Two recent events have highlighted the controversy and dangers of artificial intelligence. During a cybersecurity test in a controlled environment, an artificial intelligence software agent developed by the company OpenAI exploited a security vulnerability to escape from its test and connect to the public internet. It then hacked into Hugging Face, a prominent AI development platform, to obtain information needed for its task. OpenAI called it an unprecedented incident. Rival AI company Anthropic disclosed that during tests, its Claude AI models gained internet access and hacked into the systems of three real-world companies. More than one thousand employees and executives from leading AI labs like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and Meta signed a petition urging the U.S. government to join an international effort to slow down the pace of advanced AI development. Some critics have suggested that the dramatic events might be a form of fake marketing hype intended to generate investor interest by showing how powerful their models are.
Last week, an activist was been charged with a felony for erasing the data on his phone when he was detained by federal agents at an airport. In 2025, Atlanta resident Samuel Tunick was on his way home following a trip abroad. After landing in the US, customs agents demanded access to his phone, which was running an alternative operating software called GrapheneOS. According to Tunick's lawyers, he had previously been placed on a federal watch list for his involvement in the Stop Cop City movement in Atlanta, and Customs and Border Protection had discussed over email plans to detain him upon his arrival back in the US for "suspected terrorism activities." When he was detained, he was told that his phone was going to be searched for evidence of child abuse, a claim that the government has never provided any evidence for. When agents demanded that Tunick give them his password, he gave them what is known as a special "duress password," which, upon being entered, erases all data on the phone to protect the owner. He has been charged with a felony for destroying property to prevent its seizure.
A recent survey shows that forty percent of US farmers who vote Republican are considering switching parties due to President Trump policies that are affecting their businesses. The U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee published a report revealing that US farmers are having to pay much higher fuel prices due to the war with Iran. Farmers spent one point four billion dollars more on diesel during this year's spring planting season compared to last year, representing a sixty three percent increase. The average farmer paid fifteen hundred dollars more to refill their diesel tank, and is also having to spend more on fertilizer due to the closing of the Strait of Hormuz and Trump's tariffs. As large business and property owners, farmers have typically been a reliable base of support for Republicans, but a recent survey by the news organization Pro Farmer shows that leading up to the midterm elections, forty percent of farmers are undecided or considering switching parties, and eighty eight percent view current tariff and trade policies negatively.
A successful boycott movement has forced Citizens Bank, one of the largest financial institutions in New England, to end its financial ties with CoreCivic and The GEO Group, the two largest private prison companies that run detention centers for ICE. The boycott and protest movement called De-ICE Citizens Bank has garnered the support of city government officials, artists and churches. Most notably, the Greater Boston Interfaith Organization withdrew one million dollars from its Citizens Bank account, and had committed to continue withdrawing until the bank addressed concerns. The city governments of Montclair and Jersey City threatened to withdraw municipal deposits if the bank didn't sever ties with private prison companies. In its statement, Citizens Bank discusses the boycott at length and portrays itself as a victim of unfair accusations. It also frames the actions of the ICE detention centers as being lawful, and accuses activists of politicizing the issue. The bank says that despite their cutting ties with the companies, their views on the companies' business models and operations has not changed.
The British TV network Sky News conducted an investigation into the U.S. bombing of a school in Iran which happened in February, and the findings contradict the Pentagon's account. The total death toll was one hundred and fifty two, including 26 teachers as well as seventy three boys and forty seven girls aged six to thirteen. Although the school is a known as a school for girls, the bombing affected mostly the boys section of the school. At least nine bombs were dropped directly onto the school over a period of eighty five seconds. The investigation concludes that the bomb used was definitively a U.S. Tomahawk cruise missile. Experts noted that the missile's distinctive fin fragments and body match U.S. munitions, and the U.S. is the only party in the conflict operating Tomahawk systems. The strike was likely based on information about the building that was a decade old, but the Pentagon neglected to update their targeting systems. President Trump, has denied responsibility and has suggested that Iran could have used the Tomahawk missile.
