Standard & Poor's removed for  the triple-A rating the U.S. has held for 70 years, saying the budget deal recently brokered in Washington didn't do enough to address the gloomy long-term picture for America's finances. It downgraded U.S. debt to AA+, a score that ranks below Liechtenstein and more than a dozen other countries, and on par with Belgium and New Zealand.

U.S. stocks were down 4.8 percent,, and there were similar drops in foreign stocks, oil prices and the debt of financially troubled nations such as Spain and Italy.

The GOP is holding hostage  the FFA  reauthorization bill  causing the furlough of  4,000 FAA employees and the halting of hundreds of airport construction projects.

President Obama  signed the the compromise debt plan worked out between Congressional leaders and the White House.  The Senate approved the plan  74-26.
