  • Paul Ryan Right-wing Social Engineer
The Republican Party is now officially a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Koch brothers' political enterprise. How else to explain Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's pick of Rep. Paul Ryan, Wis., as his running mate. Yes, that Paul Ryan -- chairman of the House Budget Committee and author of the infamous Ryan roadmap budget plan, which promises to turn Medicare into a privatized voucher system, and yank health care from millions of children whose parents happen to be poor. And that's just the beginning. In addition to a raft of cuts, the Ryan plan would end the Earned Income Tax Credit, which millions of parents count on.
It's a plan that even former House Speaker Newt Gingrich deemed too "radical." Asked by NBC's David Gregory to respond to Ryan's proposal, Gingrich famously said (video): "I don't think right-wing social engineering is any more desirable than left-wing social engineering. I don't think imposing radical change from the right or the left is a very good way for a free society to operate."

  • The Iowa State Fair 2012
President Barack Obama kicked off his three-day Iowa tour with a clarion call to view this election as a stark choice about America’s future — and ended the day in the Bud Tent at the Iowa State Fair.
Before he got to his Bud Light and pork chop, there was plenty of red meat politics, and lots of idyllic Iowa scenes. He stopped at a farm to talk about the drought and rode by scores of wind towers, hundreds of people waving American flags, and thousands of acres of drought-shriveled corn..Des Moines Register

  • Welfare the New Racist Code Word
In a speech in Illinois Tuesday, Romney praised Clinton and Republicans for saying “they did not want a culture of dependency to grow in our country, but instead wanted people to have the blessings of work.” By contrast, he said, “President Obama, in just the last few days, has tried to reverse that accomplishment, by taking the work requirement out of welfare. That is wrong, if I’m president I’ll put work back in welfare"
    I smell desperation.
It’s one thing when campaign supporters and even surrogates issue scurrilous attacks on their candidate’s opponent— both sides have done some of this — but it’s another thing altogether when those
accusations become a central line of attack stemming from the candidate himself.
Earlier this week, Mitt Romney claimed that President Obama had moved to eliminate the work requirement for welfare recipients.CHARLES M. BLOW

  • Missouri Republican Primary 2012
Rep. Todd Akin, who touted himself as the most conservative congressman in Missouri, won a hard-fought Republican primary Tuesday for the right to challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill in a contest that could be pivotal for party control of the chamber.
Akin topped suburban St. Louis businessman John Brunner and former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman in a primary in which all three leading candidates tried to appeal to conservative voters and tea party activists. McCaskill, who bills herself as a political moderate, was unopposed in the Democratic primary.

  • A Matter of Racism
The Obama administration has asked for a fresh review of Clarence Aaron, a first-time offender sentenced in 1993 to three life terms in prison for his role in a drug conspiracy, inmate's commutation request and directed the Justice Department to conduct its first ever in-depth analysis of recommendations for presidential pardons, according to several officials and individuals involved.
The Office of Pardon Attorney has been at the center of growing controversy since December, when stories published by ProPublica and The Washington Post revealed a racial disparity in pardons. White applicants were four times more likely to receive presidential mercy than minorities. African Americans had the least chance of success.
In 2008, the pardon attorney recommended that President George W. Bush deny Aaron's request for a commutation even though his application had the support of the prosecutor's office that tried him and the judge who sentenced him. The pardon attorney, Ronald L. Rodgers, did not fully
disclose that information to the White House.
ince 2008, more than 7,000 applications for commutations have been denied, more than 22 times the total rejected in President Ronald Reagan's two terms. Obama has commuted the sentence of just one person.
Families of clemency applicants also began circulating a petition calling on Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr. to replace Rodgers. The Attorney General has full confidence in Rodgers and the work of the pardon office.
