Booklovers: A podcast for readers episodes

  • Books by the Banks 2018
    For this episode, Andrea and I chat with two of the library’s staff members about Books by the Banks, the region’s biggest and best book festival.
    About Books by the Banks
    For over a decade, the region’s biggest and best book festival, Books by the Banks, has brought the best in literature to downtown Cincinnati. This year’s festival is no different and features over 150 authors, as well as literary themed activities for all ages.
    The 12th annual Books by the Banks Cincinnati Regional Book Festival will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018 at Duke Energy Convention Center, 525 Elm St., Cincinnati, OH 45202.
    Author lineup
    Many bestselling national authors have already joined the lineup. Authors include:

    * Nick Bruel, beloved children’s author and illustrator of the “Bad Kitty” series.
    * Wil Haygood, Miami University faculty member and author of Tigerland and The Butler, which inspired the award-winning Lee Daniels movie.
    * Thayne Maynard, director of the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden and author of Saving Fiona.
    * Alice McDermott, author of The Ninth Hour and winner of the American Book Award for her novel Charming Billy.
    * Sara Paretsky, mystery writer and creator of the “V.I. Warshawski” series.
    * Jason Reynolds, New York Times bestselling author of All American Boys, the “Track” series, Long Way Down, and Miles Morales–Spiderman. He has won the Coretta Scott King Award, the Newbery Honor, and Printz Honor Book for his work.

    In addition to the Author Pavilion, where visitors can buy books and get them signed, there are many more activities during the Festival. The popular Kids’ Corner will feature a “Full STEAM Ahead” theme and features activity stations for preschool and school-age children, storytimes and acts by top-notch children’s performers. This year’s Teen Scene hosts a “Galaxy Con” theme and includes V.I.P. author meet-and-greets, maker activities and more. The popular Writing & Getting Publishing series returns this year with panel discussions covering hot topics for writers and workshops to help hone the craft of writing.

    Early Literacy
    What is early literacy? Although it might sound like it, early literacy isn’t teaching your child how to read. It’s helping your child become aware of and comfortable with books and language. You are getting them ready to learn to read.
    It’s never too early to prepare children for success as readers.  You can teach important pre-reading skills now that will make it easier for your child to learn to read.
    Reasons to read to your child. They’ll have:

    * A larger vocabulary
    * Better language skills
    * Greater interest in books
    * Greater enjoyment of reading

    Our Parent’s Guide offers you tips about developing your child’s skills.