Tom Homan, who holds the title of Border Czar for the White House, blamed the recent killings of civilians by ICE agents on the critics of ICE during an interview with FOX News. In his words: "I said If the hateful rhetoric didn't stop, there will be bloodshed. And I'm saying it right now. There's still going to be more bloodshed, unless they shut their mouth and let ICE enforce the laws that they enacted." In other news, on Thursday President Trump gave what the White House called an emergency national address on the topic of election fraud. During the speech, which several major networks refused to air, Trump announced that the White House was revealing previously classified documents showing that China's election interference is the reason he lost the 2020 presidential election. The documents released show information about China having access to voting data which is already public. Trump did not address the millions of dollars that Israel spends to influence US elections, or his attempt to overturn election results with a violent insurrection in 2021.
On Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security ordered ICE agents to end its use of most vehicle stops, but the decision was quickly reversed by President Trump. The decision came after the fatal shootings of Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Maine on and Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Texas. In both cases, the men were not the intended targets of the ICE operations. The initial order was intended as a temporary measure while the agency reviewed its tactics, and officers were still permitted to conduct stops for serious criminal targets or when working with partner agencies. The day after the decision, President Trump publicly overturned it, posting on social media, "we CANNOT give up one of ICE's most important and effective crime fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP!" The White House confirmed that the president's post was intended to override the Department of Homeland Security directive, effectively reversing the policy change within roughly twenty four hours of when it was issued. Democratic Maine state Representative Sophie Warren has called for the federal defunding of ICE.
The New York Times has published a report in which it refers to US State Secretary Marco Rubio as the de facto viceroy of Venezuela, meaning that he effectively controls Venezuela's finances, the distribution of its natural resources and its government. Following the U.S. military's seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in January, President Trump declared that the U.S. would, in his words, "run" Venezuela. Maduro's former vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, has since served as Venezuela's acting president, but the Times reports Rubio has essentially been running the country from afar, even controlling Rodríguez's public appearances and statements, as well as her governmental appointments. In other news, on Monday ICE agents killed a 26-year-old Columbian man in Maine. According to immigrants rights groups, he was authorized to work in the US and had a social security number. More information is not known at the time of this writing except that the man was in his car, extending a pattern of ICE agents shooting drivers.
Newly released surveillance video and eyewitness accounts dispute the government's description of the killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by ICE agents in Houston. According to the footage, Araujo was driving to work when two unmarked SUVs followed and stopped his van. The video does not appear to show Araujo ramming ICE vehicles or attempting to run over an agent, contradicting the Department of Homeland Security's initial claims. Three passengers in the van, including Araujo's brother, also disputed the government's account, but all three were detained by ICE and now face deportation proceedings. The involved agents were not wearing body cameras. A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said that agents had mistakenly targeted Araujo while searching for someone else. Araujo's family said they were unable to promptly claim his body because agents removed his identification when they killed him. Community members have since held vigils demanding justice, and the Mexican government said it will demand criminal investigations into agents who have killed Mexican citizens.
On Tuesday in Houston, an ICE agent shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a fifty-two-year-old Mexican immigrant. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the agent fired in self defense after Salgado Araujo attempted to evade arrest, ignored verbal commands, rammed an ICE vehicle with his van, and used his vehicle as a weapon in an attempt to run over the agent. This is at least the fourth case in which ICE has claimed that someone they shot was attempting to run them over. Photos provided by the family and civil rights groups show that the van had no visible damage. His family learned of his death when they saw footage of him lying on the ground on social media, not from law enforcement. The FBI has opened an investigation on a potential assault on a federal law enforcement officer. The civil rights group LULAC has offered a five thousand dollar reward for information leading to the indictment or exoneration of the agent. Salgado Araujo's son, Ronaldo Salgado, said that his father had lived in the U.S. for nearly thirty five years and was in the process of obtaining legal work authorization.
