THE PRESIDENT'S STATEMENT ON THE PAYROLL TAX AGREEMENT:
    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    December 22, 2011
    Statement by the President
For the past several weeks, I’ve stated consistently that it was critical that Congress not go home without preventing a tax increase on 160 million working Americans.  Today, I congratulate members of Congress for ending the partisan stalemate by reaching an agreement that meets that test.
Because of this agreement, every working American will keep his or her tax cut – about $1,000 for the average family.  That’s about $40 in every paycheck.  Vital unemployment insurance will continue for millions of Americans who are looking for work.  And when Congress returns, I urge them to keep working to reach an agreement that will extend this tax cut and unemployment insurance for all of 2012 without drama or delay.
This is good news, just in time for the holidays.  This is the right thing to do to strengthen our families, grow our economy, and create new jobs.  This is real money that will make a real difference in people’s lives.  And I want to thank every American who raised your voice to remind folks in this town what this debate was all about.  It was about you.  And today, your voices made all the difference.

  • Free Ivan Eberhart in 2011
Ivan Eberhart, an African American father and businessman, was wrongfully accused and convicted of a drug conspiracy after a convicted felon implicated him, then recanted and was not allowed to come to trial.  Prosecutors used the felon’s original statements in hearsay testimony to convict Eberhart, and after numerous appeals, he was sentenced by Judge James Zagel and is now serving a 10-year sentence at Oxford Federal Prison Camp in Wisconsin.   In a letter to President Obama, in support of Mr. Eberhart’s clemency petition, Judge Zagel wrote: “After the jury returned the guilty verdict, I ordered a new trial because I found that the prosecution had offered unreliable evidence to bolster a thin case.” That order was appealed and overturned by the appellate court.  Zagel went on to commend  Eberhart as an “honest and decent businessman as well as a good family man and an upstanding member of his community.”  He recommended a specific  release plan, saying  “. . . I would urge commutation of his sentence from ten year to five years. . .” and concluded by stating, “His time in prison was not required for his rehabilitation, he managed that on his own before he went away.”
Christmas or holiday cards, well wishes or letters can be sent to Eberhart as follows:

  • Racist Voter Suppression Laws in 2012
The NAACP marched with other groups at  the United Nations and across the nation against Voter ID Laws9the new Jim Crow). The GOP is now on the defensive about their attack on voting rights.
In the rural South, many people of colour have no birth certificate because they were born to a midwife. The barriers
to getting a state issued ID without a birth certificate are
very costly. Others are dependent on the rides to the polls
provided by church-organized on early voting Sunday voting drives, which have been shut down in states like Florida.
