  • SUICIDE EARTH (#11) Nathaniel Rich -- Losing Earth | w. Van Carter
Losing Earth: A Recent History by Nathaniel Rich (MCD, April 2019)By 1979, we knew nearly everything we understand today about climate change―including how to stop it. Over the next decade, a handful of scientists, politicians, and strategists, led by two unlikely heroes, risked their careers in a desperate, escalating campaign to convince the world to act before it was too late. Losing Earth is their story, and ours.It reveals the birth of climate denialism and the genesis of the fossil fuel industry's coordinated effort to thwart climate policy through misinformation propaganda and political influence. The book carries the story into the present day, wrestling with the long shadow of our past failures and asking crucial questions about how we make sense of our past, our future, and ourselves.*PEN/E.O. • SUICIDE EARTH (#10) Elin Kelsey -- Hope Matters | w. Van Carter
Hope Matters: Why Changing the Way We think is Critical to Solving the Environmental Crisis (Greystone Books, Oct 2020) by Elin Kelsey.Fears about climate change are fueling an epidemic of despair across the world: adults worry about their children’s future; thirty-somethings question whether they should have kids or not; and many young people honestly believe they have no future at all. In the face of extreme eco-anxiety, scholar and award-winning author Elin Kelsey argues that our hopelessness—while an understandable reaction—is hampering our ability to address the very real problems we face. Kelsey offers a powerful solution: hope itself.Hope Matters boldly breaks through the narrative of doom and gloom to show why evidence-based hope, not fear, is our most powerful tool for change. Kelsey shares real-life examples of positive climate news that reveal the power of our mindsets to shape reality, the resilience of nature, and the transformative possibilities of individual and collective action.  _________________________Van Carter is a retired broadcast journalist. • Milford House Mysteries: An Interview with JM West
On this episode of Milford House Mysteries, we feature co-host JM West and her new book of historical nonfiction, Madam Bessie Jones: Her Life and Times. Co-host Sherry Knowlton will interview West about her decision to take on a scandalous southcentral Pennsylvania figure and an unsolved murder for her first foray into historical non-fiction. We’ll also talk about West’s Carlisle Crime Cases series and more.In Madam Bessie Jones, Her Life and Times, Jones emerges from the shadows of Carlisle (PA) history, first turning tricks in her mother Cora Andrews’ “bawdy house” and then running her  brothel from the Roaring Twenties  through the chaotic sixties until her murder on October 1, 1972. For fifty years, she catered to the area’s elite white clientele—lawyers, judges, businessmen and senators. This historic book traces the struggles of Jones’s operating a successful--if illegal--business through actual anecdotes despite running afoul of the law, including her murder and the sensational trial.Milford House Mysteries Hosts - Sherry Knowlton is the author of the Alexa Williams suspense series including Dead of Autumn, Dead of Summer, Dead of Spring, Dead of Winter, and Dead on the Delta. Joan West is the author of the Carlisle Crime Cases series including Dying for Vengeance, Courting Doubt and Darkness, Darkness at First Light, Had a Dying Fall, and Things Strangled. • SUICIDE EARTH (#9) J.K. Ullrich -- Blue Karma | w. Van Carter
(A highly prescient fiction account that helps all of us see the bleak future we are creating.)Blue Karma (Mar 2019, Spaekona Press) by J.K. Ullrich. Came out digitally in 2015.  In the near dystopian future, water is the coin of the realm.  People steal it.  People die for it.  Empires depend on it.  Water.  It covers almost three quarters of the planet, comprises more than half the human body, and has become the most coveted resource on Earth.  And because of its sudden scarcity, humans around the world have been displaced.J.K. Ullrich investigates the future as a technology analyst by day and a science fiction writer by night. She published her award-winning debut novel Blue Karma in 2015, followed by the Syzygy novella series. “In Blue Karma I envisioned a near future where this plight was so common, people had developed a vocabulary shortcut for the issue. Thus I coined the term “engee”, a portmanteau of “environmental refugee”. I never imagined applying the term in a real-life context so soon after dreaming it up, but that’s exactly what’s happening.”_________________________Van Carter is a retired broadcast journalist. • SUICIDE EARTH (#8) Roman Krznaric -- The Good Ancestor | w. Van Carter
The Good Ancestor, A Radical Prescription for Long-Term Thinking (Nov 2020, The Experiment) is by leading public philosopher Roman Krznaric.  A timely perspective for this moment in history.Businesses eschew civic responsibility for immediate gains, politicians throw their support behind whatever will win the next election, and we all struggle to focus our attention beyond the next alert from our phones.  The result? An inexcusable chasm between the haves and have-nots--and mounting existential threats--have brought our species to the precipice of disaster.  Yet Krznaric sees reason to hope... if we can trade short-sightedness with long-term thinking.  In The Good Ancestor, Krznaric reveals six practical ways we can retrain our brains to think of the long view, including Deep Humility (recognizing our lives as a cosmic eyeblink) and Cathedral Thinking (starting projects that will take more than one lifetime to complete).  His aim is to inspire more "time rebels" like Greta Thunberg--to shift our allegiance from this generation to all of humanity--in short, to save our planet and our future._________________________Van Carter is a retired broadcast journalist. • SUICIDE EARTH(#7) Dahr Jamail -- The End of Ice | w. Van Carter
The End of Ice: Bearing Witness and Finding Meaning in the Path of Climate Destruction (The New Press, Jan 2019)After nearly a decade overseas as a war reporter, the acclaimed journalist Dahr Jamail returned to America to renew his passion for mountaineering, only to find that the slopes he had once climbed have been irrevocably changed by climate disruption. In response, Jamail embarks on a journey to the geographical front lines of this crisis―from Alaska to Australia's Great Barrier Reef, via the Amazon rainforest―in order to discover the consequences to nature and to humans of the loss of ice.In The End of Ice, we follow Jamail as he scales Denali, the highest peak in North America, dives in the warm crystal waters of the Pacific only to find ghostly coral reefs, and explores the tundra of St. Paul Island where he meets the last subsistence seal hunters of the Bering Sea and witnesses its melting glaciers. Accompanied by climate scientists and people whose families have fished, farmed, and lived in the areas he visits for centuries, Jamail begins to accept the fact that Earth, most likely, is in a hospice situation.___________________Van Carter is a retired broadcast journalist.
