  • The Implosion of Wendy Greuel
"We didn't perceive Jan Perry or Kevin James as serious candidates in any way, shape or form," , referring to the strength of the veteran African American councilwoman and Republican former radio host. "That was a mistake." John Shallman
James took the lead in warning voters of Greuel's connections to city unions, particularly the one representing many Department of Water and Power workers, who spent nearly $1.7 million on an independent campaign to get her elected
Jan Perry launched a series of blistering mailers attacking Greuel, including one that accused her of being a closet Republican. LAtimes
It’s hard to know minute to minute which Wendy Greuel is speaking or for that matter whether she even cares anymore whose words she is mouthing as long as she gets the support and money from those who matter.Ron Kaye

  • The Uncivil Wars
Harvard professors Carmen Reinhart and Kenneth Rogoff  are accusing Paul Krugman of “spectacularly uncivil” behaviour.
n normal times, an arithmetic mistake in an economics paper would be a complete nonevent as far as the wider world was concerned. But in April 2013, the discovery of such a mistake—actually, a coding error in a spreadsheet, coupled with several other flaws in the analysis—not only became the talk of the economics profession, but made headlines. Looking back, we might even conclude that it changed the course of policy.
Why? Because the paper in question, “Growth in a Time of Debt,” by the Harvard economists Carmen Reinhart and Kenneth Rogoff, had acquired touchstone status in the debate over economic policy. Ever since the paper was first circulated, austerians—advocates of fiscal austerity, of immediate sharp cuts in government spending—had cited its alleged findings to defend their position and attack their critics. We were met with declarations that Reinhart and Rogoff had shown that waiting would be disastrous, that economies fall off a cliff once government debt exceeds 90 percent of GDP.
“You have attacked us in very personal terms, virtually non-stop, in your New York Times column and blog posts,” the pair continued. “… Your characterization of our work and of our policy impact is selective and shallow. It is deeply misleading about where we stand on the issues. And we would respectfully submit, your logic and evidence on the policy substance is not nearly as compelling as you imply.”Reinhart and Rogoff

NOTE from JERRY: "On May 30th I hope to find out whether or not the initial indications of my being cancer-free are still true. A very detailed exam will be done by my doctors at St. John's Medical Center in Tulsa to determine this. If the readings are favorable then I expect to have my colon back as good as new. Within a week or so after the exam everything should be back to pre-operative condition, meaning I will have a new lease on life. Details of results will be displayed on this website.
"Thank you for all your good wishes and prayers and for listening all these years."

“This is a strong community with a strong character,” Obama said from the shadow of the school’s ruined classrooms, a 20-foot-high pile of debris behind him. “There is no doubt they will bounce back, but they need help.”
President Obama on a visit to Moore,Oklahoma.
We talk with broadcaster and veteran journalist Jerry Pippin from his home in the eastern part of the very Red state of Oklahoma on the .politics of disaster aid,
Senator Tom Coburn said on Face the Nation won't support additional disaster relief funding without spending cuts elsewhere -- even after tornadoes ripped apart his own state last week.
"We've created kind of a predicate, that you don't have to be responsible for what goes on in your state,"

  • President Obama at Morehouse College
President Obama delivered the commencement address to the 2013 graduates of Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA.
“It is one of the great honors of my life to be able to address this gathering here today,” President Obama told the graduates. He spoke about Morehouse’s history, and “ the unique sense of purpose that this place has always infused -- the conviction that this is a training ground not only for individual success, but for leadership that can change the world.”
“Your generation is uniquely poised for success unlike any generation of African Americans that came before it,” President Obama said.
“And finally, as you do these things, do them not just for yourself, but don't even do them just for the African American community. I want you to set your sights higher,” President Obama said. “It’s not just the African American community that needs you. The country needs you. The world needs you.”

  • Numbers Matter
According to IRS in 2012, it conducted just shy of 1.5 million audits out of 144 million individual income tax returns. The probability of being audited is highest for high-income taxpayers — about 12 percent of individuals who made more than $1 million and 33% people who claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit were audited in 2012.
But the principle is important: a handful of anecdotal data points are not worth very much in a country of more than 300 million people. Ms. Noonan, and many other commentators, made a similar mistake last year in their analysis of the presidential election, when they cited evidence like the number of Mitt Romney yard signs in certain neighborhoods as an indication that he was likely to win, while dismissing polls that collectively surveyed hundreds of thousands of voters in swing states and largely showed Mr. Obama ahead.Nate Silver
