On Tuesday in Houston, an ICE agent shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a fifty-two-year-old Mexican immigrant. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the agent fired in self defense after Salgado Araujo attempted to evade arrest, ignored verbal commands, rammed an ICE vehicle with his van, and used his vehicle as a weapon in an attempt to run over the agent. This is at least the fourth case in which ICE has claimed that someone they shot was attempting to run them over. Photos provided by the family and civil rights groups show that the van had no visible damage. His family learned of his death when they saw footage of him lying on the ground on social media, not from law enforcement. The FBI has opened an investigation on a potential assault on a federal law enforcement officer. The civil rights group LULAC has offered a five thousand dollar reward for information leading to the indictment or exoneration of the agent. Salgado Araujo's son, Ronaldo Salgado, said that his father had lived in the U.S. for nearly thirty five years and was in the process of obtaining legal work authorization.

President Trump intervened in a FIFA World Cup match in order to influence a decision in the interest of the US national team. During the match between the US and Bosnia and Herzegovina last week, US striker Folarin Balogun was issued a red card for a tackle that injured another player, resulting in ejection from the game and an additional one-game suspension. President Trump then contacted FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who awarded Trump with the first ever FIFA Peace Prize last year. An exception was then made for the one-game suspension for a red card. The Union of European Football Associations, or UEFA, criticized FIFA's action as "unprecedented" and said it risked undermining the integrity of the sport. In a statement to the press, Trump said "So I saw the play, and I'm a person that loved sports and was a good athlete, and I understand sports really well. And that wasn't a foul." Later in the same statement, he said, "They talk about the red card like it's fine. Red card, I didn't know what the hell a red card was, but when I found out I said, 'You gotta be kidding.'"

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has officially called on the US government to impose an arms embargo on Israel, and urges its members to boycott Israeli products. This denomination of the Presbyterian Church currently has over one million members in about eighty three hundred congregations across the country. Previously, the Church's position on the conflict supported both Israel's right to exist and Palestinian self-determination. The General Assembly has now voted four hundred and fifty four to fifteen to officially declare that Israel's military campaign in Gaza constitutes a genocide. In the same General Assembly, the church voted to end its investments in the companies Palantir Technologies and GE Aerospace because it concluded their products and services support Israel's military and intelligence operations. Palantir Technologies also has close ties to Presiden Trump. In other news, Sister Leticia Ugboaja, a Roman Catholic nun from Nigeria, was arrested by ICE in Texas and has been released from custody. Her arrest drew anger from both political parties in Texas, leading to her release.

Twenty two Democrats joined most Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives to vote against a resolution that would limit U.S. military involvement in Lebanon. The measure, introduced by congressmember Rashida Tlaib, failed by a vote of one hundred eighty nine to two hundred thirty five, relates to the US involvement in the attempted invasion of Lebanon by Israel. The resolution was based on the War Powers Resolution of 1973, a law intended to ensure that Congress, not just the president, has the authority to send troops to war. Opponents argued that the resolution addressed a situation that did not exist because the US is currently not at war with Lebanon, even though the US is the largest funder of the Israeli military. The vote highlights a current divide within the Democratic Party. It is estimated that in 2026, more than thirty candidates associated with the Democratic Socialists of America have won in congressional, state legislative, and local races. The largest point of disagreement between the more progressive Democrats and the Democratic National Committee is the support for Israel.

A severe heat wave is affecting Europe and parts of the United States, with scientists directly linking it to human-caused climate change. Europe is suffering under what experts are calling a "heat dome" that has broken national records, with Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic all reaching temperatures of over one hundred and four degrees. The World Health Organization has reported over a thousands deaths since June 21st in France alone, most of those being people over the age of sixty five. Morgues in Paris are overwhelmed, forcing the use of temporary cold storage. The heat has caused power grids, nuclear plants, and railways to shut down. Hundreds of schools have closed, and major events have been canceled. Outdoor workers and the homeless face the greatest risk, while unsupervised swimming has led to a surge in drownings. World Health Organization Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, "Driven by climate, the phenomenon of the 'once-in-a-generation' heatwave is now occurring nearly annually. We were warned."

On Thursday, the US Supreme Court restricted the ability of migrants to seek asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border by upholding the Trump administration's "metering" policy. The ruling, decided by a six-to-three vote, revolves around the definition of the word "arrives" in the Immigration and Nationality Act. The law allows a person who is physically present in the United States or who arrives in the United States to apply for asylum. The Court's opinion, authored by Justice Samuel Alito, ruled that migrants stopped on the Mexican side of the border have not legally arrived in the United States, stating, "in ordinary speech, no one would say that a person 'arrives in' a place (…) before the person enters that place." This overturns a lower court's ruling that migrants had "arrived" when they reached a port of entry, regardless of whether they had physically stepped onto U.S. soil. This ruling effectively revives the "metering" policy, where U.S. immigration officials can limit the number of asylum seekers processed each day at border crossings by citing overcrowding or resource constraints.

In Texas, a federal judge has issued sentences ranging from thirty to one hundred years in prison for nine people involved in a protest outside the Prairieland ICE Detention Center last year. The action was planned as a noise demonstration, during which fireworks were lit and ICE vehicles were vandalized. When a police officer drew his weapon and was pointing it at a protester, the officer was shot and wounded by Benjamin Song, another one of the protesters. Under the new "domestic terrorist organization" designation created by the Trump Administration, all of the defendants were charged with conspiracy to commit terrorism, resulting in a 100-year sentence for Song. Daniel Sanchez Estrada was not at the action but was sentenced to thirty years for moving antifascist pamphlets out of the house of one of the activists who was arrested. Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche, who has helped to legally defend the January 6th insurrectionists who murdered police officers, said "Antifa terrorists who attack law enforcement and federal facilities will face swift and uncompromising justice."

Under the pressure of intensified US sanctions and blockades, Cuba has approved new economic reforms that move it further away from its socialist ideals and closer to US interests. On Friday, the Cuban National Assembly approved hundred and seventy six measures designed to open the economy to private and foreign interests in the most significant shift away from a state-controlled model since the 1959 revolution. Private businesses can now hire more than one hundred employees, and Individuals can now own multiple businesses. The reforms will allow private and foreign investment in real estate development and the fuel industry. For the first time since the revolution, private banks, as well as the institutional use of foreign currency, will authorized. The reforms, which are similar to those made in the past by the Chinese and Vietnamesew governments, are widely seen as a survival strategy in the face of the US embargo and blockade. In other news, Israel violated the agreement to end the war between the US and Iran, less than 24 hours after the agreement was signed. Iran has once again closed the Strait of Hermuz.

On Sunday, police in Senatobia, Mississippi shot and killed Kohen Wiley, a Black one-year-old boy, because his mother allegedly shoplifted diapers from Walmart. According to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, officers responded to a shoplifting report and encountered two adults and a child fleeing the store and entering a vehicle. Police claim the driver drove toward officers, nearly striking one, prompting an officer to discharge their weapon. The vehicle then fled to a hospital where the boy was pronounced dead. The family's lawyer stated that Vallesiya Wiley, Kohen's mother, lifted her son to show officers he was in the car, but that officers fired anyway. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, but not has not been fired or arrested. Protests calling for the officer to be arrested erupted Tuesday outside Senatobia City Hall and at the Walmart parking lot, and police deployed tear gas to disperse the protesters. Although police accuse Wiley of stealing the diapers and attempting to hit the officer with her car, she has not been charged with any crime.
