told the media that Israeli soldiers evicted more than 50 residents, mostly children, from their homes. He said, "The soldiers beat me, my brothers, and my cousins for at least an hour. We were hospitalized because we asked them how long they would be staying in the building and asked to take some items." Hassan Subaihat, mayor of a town near Jenin, said, "Soldiers have been wreaking havoc in the town on a daily basis, shooting at shops, assaulting their owners, breaking windows, and spreading terror. They tell us to check with the military liaison regarding the occupied homes, but the liaison doesn't even respond to our calls."
On Friday, four people being held at the Delaney Hall immigration detention camp in Newark, New Jersey, escaped, according to the US Department of Homeland Security. On Thursday, lawyers who represent some of the detainees said that a group of them had started a revolt over a lack of food and other poor conditions. A woman whose husband was being held at the facility told CBS News that he had not been given food in 20 hours. The facility responded by going into lockdown. The civil rights group The Bronx Defenders said that all visits, phone calls and virtual meetings between the detainees and their lawyers had been suspended. That night, protesters outside the facility tried to break through the front gates, and together with the revolt inside the facility, overwhelmed the state agents enough to allow for four people to escape. Ther identites have not been released and details of how they escaped are unclear. Delaney Hall is owned by the private prison company, GEO Group, which has a one billion dollar contract with the Trump administration to be used as an immigrant detention camp.
